Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

Engine 2 Foods

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

Engine 2 Foods

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

What changes are you making for the New Year?

I watched Forks Over Knives after a friend at work recommended it to me. I have since read the book, read the Engine 2 Diet and have started reading the China Study. My husband and I have decided to adopt a Plant Strong lifestyle and we would love to win the case of cereal! Thank you for carrying the Engine 2 brand! Jory

I'm looking to find more vegetables I like. The big successes of 2012 were asparagus and winter squash. Beet greens good, beets bad.

I am making more time to take care of myself---taking more time to prepare healthy meals instead of getting take-out, making sure I am getting enough sleep, going for more walks, and allowing myself to relax once in a while! 2 full-time jobs takes a lot out of me, but I am realizing that I am worth taking care of :)

I'm going to eat Rip's Big Bowl Cereal rather than create my own version after eating Rip's plant-strong menu for 16 months. Switching to a vegan, plant-strong diet has made a huge difference in my health. As he says in his book, I lost weight and dropped my cholesterol levels. The enormous, pleasant surprise for me was to have my inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis drop by over 50%. Plus, I have a spine and nerve problem restricting my walking until I changed my diet. I'm hooked for life!

My goal is to cut back on sweets, which have been a daily indulgence since the third trimester of my pregnancy. Now my daugher is a year old, and the sweet tooth hasn`t stopped. She is more and more aware of what I`m eating, and I`d rather kick the habit altogether than wait until she`s sleeping to indulge!

My husband and I plan on watching the movie "Forks Over Knives" soon in the new year. I've been trying my best to get my husband to eat healthier foods. This Engine 2 cereal sounds like a tasty and healthy way to start the day. Whenever I try something new and healthy, I always share my find with friends and relatives. It is amazing how so many people still don't realize what is in the food they are eating. I hope I win this giveaway, so I can share my new find!

After years of slimming diet resolves, size reductions and disappointments, 2013 is a year of healthy choices. My new morning rituals are a small yet potent five minute wake-up plan of quiet meditation on the floor next to the bed. My goal is to exercise a minimum of three times a week not the intense daily exercise program promised to failure years past. Three times a week a bike ride or a three mile walk in my neighborhood, at the local park or beach. These attainable goals along with more grains, fruits and vegetables choices will instill a healthy lifestyle and importantly a choice I can attain and maintain.

I joined the 28 Day Challenge in June 2012 and enjoyed the challenge of following a vegan diet, especially since I love a good steak. I lost some additional weight, found some new founds and recipes to try and discovered opportunities to explore other eating habits. I didn't always have all of the ingredients for Rip's Big Bowl so I would improvise and now I even take a little container (about 1/2 cup total) of oatmeal, flax and/or chia, nuts, cranberries, bee pollen and anything else I can fit in. I eat it dry during my breaks or if I need a pick me up. I plan on giving the challenge another try as the New Year rolls in. Happy 2013!
