Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

Engine 2 Foods

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

I worked in dietary for 16 years as a diet clerk, my mom is a registered nurse so I am always concerned about the way people eat and trying to maintain a healthy diet my self. I'm on disability now and can no longer work, being on a very low income my diet has been very hard to maintain because the only two stores in my small town are 1 a very expensive grocery store and 2 a box store that has terrible produce, I don't have a car right now and rely on rides so I don't have transportation to the next town where there are better stores including a Whole Foods. I am an avid label reader and I still advise my friends and family on healthy way's to eat and what to watch out for. I would love to try Engine 2 cereal it sounds delicious, I would also like to try their other products.

Last August I received news that my cholesteral was over 250. I was going to eat fish and fish oil and more fruits and veggies. Then I heard about the Engine 2 diet and went on to read the China Study and Forks over Knives. It all came together for me and I left off eating meat, oils, lots of sweets and dairy. I feel much better and am going to get tested again in Feb. I am confident that this diet and lifestyle will really help me stay healthier and less prone to have heart disease and strokes. Thanks alot for all the great information and inspiration. Pauline McConnell

I have been a Chicago firefighter and paramedic for 12 years now and have found the firehouse to be a horrible place for a healty diet.... because of that I became a vegetarian about 3 years ago. I increasingly find it difficult to manage enough protien in my diet to keep up muscle building for the strength needed or my job. i have never heard of Engine 2 diet before but am very interested because it seems to perfectly fint my needs.... i cant wait to buy the book and try some of the engine 2 products.... thanks for the info!!

A year ago my daughter became vegetarian. It inspired me to follow suite. Although not a strict follower, I have began eating primarily plant-based. I have lost about 25 lbs and feel fantastic! I plan to continue in 2013 increasing the amount of plant-based food in my diet.

I'll do anything Rip says... ha ha, just kidding. But not really. For 2013 I want to practice a much higher level of mindfulness when I am eating. Well, also before and after I'm eating; I want to cut back on boredom munching and happy crunching so that I save more money, and more calories, too!

Even when commuting to work I was able to have salads for lunch the last few years, but breakfasts were a problem. Now that I am mostly working from home I am eating better breakfasts, either oatmeal or cereal with fruit. I'm always interested in trying new things. I haven't seen these in my local Whole Foods, I'll have to look next time I'm there.

This sounds like a good way to get cooking. I don't, and really want to. As I recall, the meals shown in FOK were visually pleasing. I imagine they taste as good as they look. Hope I win!
