Let’s talk about GMOs at Whole Foods Market

By A.C. Gallo, September 27, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by A.C. Gallo

At Whole Foods Market, we believe consumers have the right to know how their food is produced and this includes whether or not it contains Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

The YouTube video showing our store Team Members giving conflicting responses to a question about GMOs reminds us that while we try to keep all our 70,000 Team Members up-to-speed on the latest information, clearly we need to do more. Some products in our stores DO contain GMOs – just like any other food store in the country, due to the pervasiveness of GMOs – and we need to do a better job of making sure our Team Members understand this so they can provide customers with the facts.

I hope you don’t believe the claims that Whole Foods Market is coaching its Team Members to give false information to its customers, because it’s completely untrue. The idea goes directly against who we are as a company – for years, we’ve worked hard to provide as much information as possible about our products to our customers.

Here are some things about Whole Foods Market and GMOs that you didn’t see in the video – we have:

  • Invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in putting our house brand products through third party non-GMO verification.
  • Worked tirelessly over the years to support organic agriculture to provide the largest variety of organic products that are grown without GMOs seed per the USDA National Organic Standards.
  • Worked one-on-one with hundreds of our supplier partners to encourage them to get their ingredients from Non-GMO sources.
  • Supported mandatory product labeling measures over the years, most recently including California’s Proposition 37 and Washington state’s Initiative Measure 522, with the hope that the state efforts lead to one federal standard.
  • Helped inform and educate our Team Members and shoppers about the complex issue of GMOs and their prevalence in the country’s food supply.
  • Celebrated Non-GMO month every October with displays, signage, and this year a sale, in our stores.
  • Worked hard to provide as many Non-GMO choices for customers as we can.
  • Put close to 5,000 Non-GMO Verified items on our shelves and done more than any other retailer to support Non-GMO verification and prioritize Non-GMO grocery brands.

Our promise to customers is that we will be further educating our Team Members to give good, clear information about GMOs, so that they are providing facts to those customers who have questions. One way we’re ramping up that education is by putting up GMO information centers in our stores for customer and Team Member education. The first ones go up on October 1 in our California stores.

Whole Foods Market has publicly stated its support of California’s Proposition 37 (http://media.wholefoodsmarket.com/news/whole-foods-market-supports-californias-proposition-37). We are not offering a financial donation to the effort because we do not contribute to political campaigns or ballot initiatives as a company policy. Instead, we are supporting the effort by helping inform our Team Members and our customer base with “Vote Yes on Prop 37” signs and information booths in our stores. We’re also highlighting and promoting hundreds of Non-GMO products in our stores throughout October to highlight the availability of these products for our customers.

Ideally, we hope the passing of Proposition 37 will lead to one federal standard for labeling GMOs, similar to how the National Organic Standards were formed. One set of rules and uniform support of a consumer’s right to know would be in everyone’s best interests.

Update: We don’t contribute to political campaigns, ballot initiatives, etc. as a policy set by company leadership who recognize that Whole Foods Market represents the viewpoints of a wide variety of customers and other stakeholders. However, we have heard feedback from our customers about finding additional ways to support this important effort and we are currently evaluating what more we can do to help with getting CA Prop 37 passed. Stay tuned.

How can you have on the side of some of your stores the words "Nothing Artificial Ever" and not think you are misleading consumers?

Thank you for the clarification, Whole Foods. There's been an awful lot of misinformation going around about you. This organic and anti-GMO consumer will continue to patronize Whole Foods as a continued first choice for shopping.

I have two stances on this. It's sad people aren't informed that you're just like a regular grocery store, carrying the unhealthy products right along side the healthy, organic products; you just happen to specialize more in the healthy, organic stuffs. That being said, I will have to ask, where along the way did you lose your core principles when this company started; or have these been your true intentions all along?

I feel that behind the scenes, when it really comes down to it, Whole Foods does not care enough - and also puts profit over principle and the well being of its consumers. These days corporations are in charge of everything, and so they have to have a good social character. With the mega profits they make, Whole Foods could compromise a little on the bottom line to contribute. In the end, if the forces of good prevail in the U.S., as they did in Europe and around the world to eradicate this toxic monopoly, Whole Foods will be ahead. But now, folks who are really paying attention like the scientists, doctors and athletic coaches are starting to limit their purchases at Whole Foods in recognizing that they throw so much food away by overstocking (forwarding expansion), instead of limiting things so that, what they do have has solid health content and quality. More and more Whole Foods things have GMO, like their soy, salad bar, deli and sandwhich mayonnaise is regular canola! Please step up - you are the only hope Whole Foods! We might as well go to Ralph's or eat less altogether, since your products are becoming indistinguishable from regular stores more and more. Monsanto, the movie, must be shown to the public more. Right now only professional athletes, movie stars and scientists watch their diet

If you don't contribute to political campaigns, why are your executives doing it or they do not follow your procedures/policy??? Why don't you want to label the GMO foods in your store? I won't buy a single product from you until you start to label them!!! That's it

After learning that Whole Foods was not financially supporting the passing of Prop 37, I had to know more. What I have read here initially sounds lovely, except for the part where you say you're not financially supporting Prop 37! Your company has the money to make a huge difference. You will lose so many customers by not financially supporting this. You still have time to change your company policy. You can choose to support this with your $. To avoid a major boycott by the very people who made you as successful as you are, you must do 2 things: 1. Offer a substantial amount of financial support to Prop 37 to show you really do care about this issue and your uninformed customers and employees, and 2. STOP buying and selling GMO foods! Stock your shelves with all organics, or at least Non-GMO Project certified products! I am avoiding your store until I hear better news from you. I am disappointed. My family spends between $700-$900/month at one of your stores. Now I am searching for the products I like at smaller health food stores.

Your response above is correct- More education is desperately needed for your employees. I often lecture at WHOLE FOODS across the country, and I have been told that employees may attend informational seminars 'on their own time' . Your employees are WONDERFUL, committed individuals who would benefit greatly from having a few hours a month of paid education time. I lecture internationally on this and many other issues in organic food and natural medicine. Another issue is BENZOATES- for some reason you drop the 'no benzoate' requirement in liquid supplements- even though benzoates release benzene rings , especially when they come in contact with vitamin c or other antioxidants- which are always present in liquid supplements. I would be happy to discuss these issue in more detail with your TEAM. I would like to say that I am a committed Whole Food Shopper and have been since your inception. I honor your effort and success at bringing organic and natural to a mainstream public who may never have had access to it without your friendly, clean and accessible stores! Thats great that you do not get involved in outside issues but Prop 37 is directly related to your business so I disagree with your position to not help finance the passing of this bill. I avoid feeding my husband any GMO products due to his recent bout with cancer and his desire to eat only organic non GMO food..how uninformed of me to believe I could buy any product from your store to meet this goal. Why don't you do the right thing now and support Prop 37 whole heartedly for your customers and stop purchasing any products that are not truly organic and GMO free..your customers rely on you to do so.

"We don’t contribute to political campaigns, ballot initiatives, etc. as a policy set by company leadership" Of course you would have a policy in place for this, how convenient. Ok so WholeFoods as a company will not financially contribute, how about you executives on a personal level, you can more than afford to contribute something. Show us you TRULY care. The real reason why you will not financially endorse the Prop 37 is because it would financially affect your profits!! . What's wrong with this world when profits are more important than health. I will boycott WholeFoods going forward until I see them change their ways. Don't be stupid people, just because they "SAY" they are supporting Prop 37 doesn't really mean they "support" Prop 37. get it! They're just saying it because of the youtube scandal, it's called Public Relations on the defense. Don't be fooled.

I have been a loyal Whole Foods shopper for many years, but am disheartened by this controversy. Just this year, I was reassurred by a Whole Foods employee that NOTHING IN THE STORE CONTAINS GMO. I have paid the higher prices for my food in order to avoid GMO's, pesticides, etc. Now I even have to wonder about the contents of my food from Whole Foods. Had I not been mislead by Whole Food's own employee, I might not now be so very disappointed in them. I truly hope Whole Foods will right the ship.

Thank you Whole Foods for clarifying this - (Nikki) I hope that prop 37 passes next month and so that it will be easier for me and everyone else to spot the GMO products. Hopefully by shopping GMO free, our consumer monies will convince big food companies to provide healthier foods for everyone. Thank you again!

I am disappointed that you would side with the monsters that have no regard for human beings and only focus on profits. The reason you got so big was because you were a perceived breath of fresh air in allowing us to have sound food choices. Now you as many good intended freshman politicians have been tainted by greed and seem to be partnering with money over integrity. I will no longer shop here until you change your stance and prove it!

I understand that you have policies that you have to stick to, such as not contributing to ballot initiatives. Along the same lines, I cannot support a store that claims to be health conscious yet cannot stand behind those values. You say "that Whole Foods Market represents the viewpoints of a wide variety of customers and other stakeholders." You aren't a normal market geared towards the general public. If you are now saying that you are, then I will have to stop shopping at Whole Foods and go to a smaller market that actually supports what I believe in. Furthermore, it says it all in your name--WHOLE Foods, NOT Partially Whole Foods. Why name your market that if it doesn't ring true? It is misleading. If you do not donate money to Prop 37 I will not continue shopping at WF. I have been a loyal customer since 1998. I'm just glad that I DO have other options like Farmers Markets and smaller super markets that are proud of their message of WHOLE foods and do support Prop 37. If you can't support my Right To Know, I can't support you. I do hope you reconsider, if only for my personal reasons. I admit I will miss shopping at Whole Foods after all these years.

This is a flimsy rebuttal to this unfortunate revelation. You just lost my hard earned dollars. Don't want to support a political campaign? No problem, just stop supporting Monsanto and their ilk by NOT PUTTING GMO PRODUCTS ON YOUR SHELVES! It's that easy! Whole Foods has a big enough market share to send a loud and clear message to the Monsanto and their kind. GREED and DECEPTION = WHOLE FOODS. My dollars are now going to the local community market. At least they are honest. It seems like a no brainer. Your customers looked to you to be honest and provide a natural non-GMO product. Require your vendors to disclose their ingredients, no matter how far down the production chain and your customers will trust you again. Until then. So sorry, I'm not giving one more hard earned cent to your company.

I keep seeing Monsanto pop up in the comments and need to ask, "Just what is your relationship with Monsanto?" Their company philosophy sure does seem to be the antithesis of what you espouse at Whole Foods. Regarding donating to Prop 37, if you think the money you invest in vetting your own brand constitutes enough of a donation to the greater good, then just say so. But that just seems like good business to me. Actually, it seems investing in that cause would be good business too. Does Monsanto have a figurative gun to your head?

How many items in the cooked deli foods can you honestly say are not GMO's? Be honest now. That's one department whole foods has 100% control over.

As a customer for many years I enjoy many of your products. I thought your company was very vigilant against Monstanto and Big Business. As long as you support "the little guy" and don't give in to temptation, I will continue shopping at your establishment. I would think very carefully before putting more GMO in your stores. The tide is turning and the more GMOs you have, the less business you will get- I assure you that. People are ready to boycott your stores at this moment, so remember who is keeping you guys where you are. Thank you

I realize it would take a lot of time & labor hours, but have u considered voluntarily labeling each product as No GMO and GMO? That would solve the transparency issue and the requirement of ensuring every employee of every store knowing the content of every product

Shame on you WF. Get behind the Prop 37 with REAL $upport! Stop misleading your own employees to proliferate lies about your company. There is NOTHING natural about GMO...in corn and soy grain fed vegetarian meat, in soy lecithin in chocolate bars and ice cream, in soy and corn products in cereals and granolas. Take the time to hold your managers responsible to educate every employee that every whole foods contains GMOs in MANY of their products. You say you CANT donate because its against policy...well then at least let US donate by rounding up our purchase price or giving our bag refund!!!

As a customer who spends easily $10,000 annually at your store, specifically because I care about nourishing my body with high quality, organic products, it's deeply disturbing to learn that GMO ingredients are making it onto Whole Foods shelves. While it is encouraging to hear of the great efforts WF has taken to be responsible about it's relationship to the GMO problem, it's apparent the company has failed to educate it's customers about the GMO ingredients known to be present in certain non-365 brands. Whole Foods has built it's reputation on being a stickler for ensuring the products they carry contain only quality ingredients. In fact, not everyone may know, the Whole Foods name is directly associated with the emerging concept of Conscious Capitalism, a movement who's core principles are built on "TRUST, compassion, collaboration and value creation". Surely, no one would argue that "transparency" is a critical component of trust. In this case then, to me, the larger matter of WF's relationship to CA Prop 37 while important, falls second to the more immediate point: WF should have already taken, and certainly, moving forward, SHOULD take the measure of informing customers about the presence of GMO's with "in-house" generated warning labels: "THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS GMO INGREDIENTS" or "THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN MANUFACTURED BY A COMPANY KNOWN TO USE GMO INGREDIENTS." If we are being informed about products that may contain known allergens, we unquestionably should be alerted to the presence of GMO's. Now, if there is a legal reason why WF is prevented from educating it's customers, product by product, it would be helpful to know this is the case. Obviously, we would then understand the ways in which WF's "hands are tied" until Prop 37 passes. If, however, there are no legal restrictions about in-house labeling, then the problem seems easily solved... empower us with information. Let us know when GMO's are present and leave it to us to choose an alternative GMO free product.
