UPDATE: Thanks for all of your questions regarding the percentage of fat for the ground grass-fed beef that will be included in this sale. Each region and store will have varying percentages on sale so you will need to reach out to the store where you plan on shopping that day. You can find their contact information at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/list.

Here’s the beef! Mark your calendar for Friday, September 7. Why? Because on that Friday only all of our US stores will have ground grass-fed beef on sale for $4.99 per pound. If you haven’t tried grass-fed beef before, this is the perfect time to see what everyone’s talking about. The rest of you “seasoned” grass-fed beef lovers can take advantage of this opportunity and stock up! This sale is one day only so you’ve got to stop by our stores on Friday, September 7th to pick some up.

Sale valid in our US stores only, while supplies last. Availability and limits may vary by region, so you can contact your store for details. Most of our stores do not provide rain checks for sales like this.

Here’s what to know about grass-fed beef:

  • Grass-fed beef ranching is not only good for the animals, but involves managing natural resources and supporting local producers.
  • Grass-fed beef is a leaner choice and has a more favorable ratio of omega fatty acids.
  • Grass-fed beef is priced fairly for the producer and is worth every penny.
  • Grass-fed beef is a delicious alternative to grain-fed beef and cooks a little differently.

Whether you’re buying the pasture-raised, naturally flavorful ground grass-fed beef during this sale or you’re buying other cuts of beef from our butchers, you’re getting beef that’s 5-Step™ Animal Welfare rated. That means that our farmer partners are dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals and it also means that you know how the animals were raised for the meat that you’re buying.

If this is your first time cooking grass-fed beef, here are some awesome cooking tips from Liz Pearson, one of our recipe developers and food stylists.

Here are some recipes so you can get set for next Friday’s (that’s 9/7) sale on ground grass-fed beef. Green Chile Cheddar Grass-Fed Beef Burgers, anyone?

Remember, this sale on ground grass-fed beef is one day only, so make sure to mark your calendar and stop by one of our US stores on Friday, September 7th to get some!

@SAL ZERILLO - The difference in those labels is that "grass fed" will pertain to the diet while "free range" will describe their living conditions.

Great to hear that there is a sale on grass fed beef. I have been dying to try it but every where I search it has been so expensive. Glad to hear whole foods carries it but also would like to be notified on any future sale of any grass fed meats including chicken, pork, etc.

@BARIKIWAD1 - Not only are the poultry and meat we sell raised without being administered antibiotics or added growth hormones, but our rigorous standards also require producers to prove that their meat and poultry fulfills our strict requirements. You can find information on those requirements on our Quality Standards page at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/about-our-products/quality-standards. If a product is not organic, it could be grown or produced with pesticides or herbicides.

@NICOLENE - Great question. Sometimes cattle can be finished on a ration of part grain and part alfalfa to create a small amount of marbling in the final product. According to the USDA, anything labeled as "grass-fed" must be grass finished in that they cannot have grain at any point. I hope this helps clarify!

@GLENN - According to the USDA claim standards, "hay, haylage, baleage, silage, crop residue without grain, and other roughage sources may also be included as acceptable feed sources". You can see the entire list of standards at http://1.usa.gov/f4kdJp.

If it's true & the beef really is grass fed by feeding on an open range than the price seems to be really low per pound. People are tired of beef that has been washed in amonia (to kill ecoli) and then treated with red food die at the store. Shame on Corporate America for forcing cows, pigs,& sheep to eat corn that's how the Ecoli is started. Do you also carry Buffalo meat - it's awesome. Thanks for giving us REAL FOOD!
