A Grape (Cookbook)

GrapesUPDATE: Thank you to everyone who entered! Congratulations to our winners Shea Fox, William Radkovich, Jennifer Essad, Koren Feinstein, and Carol Martell!

My son has a picture book where a group of animal friends find a treasure map. They run into some trouble – their canoe tips over, they cross a rickety rope bridge, they go through a spooky cave – before they finally get to the spot where the treasure should be. Instead they find a big fruit tree.  That’s when they realize the fruit is the treasure!

That’s how I feel when I walk into the produce section and I see those glistening bunches of red, green and dark, dark purple grapes piled high, like gems overflowing from a treasure chest. It’s when I eat them that I realize what a sweet treasure they really are.

Organic grapes are at their juicy, irresistible peak in Autumn. During this time of year, the organic grapes in our stores hail from California’s Central Valley. Grown without the use of toxic persistent pesticides by farmers who are committed to sustainable agriculture practices, grapes thrive in this region’s deep, fertile soils and plentiful sunshine. Here’s a blog post from last spring that goes into detail about what you get when you buy organic.

Sonoma Chicken SaladAnd who doesn’t love grapes? If you can keep yourself from gobbling them up right away, they can be used in all kinds of recipes. Our Sonoma Chicken Salad is one of our most requested store recipes. We’ve shared a number of glorious grape recipes in this recent blog post, but we want to share even more!

That’s why we’re giving away a copy of Susan Volland’s cookbook Green Black Red: Recipes for cooking and enjoying California grapes to five lucky readers, courtesy of the California Table Grape Commission.

Green Black Red cookbookFrom innovative drinks like Grape Bubble Milk Tea and Grape and Green Tea Smoothies to entertaining dishes like Mediterranean Grilled Chicken and Grape Skewers to kid-friendly fare like the Fresh Trail Mix made of grapes, Cheddar and nuts, Susan covers it all. I can’t decide which I’ll make first, the Creamy Penne with Blue Cheese and Grapes, or the Edamame and Green Grape Salad.

If any of this sounds “grape!” to you, share what you love about organic grapes in the comments below by October 3rd. We’ll pick five winners at random to receive a copy of Green Black Red.

The fine print: No purchase necessary. Promotion ends Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible. Void where prohibited.

As someone who doesn't care for celery, I've been using grapes to jazz up my chicken salad for years! I love the sweetness and they go great with the onion and spices I use. I'm a big fan of savory/sweet dishes and would love to try the recipes in this book.

What do I love about organic grapes? Obviously, the spray-free health benefits. But mostly, I love the feel of a grape in my mouth, rolling the firm fruit around and around, postponing the moment when I bit into it and the juicy center bursts with spectacular flavor. Some fruit just tastes good. You bit into it, chew and swallow. A grape is a sensuous experience, to be savored.

Love grapes. Love them to snack on, as a healthy dessert and also to cook with. A favorite recipe of mine is braised chicken with gewurztraminer and grapes, another sausage with grapes and balsamic onions.

I love grapes both as a food and the great wines they produce. I have to drive 100 miles round trip to buy any organic grapes but it worth the trip. I also stock up on my other organic purchases also. Here is a shout out to Ward's Market in Gainesville Florida. I will be making a trip over when the Autumn grapes arrive. I would really appreciate a copy of this book and put it to use as soon as I have it. Thanks for writing it. Whoever wins the copies, Enjoy!!!

Ahhh grapes...the purple kind. Grape juice was my favorite juice as a child, and it's still my fav! Grape jelly was/is my fav jelly flavor. Purple is my favorite color. Okay, I like the green grapes too. But purple grapes do a body good!

My favorite food in the world is Lebanese hot stuffed meat grape leaves! But I love eating the fruit too, sometimes I'll freeze grapes, an awesome cold snack in the summer time - and it brings back childhood memories :)

I love grapes because they are so easily portable, and last pretty long in the refrigerator if I don't get them eaten right away.

Walking past a fence draped heavily with ripe grapes fill the nasal passages with a rich, fruity sweetness so compelling that the errand I was on is forgotten. I burrow through the leaves to uncover the heavy dark fruit and begin eating without hesitation. My mouth fills with layers of flavor. I hold out my shirt to make a basket to fill with as many bunches as I can justify. There is no other treat more evocative of the bounty, richness and flavor of autumn. And yes, that shirt was stained, but oh, so worth it!

Organic Grapes! Yum, yum!! I love grapes to juice them; they make great grape juice! I also like to put them in with smoothies and I love a good chicken salad with cut up grapes. I wish all the people that enter this contest the best luck to winning this book!

I make a spread that everyone looks at funny, but ends up loving! I mix cream cheese, curry powder, & mango chutney together, then pace it on a plate in an oval shape. I cut grapes in half and place them on top of the cream cheese mixture, rounded side up, so that it looks like a cluster of grapes. I put sliced almods around the edges of the cream cheese, sort of like a crust. I serve it with crackers or a sliced baguette. YUM!
