Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

What changes are you making for the New Year?

I allowed myself to indulge in too many sweets over the holidays. Come January 1, my goal is to take off the 6 lbs. I put on. I am already vegetarian and work out at a gym, so basically I just have to cut out the "too many sweet treats" of the holidays. The ingredients in Rip's Big Bowl cereal sound very good and healthy. I'll have to try it.

I have been on your plant food through Whole Foods in Jacksonville Florida since October, I am in CA visiting my Firefighter son in LA. He works the Culver City Station 3. He is amazed on how I look and the weight I have lost. All your products are amazing. I am making a commitment for 2013 to eat only plant food as well as my son. Thank you again for giving me back my health and a long healthy life to share with him.

I've been following your family's plant strong diet since I saw Dr. E. and Ann at the Vegetarian Summerfest in Johnstown, PA. What part of zero don't we understand... NO OIL, that blunt statement really stuck with me, kind of like oil sticks to arteries. I've read both, Dr. E.'s book and The Engine 2 Diet. I was so impressed that I gave a friend of mine a copy of each book while she was in the hospital for a heart related emergency. I asked her to read the books, they would make her feel a lot better than a bunch of flowers. I'm looking forward to trying the cereal, and sharing the info with my vegetarian friend who has yet to go vegan. I'm still working on her, she's all for convenience foods. I'll pass the info on to our local vegetarian group and let them know Rip's new products are available. Thanks so much for healthier plant strong convenience foods.

My goal is to continue eating a whole food, oil-free diet and to discover new recipes while doing so. My husband and I were fortunate enough to attend one of the Farms to Forks gatherings last summer, organized by Rip and his team. We had already converted to a whole food diet, but it was inspirational, educational and fun. We have found our new eating habits to be tasty, nourishing and very enjoyable.

I will be changing my diet as well as my son's to include mostly leafy greens, vegetables and whole grains. I already have us both on green drinks but have needed to go beyond that. I'm committing to taking it further.

I know I need to set a better example for my 12 year old son. His cholesterol was tested this past week and I am afraid that my bad nutrition habits have affected his health.

I have been trying to lose weight and be healthy my entire adult life. I recently found Engine 2 diet on Facebook. I started researching, bought and read Rip's book. Starting tomorrow, I am entering into the 28 day challenge on his website. After 28 days, I am hoping for a plant strong diet to help with my running goals, my weight goals, and my healthy lifestyle goals! I am hoping to get to your store today to find some of the products on his shopping list I can't find!
