Let’s talk about GMOs at Whole Foods Market

By A.C. Gallo, September 27, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by A.C. Gallo

At Whole Foods Market, we believe consumers have the right to know how their food is produced and this includes whether or not it contains Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

The YouTube video showing our store Team Members giving conflicting responses to a question about GMOs reminds us that while we try to keep all our 70,000 Team Members up-to-speed on the latest information, clearly we need to do more. Some products in our stores DO contain GMOs – just like any other food store in the country, due to the pervasiveness of GMOs – and we need to do a better job of making sure our Team Members understand this so they can provide customers with the facts.

I hope you don’t believe the claims that Whole Foods Market is coaching its Team Members to give false information to its customers, because it’s completely untrue. The idea goes directly against who we are as a company – for years, we’ve worked hard to provide as much information as possible about our products to our customers.

Here are some things about Whole Foods Market and GMOs that you didn’t see in the video – we have:

  • Invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in putting our house brand products through third party non-GMO verification.
  • Worked tirelessly over the years to support organic agriculture to provide the largest variety of organic products that are grown without GMOs seed per the USDA National Organic Standards.
  • Worked one-on-one with hundreds of our supplier partners to encourage them to get their ingredients from Non-GMO sources.
  • Supported mandatory product labeling measures over the years, most recently including California’s Proposition 37 and Washington state’s Initiative Measure 522, with the hope that the state efforts lead to one federal standard.
  • Helped inform and educate our Team Members and shoppers about the complex issue of GMOs and their prevalence in the country’s food supply.
  • Celebrated Non-GMO month every October with displays, signage, and this year a sale, in our stores.
  • Worked hard to provide as many Non-GMO choices for customers as we can.
  • Put close to 5,000 Non-GMO Verified items on our shelves and done more than any other retailer to support Non-GMO verification and prioritize Non-GMO grocery brands.

Our promise to customers is that we will be further educating our Team Members to give good, clear information about GMOs, so that they are providing facts to those customers who have questions. One way we’re ramping up that education is by putting up GMO information centers in our stores for customer and Team Member education. The first ones go up on October 1 in our California stores.

Whole Foods Market has publicly stated its support of California’s Proposition 37 (http://media.wholefoodsmarket.com/news/whole-foods-market-supports-californias-proposition-37). We are not offering a financial donation to the effort because we do not contribute to political campaigns or ballot initiatives as a company policy. Instead, we are supporting the effort by helping inform our Team Members and our customer base with “Vote Yes on Prop 37” signs and information booths in our stores. We’re also highlighting and promoting hundreds of Non-GMO products in our stores throughout October to highlight the availability of these products for our customers.

Ideally, we hope the passing of Proposition 37 will lead to one federal standard for labeling GMOs, similar to how the National Organic Standards were formed. One set of rules and uniform support of a consumer’s right to know would be in everyone’s best interests.

Update: We don’t contribute to political campaigns, ballot initiatives, etc. as a policy set by company leadership who recognize that Whole Foods Market represents the viewpoints of a wide variety of customers and other stakeholders. However, we have heard feedback from our customers about finding additional ways to support this important effort and we are currently evaluating what more we can do to help with getting CA Prop 37 passed. Stay tuned.

Whole Foods has the opportunity and the financial ability to make a huge impact in helping prop 37 to pass, but instead of being as passionate about this issue as your customers are, considering they rely on your word and have given you their trust over all these years, you choose to stand back and watch what happens by taking minimal actions to make it look like your making an honest effort to stop this atrocity from continuing. People shop at your stores because they believe they are making healthy choices and are concerned about their health of not only themselves, but their families as well. Why not take a LEADERSHIP role as a leader in this industry and stand up for what you know is right and make the ripple that you know will get attention. The politically correct response you gave is a sad attempt at pacification of the people you owe your success to. Have some balls and show us your serious about satisfying your proposed mission of awareness by something other than telling your employees that you DO carry products that are GMO laden and putting up posters in your stores. What about all the 10's of 1000's of other potential customers who have no idea what they're eating?... Acknowledging to them that YOU'RE the preferred provider AND promoter of healthy options, would speak VOLUMES to the masses that feel they've been deceived by your marketing practices. This can be cleaned up and you could do a spectacular job doing it, if it's done the best way by employing ALL of the resources at your disposal, including financial resources. Please show us we matter and that you care.

Yes, but if you put your money where your mouth is on Prop 37 itself then it would be more believable that you are on the side of the consumers, not the bottom line of Monsanto! Why do ANY GMO products need to be in your store AT ALL?!? As someone else said: Remember this is the age of the social network. This can go viral very quick.

I, for one, am 10000% thrille that Whole Foods exists. If it wasn't for Whole Foods, there wouldn't even be a debate over this. In fact, there's a good chance many of us wouldn't even be eating organic food if it wasn't for Whole Foods. Don't get me wrong, GMO labeling and Prop 37 is a HUGE issue, but to be throwing the BIGGEST supporter and educator under the buss is hilarious. Do you know where the tire & batteries on your Prius' come from??? I suggest people simply take there business to Von's, Publix, Ralph's, Stop & Shop, Kroegers, Winn Dixie, Safeway, Walmart and any other store that clearly could care less about your health.

It's simple I spent more then $7,500 in your store last year on nothing but organic produce, eggs and nuts and other non processed or packaged foods. I need to know why you have not stepped to the plate with funding for prop 37 ? This is what I want as an educated consumer. Also I eat at your food bar each and every day as I happened to be a vender representative. This is an additional $3,000 per year. To think that there may be the thing I want to avoid most in my daily lunch is unacceptable. My other committed friends say go to farmers markets. This may have to just be where I spend my $10,000 from here on in on principal alone. The food bar is now off limits for me so 3k is gone for you. I am not above protest at all. I was in front of many of your stores collecting petition signatures for this proposition. Fix this or we leave. The shame is on you and you are tainted with distrust.

What took so long?? Did the absence of a stance on this monumental GMO proposition become JUST TOO CONSPICUOUS to keep ignoring? WFM is a company founded on values-- you should have been a part of this from the beginning.

There are things that Whole Foods Market is doing to support the Right to Know campaign that are just as good as donating to the campaign, like putting up their “Vote Yes on Prop 37” signs in the stores. But, when they say, "We are not offering a financial donation to the effort because we do not contribute to political campaigns or ballot initiatives as a company policy," it bears mentioning that Whole Foods contributed at least $180,000 to a successful lobbying campaign to stop the Employee Free Choice Act. Its leadership also contributes to political campaigns. This year, John Mackey is funding Mitt Romney.

GREAT JOB! Way to stand up and meet the scrutiny head on. When I read the articles supporting the video I was a little disappointed, but gave the benefit of the doubt that it could have been simply a lack of consistent thorough training. Hopefully one positive result that comes out of this is just that, better thorough training of employees and transparency by Whole Foods. I also hope that another is full support, both verbally, "on record", monetarily and even more so in the products you carry. As the largest "alternative" foods chain in the US you wield a great deal of power and I hope that you push harder to use if for the betterment of the market AND the consumer. Don

I have watched the video and after reading this explanation of company policy to not get politically involved... with hesitation... I must say thank you. Please remain "politically" neutral in all areas. However, I would like to ask that you be more active to not have the GMO products in your store. Period. Whole Foods knows which products these are. As do WELL informed consumers. But the average shopper gets sucked in by the use of All Natural and the likes. I read and purchase products very carefully. I will be buying more from my local farmers, small health stores now than Whole Foods. The all mighty buck is the loudest voice I have.

If you support Prop 37 and you obviously have a large influence, why aren't you supporting financially? So many small mom & pop companies are giving financially and you could actually make a difference. Yet, you choose not to.

Come on Whole Foods. You do great things, but not financially backing this one? Wow! The companies who profit from the product you sell us are sure backing Monsanto! Pepsico which owns Naked Juice donated $1.7 Million; ConAgr which owns Alexia and LiteLife donated over $1 million; Kellogg which owns Kashi and Gardenburger donated $600,000; CocaCola which owns Odwalla and Honest Tea donated $1 million! YIKES! Without support from corporations like you where do we stand. Unless you help this Prop 37, I will boycott you, too. Thank you for what you have done so far, but don't stop now!

I agree with most of the comment below by Ja-Que' - " I'm glad to see that you are supporting prop 37 in spirit, but a financial donation would go a lot further. I understand not donating to political parties and initiatives, but this is an issue that is directly related to you. It's the health of HUMAN BEINGS." ...I believe there's truth to the old saying ..."put your money where your mouth is". Or we all may have to eat our GMO words...

This is a TURNING POINT that is crucial to our food and you choose to hold to your policy? I have been in your corner for a long time till now. I understand your stating you are supporting other areas for No-GMO but RIGHT NOW WE NEED YOU FOR PROP. 37!! Dr. Mercola gave over a million and Whole Foods zero$!! SAD. BTW: There are points in the You Tube video 'Operation: Whole Foods Hidden Camera GMO Sting - Bait Organic, Switch to GMO' regarding the higher ups and financial stand points that makes all this stink even more! If you don't donate, then how about you get busy and make a NATIONWIDE commercial about supporting the labeling of GMO food AND voting YES for Prop 37!!! This takes you out of your POLICY and will have you in the supportive state you claim to be at this crucial time. Please do so.

Thank you Whole Foods for your post and clarification. I live in Golden Colorado, did not know anything about this video you mentioned, and had an unfortunate experience at my local Whole Foods a few weeks ago. Net, the employee was recently out of training and made it clear that Whole Foods had no GMO's in their store. Even when I challenged him on packaged foods with Soy, Canola or Corn that were not organic or labeled non-GMO. He cared about my questions and concerns and, AFTER consulting a seasoned employee in Customer Service, sought me out to assure me that the store had NO GMO's. I was dumbfounded at the proliferation of bad information internally. All I am is a self-informed customer that knows that zero GMO's in the store is, SADLY, impossible. Though there is company 'policy' not to financially support political campaigns and ballot initiatives, I'd be surprised to learn that the executives and BODs at Whole Foods don't have the voting authority to override or update a policy in extreme circumstances. It looks like the Company has made the decision not to consider that in the case of GMO labeling. Please, if the Whole Foods leadership team makes the decision not to override existing company policy and financially contribute to CA Prop 37 (and future GMO related regulations) please SIGNIFICANTLY increase your investment in product sourcing, internal education, customer education, in-store signage and outbound marketing to help consumers make informed decisions and drive much needed long term change. The widely recognized Whole Foods brand and customer reach gives Whole Foods the opportunity, and responsibility, to effect change before there are lasting consequences to our food supply. We are now at a tipping point and I am truly frightened by the prospect of our future food supply due to GMO's, pesticides, issues with honey bees, etc. I thank you in advance for your expeditious action against the GMO issue.

No offense, I was a staunch support of WF, but you really are talking out of both sides and contradicting yourself. If you only knew the money i spent in your stores, you might pay attention. Prop 37 needs your money, but let's not talk about the brands you carry in your store that support those who oppose 37 and then let's pretend that you don't support them. It's obvious your employees don't know your stance either and they are very confused about what GMO is. Yet, while our children are poisoned by the food products you carry in your store and yet you claim Whole Food. That is really an oxymoron! There is nothing whole about GMO and it is proven. If you really were conscious, you would really carry Whole products and do away with the rest and then we really would have whole and real foods and buy our products in a store we can trust. I personally know, you turned Joan Gundermann away and would not buy her organic produce. I know you turned homestead healthy foods away to buy their grass fed meat and you say you support local? Yet you buy your grass fed meat from New Zealand? Who has built your empire? Certainly not New Zealand. Let's talk about your rights to your share holders? And let's pretend that you support Prop 37. I called your VP's years ago when I noticed the junk cereal you were carrying in your stores in Houston. I asked then about supporting local farmers then and why they started carrying un whole products on your shelve. I will never forget when you took out the real juice bar in Houston and put in Jamba juice. Distguisting-all for profit, never mind the people who came to the juice bar and then shopped at your store! Next, I expect you will be offering the Flu Vaccine because it's natural. You don't fool me! I will never forget the "California Style Vegetable" you sold, yet when you looked to see where it was made: "MADE IN CHINA" !!!! You are a good thing gone bad. Just think what it would mean if you supported Prop 37? Just imagine what it would mean to the farmers who monsanto has stolen their farms and don't pretend you are not aware of that. By the way, I used to spend my money in your store and now I don't! Perhaps you will change your ways and really be a real whole foods? Just maybe? Even Chipolte has contraced with organic rice farmers for their products to make and sell in their stores? If you support it, they will come.
