Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

Engine 2 Foods

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

Engine 2 Foods

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

What changes are you making for the New Year?

My entire family (including my 89 yr old grandmother) have started the E2 diet. We have all watched the video several times, my mom bought the cookbook and we are off to a great start. The first day my grandma was going to back out because she said "I don't want to eat raw kale all the time". We laughed and said give us one meal and then see how you like it. After our first meal she said "let's do this" lol. Thanks for guidance/help in a healthy 2013.

Eating out less. It's expensive and bad for you! Will try to cook more at home and enjoy the leftovers.

I am a regular customer at Wholefoods and shop there for organic fruits and vegetables. The past year I have made significant changes to my diet by eating a mostly plant-based diet. I woulld like to know more about the Engine 2 products and would enjoy winning a case of the cereal because breakfast is the hardest meal for me to incorporate this lifestyle.

I bought the Engine 2 book, forks over knives and watched all the videos about food. I am trying to get my family switched over to a plant-based diet. Thank you so much for opening our eyes to what has been done to our food system. I am going to be 65 this year, and I took up running. So far I have lost 30 lbs, and I feel like I am 40. I know if I can change my diet and eat healthy, I will be even better than I am now. Thanks again. Patti

I'm in the catering and hospitality industry and food is always in front of me! I love different flavor combinations and until now have not found a diet that offered that. I started the Engine 2 diet today, and started following the week one plan. The meals today were delicious and the wraps I prepped for tomorrow look yummy too. Thank you!

A friend posted on Facebook she had seen Forks Over Knives and was planning to try going vegan. I then watched the video myself, and one thing led to another. I found Rip's companion video about Engine 2 and watched it. I gave up dairy years ago in favor of soy milk as well as beef and pork. I have been semi-vegitarian for over 20 years, eating seafood and occasionally poultry, but now after also watching Food, Inc. and Vegucated, I know I have to finally go all the way to vegan!

I have been using many more whole grains and also fruits dried in my dehydrator. I just purchased 5 lbs of hulled spelt. I'm using it for breakfast cereals, as cracked spelt, and topping it with dried apples. I also like to make my own energy bars with quinoa, amaranth, spelt, rice flour, buckwheat flour, and many more, but I want to do more of it. They have wonderful dates at Whole Foods, and I'm now making more bars that don't need any cooking with the dates, cashew butter, chia seeds, etc. Good for snacking and for breakfast!!1

Before I go to any restaurant, I will research the menu and make a meal request based on ingredients from that menu and I will be assertive, (but friendly), with the staff to make it plant-strong!

My doc just told me yesterday to start healthier eating habits (ie- why I'm perusing the Whole Foods website as America's healthiest grocery store). Any thing that would help start a new change would be very welcome and appreciated. Hopefully 6 months from now will be a new me! :)

While I'm not a vegetarian, I'm committing to one day a week to eating all plant based meals. Once I've acheived that, then I'll try it on more days of the week. Gotta start somewhere!

I bought the engine 2 book after watching the forks over knives documentary. I was shocked at how little I really knew about what I ate and what I was putting into my body. Currently, I am trying the 28 day diet change (day 11!) and am amazed how great I feel!
