Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

What changes are you making for the New Year?

I have steadily been reducing the amount of meat we eat, my husband is a big guy - and one of the things he complains about is being hungry - I will continue to "reprogram" him in 2013, so that we can both be healthier throughout our lives. Your Engine 2 Rip’s Big Bowl Original cereal looks great - like it would provide us both the kind of morning fuel we need! Would love to try it out! Thanks

I'm trying to eat healthier cereal and have been trying Engine 2 Plant-strong Rip's Big Bowl. I like the one with the bananas the best. It's filling and not sweet, has a combination of grains and fiber that are satisfying.

I've done the 28-day challenge before and I'm jumping right back in on January 1st. I never felt better than when I was plant-strong, this time it needs to be more permanent.

My plan for the New Year is to participate in a 30day Whole Health Detox class at my ND's office in January. I plan to begin eating healthfully again. It's time to dig out my books (Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease & The China Study) & add the Engine 2 Diet book to my collection. I am very excited to hear that WF carries Engine 2 products & I can't wait to try them!

I want to start treating myself better, stop binge eating before bed, focus more on the positive and wonderful things I have in my life, live in the moment and not stress about work and my future as much.

Generally speaking, I'm a healthy eater. I'm a vegetarian, prefer organic foods, and am not a big sugar eater. Then I have the binging moments. In the new year, I'd like to get to the point where those pretty much disappear. There's no reason to never have a splurge but my splurges tend to last for at least an entire day and that is ridiculous. products like Engine 2 should help me tone that stuff down.

Have been vegan for 18 months now. Rip and his father's books set me on the path. I had a major cholesterol problem and could not take meds. Lost 45 pounds and dropped my cholesterol by 100 points. Thanks Rip and Caldwell. Life changing and well worth it. BTW I am 70 and going strong.
