Amazing Tilapia Sale Coming January 14th

By David Pilat, January 7, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by David Pilat
I’m often asked what makes Whole Foods Market’s farm-raised seafood so different and it’s a question I love to answer. The difference is that we know exactly where our farmed seafood comes from. We know where it swam and we know what it was fed...and more importantly, what it wasn't fed! We have the strictest standards in the industry for farmed seafood and only Whole Foods Market’s standards prohibit added hormones for farm-raised tilapia. All the more reason you’ll want to mark your calendars for January 14th for our first-ever, one-day sale on responsibly-farmed fresh tilapia. All Whole Foods Market stores in the U.S. and Canada will feature tilapia for $4.99 per pound – that’s about a 40% savings! (The exact savings can vary a bit by store.) Whole Foods Market’s Quality Standards for Aquaculture prohibit the common industry practice of using the hormone methyl testosterone to reverse the sex of tilapia. Conventional tilapia producers prefer to raise only male fish so that the fish put their energy into growth rather than reproduction and grow to a larger, more marketable size. Learn about our farmer partners and how they grow fish the old fashioned way: They let the fish reproduce naturally and then separate the males and females by hand and raise them in separate ponds. A mild and versatile fish, tilapia is one of the most popular among our customers. It’s a real family favorite, especially with children who seem to prefer the moderate and mild flavor. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal or even dressed-up for dinner guests, tilapia takes well to a variety of flavorings and cooking techniques. To help you get ready for the big sale day, here are a few of our favorite tilapia recipes: And remember, if you have questions about our farmed fish, just ask! Our fishmongers are here to help. At this amazing price, you’ll get a great buy and a delicious, responsibly farmed fresh fish. What a great way to start 2011. See you on January 14th!

Kim, unfortunately we don't offer online shopping. The only way to purchase the tilapia is at one of our stores. Thanks!

Lynn, The tilapia comes in fresh so it will freeze well. However we recommend that it not be frozen for longer than 60 days.

I missed out on sale of the grassfed beef due to not enough quantity of it. I am wondering if it is worth my time and gas coming from 40 miles away only not to find any. How early would I have to get there and will you have enough for people who come any time of the day?

I must say I have been very dissapointed in whole foods tilapia. (I am a BIG fan of whole foods which is why I feel I must address this because the food and staff is always exceptional in my experience and I really want them to stay that way) The past two times I have bought the tilapia it was bad. Not a little old or anything, BAD. Granted they always give me the credit, but why is this happening? I am a chef, I know what bad fish is and I am not exaggerating, so a little investigation into what is going on might be in order. Guesses: maybe when the new fish are recycled in a stray is left which sours the batch? I dont know of course but I have stopped buying there because its incovenient to say the least to change your dinner plan after you get home and find spoiled fish in your shopping bag. Lets take care of this so we can enjoy your tilapia!!!

I'm interested in Tonya's ? as to whether there is a limit per customer on this Friday deal. A friend told me that one of your cashiers mentioned that the super pre-holiday butter sale sold out early because some customers were buying as much as $ 70 worth of butter. Many stores impose reasonable limits on their best offers. Think about it, please.

Hello - I was told in 2004 that Tilapia males were injected with a growth hormone because they were too small and the female's were significantly larger than the males. Is it now safe to purchase male Tilapia? Betty
