Let’s talk about GMOs at Whole Foods Market

By A.C. Gallo, September 27, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by A.C. Gallo

At Whole Foods Market, we believe consumers have the right to know how their food is produced and this includes whether or not it contains Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

The YouTube video showing our store Team Members giving conflicting responses to a question about GMOs reminds us that while we try to keep all our 70,000 Team Members up-to-speed on the latest information, clearly we need to do more. Some products in our stores DO contain GMOs – just like any other food store in the country, due to the pervasiveness of GMOs – and we need to do a better job of making sure our Team Members understand this so they can provide customers with the facts.

I hope you don’t believe the claims that Whole Foods Market is coaching its Team Members to give false information to its customers, because it’s completely untrue. The idea goes directly against who we are as a company – for years, we’ve worked hard to provide as much information as possible about our products to our customers.

Here are some things about Whole Foods Market and GMOs that you didn’t see in the video – we have:

  • Invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in putting our house brand products through third party non-GMO verification.
  • Worked tirelessly over the years to support organic agriculture to provide the largest variety of organic products that are grown without GMOs seed per the USDA National Organic Standards.
  • Worked one-on-one with hundreds of our supplier partners to encourage them to get their ingredients from Non-GMO sources.
  • Supported mandatory product labeling measures over the years, most recently including California’s Proposition 37 and Washington state’s Initiative Measure 522, with the hope that the state efforts lead to one federal standard.
  • Helped inform and educate our Team Members and shoppers about the complex issue of GMOs and their prevalence in the country’s food supply.
  • Celebrated Non-GMO month every October with displays, signage, and this year a sale, in our stores.
  • Worked hard to provide as many Non-GMO choices for customers as we can.
  • Put close to 5,000 Non-GMO Verified items on our shelves and done more than any other retailer to support Non-GMO verification and prioritize Non-GMO grocery brands.

Our promise to customers is that we will be further educating our Team Members to give good, clear information about GMOs, so that they are providing facts to those customers who have questions. One way we’re ramping up that education is by putting up GMO information centers in our stores for customer and Team Member education. The first ones go up on October 1 in our California stores.

Whole Foods Market has publicly stated its support of California’s Proposition 37 (http://media.wholefoodsmarket.com/news/whole-foods-market-supports-californias-proposition-37). We are not offering a financial donation to the effort because we do not contribute to political campaigns or ballot initiatives as a company policy. Instead, we are supporting the effort by helping inform our Team Members and our customer base with “Vote Yes on Prop 37” signs and information booths in our stores. We’re also highlighting and promoting hundreds of Non-GMO products in our stores throughout October to highlight the availability of these products for our customers.

Ideally, we hope the passing of Proposition 37 will lead to one federal standard for labeling GMOs, similar to how the National Organic Standards were formed. One set of rules and uniform support of a consumer’s right to know would be in everyone’s best interests.

Update: We don’t contribute to political campaigns, ballot initiatives, etc. as a policy set by company leadership who recognize that Whole Foods Market represents the viewpoints of a wide variety of customers and other stakeholders. However, we have heard feedback from our customers about finding additional ways to support this important effort and we are currently evaluating what more we can do to help with getting CA Prop 37 passed. Stay tuned.

After listening to video's on infowars website (great coverage of this GMO issue), I also visited Whole Foods web site to read about their side of the issue. Personally, I am very disappointed with Whole Foods attitude and philosophy on NOT donating to a cause (Prop 37) that is so pivotal to their customer's reasoning for shopping at their stores. It really doesn't make any sense to not put your full support into Prop 37. As I'm sure most people first thought (years ago, when GMO was first introduced) that GMO's would help resolve food production issues (bug infestation, weather issues, diseases, etc...), but the tradeoff isn't worth the risk. From my understanding, there are many countries in Europe that will not even allow GMO food products. Also, the tests results of rats show that they become infertile within three generations. My understanding is that rats are used for these type of tests because of their quick reproduction and faster test results on the safety of food products. I realize that we're not comparing apples to apples (humans versus a rat), but the results should be seriously considered going forward on the selling of these potentially deadly GMO products.

The answer given for not supporting Prop 37 is weak-willed for a company that took in 10 billion in sales last year. As a leader in the market, WF needs to be making a huge donation to a cause that is so crucial to it's customers & to it's own business practices. Put your money where your mouth is. Stop carrying brands whose parent company is donating $$ against Prop 37. That in itself would be a huge sign of support! I will not buy your brand until I am more satisfied with your policies. Sincerely~~

I'm happy to hear about the steps being taken to support Prop37. This is very encouraging. I also fully support and uphold the fact that WFM employees are not coached by leadership to give misinformation. However, I disagree with the notion that WFM wants to remain apolitical. Mackey donated to Romney while other execs to Obama. I want WFM to defend organic standards and donate to support Prop37!

I reiterate, Whole Foods has long been regarded as a leader in the organic-food field and must now put its money where its mouth is in support of Proposition 37. This is a game-changing prop, and Whole Foods must help lead the way in the fight against life-killing GMOs by offering substantial funding of Prop 37 and at least labelng the GMOs it sells at its stores, I have not bought anything from WF since I discovered that the WF organization has not yet supported Prop 37 with substantial funding and still sells unlabeled GMOS, and I am asking my friends to follow my example. Please step up to the plate!!! You have become an important part of our communities and have profited enormously from our patronage, and we now look to you for leadership!

As a consumer, I am not asking for a business to completely remove GMO's from your shelves b/c I understand just how saturated the market is. What I request is simply to identify what products are certified USDA organic and GMO free so that we can make the better choices as informed consumers. It doesn't take much to get this information from your vendors when they realize just how much business it will bring and therefore make you a responsible marketplace.

Thank you for your response to this issue. It is very, very important to your customers. More than anything else we want to be able to trust the organic standard and our food retailers. Otherwise, all is lost.

As election day approaches, it's amazing how un-educated some people are about where companies stand with certain ballot initiatives. I believe everyone has a right to their opinions and the freedom to share those, but it would be nice if they would do a little more homework first, evaluate it, then if they decide they have more questions or things seem unclear ask first/post your opinion second. Just sayin'. Know your facts people! - Steven Smith, Store Team Leader at Folsom, CA Whole Foods Market

While I can appreciate that it may take more work and training your employees on the facts of your policy's on GMOs and that you may have information in your stores for your customers . I still feel that if whole foods really knew the dangers of poisonous GMOs that there would not have been any need for a video .that whole foods would never have avoided telling the truth and would of supported the customers in this extremely important issue! I believe that as a responsible member of our communities that supporting the rights of the PEOPLE you serve should be your utmost priority ! It should not be looked at as POLITICAL, but rather a matter of health and welfare of all of US! If you areAmerican than you need tostand beside the people who support you! We will remember who supports our rights and those who do not.

So sad for your company to even allow GMOs in your stores. Btw very few of your team member were knowledgeable about GMOs, knew whether your shops sell GMOs and suggested way to avoid them and as far as I remember from the video, not even one of them said anything about Prop 37. Whole Foods is just like any other company, taking advantage of people with misleading marketing and the profits of your shareholders as a priority. We saw more "Organic food companies" supporting with their silence or money Monsanto. It is very easy to say that you have tried so hard to educate your customers and you are "not allowed" to participate in political campaigns... How cheap is that? Why do you still keep lying? People look like a bunch of brainless chicken to you?

Yes, Whole Foods was caught with GMOs on the selves. Step up, Whole Foods and move forward for our sake. Please continue to be vigilant about GMO's. As consumers we are nearly unarmed and under-informed when it comes to avoiding GMOs when we choose to do so. I have always looked to Whole Foods to be on the front line and VIGILANT about GMOs. Be our advocate. Hold our trust. Please

Dear Whole Foods, It is extremely disappointing to find out that your stores are knowingly selling artificially engineered, genetically altered food/ingredients/supplements. Your slogan, "NOTHING ARTIFICIAL, EVER" is misleading, untrue, and is simply deceptive false advertising. This is very sad for families who think that have been making the right choice by shopping at your 'healthy' store, now to find out that they have been feeding your genetically altered food to their children. The people have trusted you, and now that trust has been broken. Most of the workers, and certainly the overwhelming majority of the customers, at Whole Foods support organic foods and mandatory labeling of GMOs. It’s time for the executives and the top brass to stop the lies and obfuscation, to stop the greenwashing, and to atone for the fact that they’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars in profit over the years by selling non-organic, so-called “natural” foods and supplements that contain GMOs. What we ask of you now, is action. You say that you support Prop 37 in California, but you have not donated a cent towards making it happen. It's time for this multi-billion corporation and its wealthy executives to put their money where their mouth is, and make a sizeable donation to the California ballot Initiative to label genetically engineered foods. Whole Foods is either with us or against us. You action will make it clear.

Prop 37 Is Just The Beginning - milk from cows that eat GMO corn is GMO milk - eggs that come from chickens that eat GMO corn are GMO eggs - beef that comes from cows that eat GMO corn is GMO beef Dictionary.com has the following definitions of the word natural: nat·u·ral   [nach-er-uhl, nach-ruhl] Show IPA adjective 1.existing in or formed by nature ( opposed to artificial): a natural bridge. 2.based on the state of things in nature; constituted by nature: Growth is a natural process. 3.of or pertaining to nature or the universe: natural beauty. 4.of, pertaining to, or occupied with the study of natural science: conducting natural experiments. 5.in a state of nature; uncultivated, as land. Dear Whole Foods, how can you label your GMO-food as natural without your customers considering it deceptive advertising?

What's really sad (besides WFM attitude regarding this GMO issue), is that (as of today October 8th), there have ONLY been 261 comments on WFM site regarding this specific post. Really! Only 261 comments! There should be 10's of thousands. This topic started taking comments a couple weeks ago. I really thought that WFM would have more educated concerned shoppers commenting on this issue.

Thank you for not financially supporting political campaigns! I strongly believe that votes should be educated and vote for themselves, which does not require that money be pointlessly spent on campaign advertising. There are much more important things to be spending money on. I also would like to point out to people that Whole Foods has never claimed to NOT sell food containing GMOs. It is the fault of the uneducated person for ASSUMING that they do not. Anyone who is actually concerned with the issue should KNOW to read details in ingredients, and not just look for big bold signs on their food. That's like a "vegetarian" assuming that all cans of vegetable soup are vegetarian friendly. You have to be educated and pay attention to things, not blame it on other people.

I am a huge fan of Whole Foods. However, no amount of GMOs are healthy. No amount of GMOs are good for the earth and for wildlife, etc. This is being forced upon us. There are no groups of people anywhere begging for GMO foods. I would love to see WF become a leader in this. I'd love to see WF take a stand, and come out and say that they are going to start eliminating products that contain GMOs. Just because it is the right thing to do. Thank you.

Don't you see that it is up to you to pass Prop 37? Right now the corporate forces have joined together in an almost unbeatable force. In the interest of the health of the nation as well as your own financial health. I would suggest that you make an exception to your "no political contribution" policy this one time and let the chips fall where they may. Be brave! You will be amply rewarded. Al the best, joscarli

Whole Foods- Please hear your customer. The point that we are trying to make is to stop cozying up to Monsanto. Whole Foods, you've been one of the biggest proponents against GMOs and you even educate your consumers, yet you knowingly sell this garbage in your stores. You are making a profit off of selling GMOs and therefore you are indirectly supporting Monsanto. We expect better from WF. It is the principle of the whole thing. We vote with our dollars and as much as I love WF, I will be shopping elsewhere until you prove whose side you are on. The fact that Whole Foods hasn't given a penny to support the customer's rights after we, the customer have supported them, is very disturbing to say the least. Please put your money where your mouth is. You could even donate the 10 cent bag refund to Prop 37. This is our big opportunity to have GMOs labeled on our products and we need to take a stand. Even Dr Mercola and some small organic businesses have given their financial support. (we need to thank them and support these companies). Whole Foods your integrity is on the line. You cannot serve two masters. Your customers will hold you accountable and I truly hope you do the right thing.

I was shocked and disappointed to learn 1) that Whole Foods carries GMOs, 2) that you only recently offered a tepid "endorsement" of Prop 37, 3) that you are proliferating the same misinformation about GMOs as some of the opponents, and 4) that you have offered no financial support. I live in Boulder Colorado where I have many options for organic grocery stores. I will be checking all of them to see whether any of them have more spine than your company. If it's an organic grocery store there should be no GMOs!!!
