Confectious Candies and Confections

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Dark chocolate pretzel balls, yogurt cherries and milk chocolate graham crackers … my sweet dreams are made of these. Growing up in a house where sweets were limited, I became a bit obsessed with them.

At age seven, my cousin and I started a candy club in a decorated cardboard box. (All candy welcome. No siblings allowed!) While I’ve since refined my candy preferences, my enjoyment of confections remains strong.

Do you have a sweet tooth too? Whether you’re a traditionalist and prefer milk chocolate malted milk balls or you’d rather go wild with dark chocolate goji berries, try the Confectious® line of confections, found only at Whole Foods Market®. Finding sweet treats that meet our quality standards — no artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives or hydrogenated fats – and that also taste great can be a bit of a challenge.

But our grocery buyers work hand in hand with the team at Garvey Nut & Candy to develop Confectious confections that meet our standards and yours. Garvey Nut & Candy provides us with more types of dark chocolates, milk chocolates, gummy candies and yogurt-covered sweets than you can shake a chocolate-covered banana chip at.

Not only do we like Garvey Nut & Candy’s products, we also really like Steve Corri, one of the faces behind the label.

We recently chatted with Steve and this is what he had to say about his start in confections, his relationship with Whole Foods Market and our line of Confectious candies:

From notes to nuts

I wanted to go to music school, but my father encouraged me to sell bee pollen. I eventually sold nuts and seeds to markets and it all grew from there. I worked out of my truck, day in and day out, delivering items to small mom and pops that today are household names like Health Valley.

Giving, giving, giving

“Whatever you want, I can do for you.” I’ve been saying that for years. That’s how we’ve grown as a company. That’s how we provide 150 jobs in our community. That’s also how my family has been able to adopt an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico.

People who know people

Our relationship with Whole Foods Market came about how everything comes about in life. Someone on our team knew some people who knew some people. We had some products that fit their needs. It grew from there.

Ingredients for excellence and excitement

New items are coming. Chocolate almonds, chocolate peanut butter bananas, and get this — all natural Jordan Almonds. No one can do those! But with these incredible ingredients we’re sourcing, they’ll be the best candies you’ve ever have. Creating the Confectious recipes for Whole Foods Market got me excited again after all these years in the business. I’m excited about hunting for and creating products Whole Foods Market can sell to their customers – candies their customers might have been missing and candies they can feel okay about eating.

Steve’s persistence, dedication and energy are just three of the reasons we wanted you to meet him. The other reasons are waiting for you on our shelves.

Whether you’re looking to fill Easter baskets or simply satisfy your sweet tooth, find dark chocolate almonds to gummy bears to milk chocolate almond toffee from Steve, and his extended family of 150 co-workers, on our shelves under the name Confectious. If you haven’t tried them yet, you’re in for a treat.

My seven-year old self says, “What are you waiting for? Join the club!” My (cough cough)-year old self says, “Listen to the kid.”

Which Confectious candies have you tried or do you want to try?

LOVE the dark chocolate pretzel balls! I am lactose intolerant and these are the first dairy-free candies that don't taste dairy-free. Whatever you do, do not discontinue these treats!

Loved the milk chocolate malted milk balls but could not find them recently in the Cupertino store ... only the dark chocolate, which don't live up to my childhood memories. Hope the milk chocolate are coming back!

We were so excited when we found the peppermint patties because they are dairy free, corn syrup free and delicious! I was just told at my local Whole Foods store that they won't be carrying them anymore. Please don't discontinue the only peppermint patties we can eat!

Why don't you make the chocolate peanut butter banana chips in DARK? I wanted to get these for my boyfriend and they only had milk. He likes them, but I wanted to show how much I pay attention! :) Plus dark is healthier and yummier.

Is it just me? I tried the Confectious Milk Chocolate Banana Chips and spit them out, they were such a disappointment. So much strange, cheap cocoa-tasting soft chocolate covering thin, hard, flavorless banana crisps. Shockingly bad whole foods, I love nearly everything I try there. I'd like a refund for the full box sitting here!

The product looked terrible on the shelves, but I decided to give it a chance because I love candy and am a loyal Whole Foods customer. I bought the milk chocolate banana chips and milk chocolate peanuts. Both were horrible! I much prefer the chocolate covered sea salt caramels and mini graham crackers. Tastes much fresher and better! Please make the Confectious candies the same way the other Whole Foods chocolates and candies are made!

Whole Foods is better than this. The prices are too high and the product isn't even any good. I bought 3 different products because everything from Whole Foods is always good. These confections did not meet my expectations and will make me look elsewhere to satisfy my sweet tooth.

Did you stop carrying the Confections gummy fish? I can't find them at the Whole Foods store in Brentwood. If so, why?

I love, love, love Confectious! I'm so glad Whole Foods has these treats in tubs just like some other markets. They are convenient for having on hand for gatherings and parties. My top faves: Chocolate Almonds-wow, Gummy Cola Bottles-natural :), Sunflower Seeds in great natural colors good for kids and the Almond Toffee Crunch! Keep it up Whole Foods!!

I agree with Jerry. I tried the confectious dark almonds and was extremely disappointed. For the price I paid per lb, I should have received much better quality. Roxanne - the cola bottles were ok. This is the same candy you can buy in bags at any convenience store. The chocolate covered products are much better at Trader Joe's -- I will go to Trader Joe's for my chocolate candies from now on and I recommend that others do the same.

The Confectious Organic Mini Candy Canes we had this Christmas were absolutely yummy without any of the artificial coloring or flavoring that we usually find in the candy canes from our local supermarket or x-mart stores. My kids even think they taste better. Will definitely look for them again next year (in both the mini and full size canes).

I like the idea of yogurt covered cherries, but find the yogurt coating to be extremely sweet. I think they will be better if the sugar was toned down.

Hi, I recently bought confectious dark chocolate cranberries, and they were delicious, I went to go buy more today at my local whole foods store(coral springs,FL) and they were out. I asked if they were to get more in soon and they told me they did not have them and they were probably discontinued and would not be getting more. Well I was very dissapointed and want to know where else I may find these delightful candies. I would appreciate you letting me know and can I get them from you? Much Thanks Wendi Tepper

@WENDI - I checked with our Exclusive Brands team and they checked on the product and it has not been discontinued but not every store carries this flavor. Your store should still have the option to special order them. The UPC is 75683354127 and they should be able to help you out!
