Weekend Sale: Non-GMO Project Verified Products

By Paige Brady, October 17, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Paige Brady

As American consumers, we have a right to know what we are eating. One of the important choices anyone can make is whether or not to eat foods containing GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms, also called genetically engineered ingredients). Because GMOs are pervasive in our food supply, many familiar foods we sell may contain them. And because food manufacturers are not required to label them, many Americans are not even aware that GMOs are in many of their favorite foods.

As America’s leading retailer of natural and organic foods, Whole Foods Market® is proud to support GMO choice and transparency, such as supporting labeling efforts like Proposition 37 in California and also by providing our customers with the most Non-GMO and organic products available anywhere. And we are really excited to announce that all Whole Foods Market® stores in the US and Canada will have hundreds of Non-GMO Project Verified products on sale this weekend, from Friday, October 19 through Sunday, October 21.

We’ve supported mandatory product labeling measures over the years, most recently California’s Proposition 37 and Washington State’s Initiative Measure 522, with the hope that these state efforts will lead to one federal standard. We also work one-on-one with hundreds of our supplier partners to encourage them to get their ingredients from Non-GMO sources.

Non GMO ProjectHere are some ways you can avoid GMOs while supporting ingredient choice and transparency:

  • Go organic! The USDA National Organic Standards do not allow genetically engineered seed and ingredients in the growth and production of organic foods.
  • Look for the Non-GMO Project Verified seal, which indicates the product has passed a third-party verification program indicating that a product has been produced according to best practices and procedures to avoid the intentional use of GMO ingredients.
  • Buy 365 Everyday Value® organic food products and plant-based non-organic 365 Everyday Value® food products -- both sourced to avoid genetically engineered ingredients.
  • Shop our Non-GMO Project Verified sale this weekend!

Please celebrate Non-GMO month with us by taking advantage of our sale this weekend. Beyond this weekend and this month, if having non-GMO options are important to you, purchase from companies whose products are non-GMO verified and show your support for organics.

How much money have you given to support Prop 37?

I think it's hugely important that you label the products as GMO if they are. I am a weekly WF shopper because I trust the food source. But I want to be sure that I can trust it.

Sorry if I missed something in the post -- but is there a listing somewhere of all the foods that will be on sale this weekend that are GMO-free? I tried clicking the link and it took me to the GMO verification page, which, while is a great site, did not have the information I was looking for. Thanks.

Thank you for celebrating Non-GMO's by having the sale this weekend. Even better would be to mark clearly all non-GMO food so that we can support those companies and not poison ourselves, and the best would be not to carry any GMO's at all 365 or otherwise.

We fully support GMO labeling and continue to support markets who offer safe wholesome non-GMO products. We drive more than 30 miles to our nearest Whole Foods market weekly and would hope that Whole Foods will consider putting a store in the lower southeast Michigan area in the near future.

Quite frankly I think the support that WF has done so far towards Prop 37 has been lame and shameful! You have not donated any money but you make millions. You carry GMO's in your store but don't identify them. Your employee's have been exposed as either being purposefully misleading or just plain ignorant in regards to GMOs in your store and 365 products. I have limited my shopping at WF and will only purchase items that I can't get from other sources such as the Green Polka Dot Box, a completely GMO free online supplier. For anyone who isn't sure what I'm talking about check out Natural News. You can't find the expose' revealing the WF GMO scam because YouTube censored it. This is really just a way to deflect the fall out from being exposed. How's that for corporatism.

Labels please and signs -- make finding these products easy. I've become very sensitive to GMO wheat and corn, not sure about the other grains. Anything you can do to make finding things I can eat will be greatly appreciated!

I must commend you on the Non--GMO Verified Products Sale. I pray that Proposition 37 passes in CA. It would be so much easier shopping at Whole Foods if you did not carry any GMO products . I find that I spend alot of my time in the store reading labels and would not have to if you only carried Organic & Non-GMO products. Hopefully, one day soon it will be this way! Thank You, Patricia

I appreciate the non-GMO sale. I also thank Whole Foods for supporting Prop 37 in California. I would like it even more if Whole Foods would require labeling of all GMO products in its stores.

I would be interested to know the commitment of Whole Foods to non-GMO products and their labeling. You say that you support labeling, so that consumers have a clear choice, but has Whole Foods contributed to California's Proposition 37 that would demand labeling for these products? If not, it would be a good idea to do so, to counter the vast amounts spent by Monsanto and other agri-businesses.

Whole Foods has been duplicitous about its support for Prop 37 and to date has donated $0 while its myriad producers/suppliers (from Kelloggs- ie Kashi, to Dean Foods- i.e. Horizon Organic- have donated hundreds of thousands to defeat prop 37 and make sure YOU do not learn what is in your food. Whole Foods did not even voice its public support of the measure until it received a tremendous amount of hate mail from customers demanding it supported our right to know. Now WF hides behind a - we can't contribute to Prop 37 because it would be a political contribution and we are not political! This is ridiculous and every time we shop at Whole Foods we are being political and voting with our dollars, which WF is pocketing and then playing at being America's first "Organic Grocer" but guess what- Organic prohibits the use of GMOs so here we are being duped by the WF empire. If you support Prop 37, support it financially or you might as well retract these sad and silly sales and posters. Too little too late. Shame on you!

I appreciate Whole Foods Market's support of GMO transparency and labeling. I feel it is a human right to know what we are eating and to have a choice not to consume GMO foods whose safety and long-term effects on our bodies has not been verified.

One can read all kinds of negative press about your function regarding prop 37. You have to understand that many, many people, your customers, count on you. GMo free food is our birthright and we need that option no matter what. PLease, do not succumb to the pressure of Monsanto and their servants. Please!

I am a bit disappointed with Wholefood that you have not taken more leading role in pro GMO labeling for this election. I do not see in any wholefood store any banners for proposition 37 passing. There are organizations who donated money for that cause but not wholefoods very disappointing.

What has whole foods done to support prop 37 in California? Has WF donated money supporting prop 37? Also, 20-30% of all products sold at WF are GMOs which are helping Monsanto !

Thanks for making these products available and on sale! I don't want any GMO foods on my plate! And that typically means organic unless it is labeled heirloom. We deserve to know whether or not our food has been modified. And basically and processed food contains something made from a GMO crop, especially corn (and all the weird things made from corn) and canola oil. I don't want Roundup-ready food in my body! Or anything with spider genes.

Very interesting. Is your 365 brand really "non GMO"? HOw do i know which farmer to ask? How about your Califronia Style Organic Frozen Vegetables Made in China? Are those non gmo? And what agency validates the claim? JUst curious.

Better yet....................why? allow GMO foods in your stores? That would be the "far better" message. It is sad to me - to know that Europe has banned GMO's and yet each & every day when we shop for food for our families, we are "compromising" our health - even where we pay m-o-r-e for food we think is healthier, such as what we purchase @ Whole Foods.

Many of the large corporations; i.e., Monsanto, Coca Cola, etc. have donated huge amounts of money to defeat proposition 37 in California. I have read that Whole Foods has not donated at all to defeat proposition 37, is this true? And if it is true, why would Whold Foods not donate?
