GrapesUPDATE: Thank you to everyone who entered! Congratulations to our winners Shea Fox, William Radkovich, Jennifer Essad, Koren Feinstein, and Carol Martell!

My son has a picture book where a group of animal friends find a treasure map. They run into some trouble – their canoe tips over, they cross a rickety rope bridge, they go through a spooky cave – before they finally get to the spot where the treasure should be. Instead they find a big fruit tree.  That’s when they realize the fruit is the treasure!

That’s how I feel when I walk into the produce section and I see those glistening bunches of red, green and dark, dark purple grapes piled high, like gems overflowing from a treasure chest. It’s when I eat them that I realize what a sweet treasure they really are.

Organic grapes are at their juicy, irresistible peak in Autumn. During this time of year, the organic grapes in our stores hail from California’s Central Valley. Grown without the use of toxic persistent pesticides by farmers who are committed to sustainable agriculture practices, grapes thrive in this region’s deep, fertile soils and plentiful sunshine. Here’s a blog post from last spring that goes into detail about what you get when you buy organic.

Sonoma Chicken SaladAnd who doesn’t love grapes? If you can keep yourself from gobbling them up right away, they can be used in all kinds of recipes. Our Sonoma Chicken Salad is one of our most requested store recipes. We’ve shared a number of glorious grape recipes in this recent blog post, but we want to share even more!

That’s why we’re giving away a copy of Susan Volland’s cookbook Green Black Red: Recipes for cooking and enjoying California grapes to five lucky readers, courtesy of the California Table Grape Commission.

Green Black Red cookbookFrom innovative drinks like Grape Bubble Milk Tea and Grape and Green Tea Smoothies to entertaining dishes like Mediterranean Grilled Chicken and Grape Skewers to kid-friendly fare like the Fresh Trail Mix made of grapes, Cheddar and nuts, Susan covers it all. I can’t decide which I’ll make first, the Creamy Penne with Blue Cheese and Grapes, or the Edamame and Green Grape Salad.

If any of this sounds “grape!” to you, share what you love about organic grapes in the comments below by October 3rd. We’ll pick five winners at random to receive a copy of Green Black Red.

The fine print: No purchase necessary. Promotion ends Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible. Void where prohibited.

I've been eating and loving grapes for more than sixty years. I still love to "pick and eat" until I can hardly eat anymore. I can't imagine cooking with grapes. We eat pounds every week and I'm losing weight!

I love grapes and I love organic grapes even more. I mean, who wants to pop pesticides into their mouth! Grapes are my favorite snack food. When I get "the nibbles" mid-morning or mid-afternoon, there is nothing like a few cool grapes to keep one going until mealtime. Yum!

You know, I have never cooked with grapes, but they are hands down one of my son's favorite fruits! It would be fun to try some of your recipes with him. He loves to help in the kitchen (cook that is, dishes are another story).

My grape plants are three years old. This is the first year I really had a big crop. What a joy to watch them grow. Fortunately, I managed to harvest more than the birds. Now I need some recipes and advice.

I use all varieties of grapes i can find - they are terrific additions to salads, I toss them with pasta, add them to chicken and pork dishes! Also serve them warm with pancakes - a great replacement or addition to breakfast fare.

I must have been ahead of my time since I never used chemicals to raise the grapes I planted along our fence when we moved into our new home in 1971. The eating of one's own fruits and vegetables raised using natures way is fertilize and protect the crop is pure joy.

I love the crunch and squirt of juice you get from the first bite and all the delicious recipes that grapes can be used in. But most of all, I love to watch my (almost) 2 yr old enjoy such a basic food. And to know that what I am feeding her is not only nutritious but not toxic and that I am teaching her an appreciation of her food and where it comes from.

My favoite grape salad was cut up cooked chicken, pineapple chunks, grapes and chopped celery mixed w/Miracle Whip and a little pinapple juice, but now that I have cardiologists orders to be strict vegetarian now due to an allergy to statins, I have to learn how to cook all over again.Right now my main course is Morningstar veggie burgers and salad and it is getting a little boring after 3 months-but my cholesterol has gone way down, Now I am ready to add a few more interesting dishes to my diet.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.Thanks. Patricia.
