GrapesUPDATE: Thank you to everyone who entered! Congratulations to our winners Shea Fox, William Radkovich, Jennifer Essad, Koren Feinstein, and Carol Martell!

My son has a picture book where a group of animal friends find a treasure map. They run into some trouble – their canoe tips over, they cross a rickety rope bridge, they go through a spooky cave – before they finally get to the spot where the treasure should be. Instead they find a big fruit tree.  That’s when they realize the fruit is the treasure!

That’s how I feel when I walk into the produce section and I see those glistening bunches of red, green and dark, dark purple grapes piled high, like gems overflowing from a treasure chest. It’s when I eat them that I realize what a sweet treasure they really are.

Organic grapes are at their juicy, irresistible peak in Autumn. During this time of year, the organic grapes in our stores hail from California’s Central Valley. Grown without the use of toxic persistent pesticides by farmers who are committed to sustainable agriculture practices, grapes thrive in this region’s deep, fertile soils and plentiful sunshine. Here’s a blog post from last spring that goes into detail about what you get when you buy organic.

Sonoma Chicken SaladAnd who doesn’t love grapes? If you can keep yourself from gobbling them up right away, they can be used in all kinds of recipes. Our Sonoma Chicken Salad is one of our most requested store recipes. We’ve shared a number of glorious grape recipes in this recent blog post, but we want to share even more!

That’s why we’re giving away a copy of Susan Volland’s cookbook Green Black Red: Recipes for cooking and enjoying California grapes to five lucky readers, courtesy of the California Table Grape Commission.

Green Black Red cookbookFrom innovative drinks like Grape Bubble Milk Tea and Grape and Green Tea Smoothies to entertaining dishes like Mediterranean Grilled Chicken and Grape Skewers to kid-friendly fare like the Fresh Trail Mix made of grapes, Cheddar and nuts, Susan covers it all. I can’t decide which I’ll make first, the Creamy Penne with Blue Cheese and Grapes, or the Edamame and Green Grape Salad.

If any of this sounds “grape!” to you, share what you love about organic grapes in the comments below by October 3rd. We’ll pick five winners at random to receive a copy of Green Black Red.

The fine print: No purchase necessary. Promotion ends Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible. Void where prohibited.

We love organic red grapes. Right out of the bag, in salads and even frozen. I freeze them and then the kids pop them in their mouths like little ice pops, blend them into smoothies or add as an edible garnish to desserts. I also place frozen grapes in lunch boxes for a great treat of cold grapes with lunch.

Love putting frozen grapes in my kids' lunches. By lunchtime, they are like little grape slushies! We also use frozen grapes in sparkling water for an afternoon drink on a hot day. Halved grapes with fruit puree can make some really cool popsicles, too! This cookbook would help me move grapes from a fun food to a meal staple!

Living in the great Garden State is such a joy when I can go into my backyard and pick my own organic grapes. When I'm out of them I purchase the green organic grapes from Whole Foods paired with my favorite cheese. DELISH! Thank you for considering my entry.

Fresh, plump, juicy grapes are great to eat all year and are perfect for carrying around for a snack. They are fun frozen and compliment salads whether a plain garden salad or an exotic curried chicken salad.

I love grapes in my yogurt, but my favorite is to add red seedless grapes to cooked chicken and then make a curry chutney yogurt dressing, plus some roasted almonds for crunch. Yummy!

Wow, a grape cookbook! I love fresh grapes and can't stop eating them once I start, but I have never tried to cook with them or use them in anything other than fruit salad. I should have a look at this book!

I can't say I've cooked much with grapes; more often than not I end up eating an entire bag just as is. But I did manage a tuna salad featuring their lovely, fruity presence - wonderful with fresh cilantro and creamy yogurt. Little bites of sweet; yum!

Grapes are so versatile! I stuff them in chicken salad. Pick a color, I've tried each, and the flavor is so unique depending on the variety you choose. Peeling grapes (I know it sounds ugh) but what charisma they lend to a dish, and without all the crunch. No, you don't ALWAYS need a crunchy bite. Grapes add just a craved goodness and sweetness without being so cloyingly sassafras-ish. Boy I haven't said that in a while. Grape on with it.........I do.

We grow organic grapes. I have been processing them in the vita mix blender, freezing them in ice cube trays and using them in our veggie/fruit drinks. It would be very helpful to have this cookbook so I can use the grapes in a variety of ways!

I love organic grapes because I can enjoy the juicy, sweet, tart, flavors and be confident that I am not also feeding my children or myself the horrible pesticides. I have not really every tried grape recipes. We just eat them off the bunch - more addictive than lays, pringles or any other potato chip claim.

It starts with smoothness. Then comes the crunch. And finally, the juicy pulp. Of course they are great in a salad or many creative dishes. But for me, their sweetness is a winner. No need to add cream or sugar, these beauties are a dessert in themselves. As for being organic... On top of health, should we mention flavor?
