By David Pilat, November 8, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by David Pilat
Time to rework that Thanksgiving menu! This Friday only, November 12th, Whole Foods Market is featuring 31/40 count (medium) cooked shrimp at just $5.99 per pound! These tasty shrimp are cooked, peeled and deveined too, with just the tail left on, perfect for dipping or pasta recipes.  And, yes, I said $5.99 per pound —that’s around 50% off! We’re making it available in two ways: thawed ready to eat and frozen in 2–pound bags — either way, it’s only $5.99 per pound. You can stock up for the holiday season. Since this deal is so crazy good, we are limiting each customer to no more than 10 pounds so everybody can get in on the fun. Need some ideas for how to prepare your shrimp? Try these faves: It’s time to throw a party and show off just a little. Cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp makes it fast and easy, and this sale makes it super economical.  Come see us on Friday, November 12th!
XX = Amount of savings varies by store.

I know Whole Foods has a commitment to sustainable seafood. What's the origin of these shrimp? Thanks!

Any way to place an order and have it held? We are going out of town on Friday and won't be back until Monday afternoon. Would love to take advantage of this great offer! Thank you!

@Mic: That's a decision that needs to be made by the store at which you shop. I suggest reaching out to your local seafood counter to see if they can accomodate you. Thanks!

Are the shrimp farm raised? I ate shrimp at a restaurant and it tasted like mud...super gross.

I, too, wondered the origin of these shrimp? Also, I wonder if I could get them raw, instead of cooked? But still cleaned & deveined. Thanks!

You can read this blog post about where our farm-raised shrimp comes from and why it's so special (and tasty). http://blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/2010/11/what-sets-our-shrimp-apart/ Also, Shelley, the 1-day sale is only for our cooked shrimp.

I wish it was wild shrimp. I don't buy farm raised. Too bad. Would easily pay more for wild too...

Please tell me what is RESPONSIBLY FARMED? Is it organic? Is is non-GMO? Is it all natural? Is it antibiotic free? Is the feed used for the shrimp any of the above? Just what is RESPONSIBLY FARMED? Does it simply mean the farm workers pay their bills on time? I hope this isn't just some new jargon to fool the consumer.

I am surprised that you suggest serving them for Thanksgiving. Will they still be safe to eat by then? Or are they frozen? Thanks!

Farming seafood can provide a consistent, high-quality, year-round supply of healthy and delicious protein. When it's done right, aquaculture can be environmentally friendly and can be a crucial way to supplement wild-caught fish supplies. You can read all about our strict aquaculture (farm-raised seafood) standards by clicking the link: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/aquaculture.php

If you purchase the frozen packs how long will they keep for? Was thinking to stock up for Christmas parties if they can be kept in the freezer for that long.

The bags of frozen shrimp shouldn't be kept for longer than 60 days.

This shrimp is from THAILAND. Whole Foods should be buying shrimp from the USA as should everyone who lives in the USA. Whatever happened to buying locally???

I do want to mention that the shrimp that I buy from Thailand is usually wonderful shrimp compared to many others that I've purchased.

Is it only available in 2 lb bags? Can I buy only 1 pound?

@Jennie Sorry for the confusion. You can buy whatever quantity you prefer from the thawed shrimp (up to 10 pounds) while the frozen shrimp is being sold in 2-lb bags. Thanks for helping us clarify!

I spent a lot of time on this forum composing a message on this "Amazing Shrimp Sale This Friday" blog that perfectly fell WITHIN THE POSTING GUIDELINES, about why as little people we do not care for the word "shrimp." Now it's come to our attention that the moderators want nothing to do with little people's issues. I've came back to this blog entry to read, what I expected to be many replies to my post and to post thanks for the support to the people that came out in support of my message and I find that the moderators at Whole Foods did not even approve my heartfelt and emotional message that fell WELL WITHIN THE POSTING GUIDELINES. Whole foods doesn't want our message on their forums, then I guess that they probably don't want us in their stores either. At this point I am going to spread the word about Whole Foods not caring about little people's issues and Whole Foods complete disregard for the issues we as little people have. I only hope that I can find the same quality of food elsewhere because I, as a little person, am now boycotting Whole Foods and intend to spread the word in hopes that others in my community will feel the same way. Thank you very much. Discrimination against little people is nothing less offensive than racism is and there is absolutely no place for it in today's society. We'd like to think that we've left the discrimination behind and then we run into national chains like Whole Foods that would rather just sweep us under the rug instead of standing by our side and letting us express our feelings in a perfectly polite and calm way in a forum that is perfect for our message to be spread. We may be little in size but our voices are just as loud as any normally sized person, perhaps even louder because we are, as a necessity, a tightly knit community with friends and members across the nation. And believe you me, we stand together like any group of people that you've ever seen.
