Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

Engine 2 Foods

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

Yet another "healthy" product I cannot eat because it has flax seed in it! Flax seed causes anaphylaxis for me! I have ended up in the ER 4 times this year while trying to eat healthier. Finally figured out it was flax seed and it seems to bein everything now. :(

Was just told I should be on a low sodium diet. I googled exactly what that entailed and found out that most breakfast cereals are low sodium. So, it looks like I will be switching what I eat in the AM.

After being approached by a fellow shopper at Whole Foods (Ina and Oracle, Tucson, AZ) i became a convert to a Forks Over Knives Lifestye. I had terrific support from the staff at Whole Foods, Levi and Brett in particular. After 2 months with dietary changes and exercise I had a 60 point cholestrol decrease! Additionally, I introduced my medical office, Carlson Ear Nose and Throat to the DVD and prepared a luncheon for 35. I am the practice administrator and allergy RN and have suggested the DVD and books, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Esselstyn,Jr.,M.D. to our patients for improved health. I was delighted that some folks were familiar with the concept. This transition was made much more easily with the help from my partners at Whole Foods ! Thank you.

I have been eating Rip's Big Bowl for the past two months since I found it at our local Whole Foods in Tulsa, Ok. I decided to follow the "Forks Over Knives" program after viewing the video by the same name. It really opened my eyes to all the eating mistakes I have made in my life. I immediately ordered the book and started the transition. I was so tired of my physician trying to push statins down my throat every time she check my cholesterol. Many of the drugs made me feel awful so I decided to go with the "new eating plan" suggested by Rip's father. So far I have dropped ten pounds and I feel so much better not taking in main stream foods. I am enjoying beans for the first time in my life. Wonderful soups, chili, and potatoes without all the fat from dairy. I plan to continue to improve my healthy eating habits in to the new year of 2013. Thank you Whole Foods and the "Forks Over Knives" team for showing me a better way to eat and live.
