A Grape (Cookbook)

GrapesUPDATE: Thank you to everyone who entered! Congratulations to our winners Shea Fox, William Radkovich, Jennifer Essad, Koren Feinstein, and Carol Martell!

My son has a picture book where a group of animal friends find a treasure map. They run into some trouble – their canoe tips over, they cross a rickety rope bridge, they go through a spooky cave – before they finally get to the spot where the treasure should be. Instead they find a big fruit tree.  That’s when they realize the fruit is the treasure!

That’s how I feel when I walk into the produce section and I see those glistening bunches of red, green and dark, dark purple grapes piled high, like gems overflowing from a treasure chest. It’s when I eat them that I realize what a sweet treasure they really are.

Organic grapes are at their juicy, irresistible peak in Autumn. During this time of year, the organic grapes in our stores hail from California’s Central Valley. Grown without the use of toxic persistent pesticides by farmers who are committed to sustainable agriculture practices, grapes thrive in this region’s deep, fertile soils and plentiful sunshine. Here’s a blog post from last spring that goes into detail about what you get when you buy organic.

Sonoma Chicken SaladAnd who doesn’t love grapes? If you can keep yourself from gobbling them up right away, they can be used in all kinds of recipes. Our Sonoma Chicken Salad is one of our most requested store recipes. We’ve shared a number of glorious grape recipes in this recent blog post, but we want to share even more!

That’s why we’re giving away a copy of Susan Volland’s cookbook Green Black Red: Recipes for cooking and enjoying California grapes to five lucky readers, courtesy of the California Table Grape Commission.

Green Black Red cookbookFrom innovative drinks like Grape Bubble Milk Tea and Grape and Green Tea Smoothies to entertaining dishes like Mediterranean Grilled Chicken and Grape Skewers to kid-friendly fare like the Fresh Trail Mix made of grapes, Cheddar and nuts, Susan covers it all. I can’t decide which I’ll make first, the Creamy Penne with Blue Cheese and Grapes, or the Edamame and Green Grape Salad.

If any of this sounds “grape!” to you, share what you love about organic grapes in the comments below by October 3rd. We’ll pick five winners at random to receive a copy of Green Black Red.

The fine print: No purchase necessary. Promotion ends Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible. Void where prohibited.

I make a juice with red grapes and kale (recipe courtesy Rawfully Organic) that all 3 of my kids LOVE! They beg for it every time we juice. So what I love most about the yummy organic grapes is that they help me get a ton of super green juice into my kids!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE grapes! They are my hands down favorite fruit... and most people see them as the red-headed stepchild of the fruit family, but I don't know why! They are so refreshing and incredibly convenient. Dessert is my favorite meal (hehe) and I would love to get this cook book because I've said for years no one makes any dessert with grapes, why?! Phew, as soon as my Whole Foods opens up (in Carrolwood, Tampa, Florida... when??!?!) I'm going to run to get some... hopefully to use my new cookbook?? Thanks Whole Foods for helping us to become a better, wholistic nation.

I love, love, love grapes. They have hands down been my favorite fruit my entire life. I always wondered why people don't like grapes more... they see them as the red headed stepchild of the produce section. Grapes are delicious, refreshing and so convenient. I'm a sucker for dessert and I've always wondered why I can't go out and get a grape dessert! Hope to win this cookbook so I can make some tasty grape treats myself. When my Whole Foods finally opens (Carrollwood, FL when?!?!), I'm going to run out and get to baking! Thanks Whole Foods for aiding in making our nation healthier and stronger.

I absolutely love the crispness of a good grape and the refreshing flavour when you bite into one! My girlfriend and I have always said our favorite date is bread, grapes, and cheese next to the river up here in New England. Big fan of whole foods, and doing a research project on you guys right now for one of my classes at the Coast Guard Academy. Would love to win this! -2nd Class Cadet David N. Parker

My mom used to make a wild rice salad that I HATED as a kid. But there was on reason I would eat it, because it had grapes in it. I would apportion my plate so that each bite contained the crispness and refreshing spurt of grape juice when I bit into it. Absolutely loved it. Now my girlfriend and I enjoy a basket of bread, grapes, and cheese whenever we're next to the river where I go to school in CT. Thanks for being awesome, 2/c David N. Parker

I LOOOOVVVEEEEEEEE GRAPES!!! I always have, when i was little i used to" taste test" grapes whenever i saw them in their open containers at the grocery store, i didn't know it was bad back then. I think i got my love of grapes from my grandfather. He always has grapes in the refrigerator or on the counter and i am constantly making trips back and forth up the stairs for this delicious fruit. The very best thing? he never brings in the same type of grape!!! so far my favorites are the green ones. Oh! and last but not least, having grapes FROZEN!! they are AWESOME!

Grapes are the visual i get when I envision my perfect fruit. Clean, crisp, juicy, slightly tart, organic, healthy and delicious. I grew up in California and due to my love of fruit, and my mothers love of healthy and organic things, grapes were always around me. The clear green crisp fruit reminds me of all the perfect things that come from my childhood in California. Not to mention they are delicious with practically anything.
