Cherries on Sale This Friday Only

By Jennifer Cheng, July 11, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng

Our 3rd annual Cherry Fest is in full swing around here! We love celebrating all things cherry, especially when they’re at their seasonal sweetest. You too can join in on our cheery cherry festivities by picking up cherries for $1.99 a pound when they go on sale this Friday. (They’re on sale for one day only, so make sure you stop in on Friday, July 13th to catch this deal!) Sale valid in our US and Canadian stores, while supplies last. Availability and limits may vary by region, so you can contact your store for details. Most of our stores do not provide rain checks for sales like this. How do you pick the best cherries? Here are some tips that we like to follow when we choose them for you:

  • Check the stems — fresh cherries have green stems
  • Give them a feel — cherries should be firm, no soft spots or bruising
  • Look for the good color — depending on variety, ideally they should be deep, bright red to mahogany
  • Give them the once over — fruit should be free of insect damage and pitting (little indentations caused by dehydration)
  • Give them a taste — be sure the amount of sugar in the fruit is high

If you love cherries like I do and just can’t get enough, check out these recipes to plan a meal featuring cherries in every dish — perfect for a cherry-themed summer dinner party! (Read more about my summer dinner parties here.)

Extra sweets: For a no-heat dessert treat, try this No-Cook Cherry Vanilla Pudding with Lemon Wafers. And we would be completely remiss if we didn’t mention a classic cherry pie! We can’t get enough sweet cherry goodness! What will you do with your cherries from this Friday’s sale?

Last year in early July Whole Foods had ORGANIC cherries on sale for $2.99 for one day only. There will be no such sale this year? How much are the organic cherries?

Doesn't promoting conventional food on the "dirty dozen" go against what Whole Foods is supposed to stand for? I hope Whole Foods notices how many of us are only going to be buying organic cherries, and begins to support the organic growers instead.

I'm disappointed that the organic cherries aren't on sale too. Cherries are heavily sprayed. A few weeks ago, when the organic blueberries were on sale, I bought a whole bunch of them.

Good News Derek, Cherries are no longer on the Dirty Dozen List. EWG submitted their latest press release on June 19, 2012 and cherries are now #14 :) http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/press/

Whole Foods MUST include the organic or conventional designations in the sale notices...after-all WHOLE FOODS is the go-to place for ORGANIC FOOD in my area and many other areas. Even though many of the products in the store are not organic.

Disappointed this is not for organic cherries. People are sacrificing real health concerns for budget. Sad.

as per this site, you don't need to necessarily buy organic cherries... http://yumkid.com/what-produce-to-buy-organic-in-2011 i think they phased out some of the pesticides used with cherries several years ago. I buy organic whenever possible but this is a great deal on cherries (whole foods does usually have good tasting produce! ) :-)

I too would like to see more organic options. Went to store to buy, but when I realized the cherries were not organic I left without making a purchase. I could get same conventional product from multiple stores for same or better price. But, I would not buy conventional from anyone because of pesticide concerns.
