Healthy Changes for Healthy Weight

By Chris Jensen, January 11, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Chris Jensen
Need help developing healthier habits? Good health—and healthy weight—are about smart decision-making. Listen in and learn about success tools for creating health through optimal nutrition in this encore presentation of our podcast interview with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, board-certified family physician, author, and co-founder and chief medical officer of Eat Right America. Let us know what steps you are taking toward healthy changes this year for a chance to win an Eat Right America bundle featuring some of their best-selling books, DVDs and assorted other special gifts: a $97 value! Simply enter a comment below by January 31st and one lucky reader will be selected at random.

The motivating reasons Dr. Fuhrman’s patients make healthy weight a priority: •Learning about the successes of others losing weight and reversing chronic disease, when all other diet methods have previously failed, triggers the desire to recommit to health. •Discovering the science, logic and theory behind high-nutrient eating to remove addictive overeating provides the drive to get started. The two biggest obstacles that stand in the way of motivation and determination to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight: •Misinformation about food and nutrition indoctrinated at an early age. •Allowing feelings and emotions to govern decision-making and food addictions to control behavior. The top habits to adopt when trying to maintain a healthy weight: •Focus on long-term health and not on immediate weight loss. •Eat enough food volume with high-nutrient foods to remove the desire to overeat. •Educate with the right information from the start. Everyone can take steps toward being healthier with this knowledge: •Our health is our greatest wealth. •We can’t escape the biological laws of cause and effect. We must recognize that we can’t buy good health; we have to earn it with healthy eating and physical fitness. •Good nutrition is not optional; it’s essential. Putting nutritional science into action allows us to take control of our health destiny.

I've been making changes to my daily diet for the past two months by eating more veggies and fruits daily and less meat. I have lost five pounds! It's amazing how weight loss happens with a small healthy change. My short term goal is to lose 8 more lbs. in a month which is when I turn 40! It's a challenge but I'm going to make it happen!

My husband and I love whole foods! 1. We are staying away from processed food. We do this by only shopping from the outer-most sections of the WF store (no inner isles for us). 2. Increasing our fruit and veggie intake beyond standard meals by eating fruit for breakfast and veggies for afternoon snacks. 3. Increasing our physical activity level by walking or taking stairs during breaks at work and walking together after meals at home. Also, we're limiting our dependence on television and finding more active forms of entertainment instead. 4. Sticking to lean proteins and low fat sources of dairy. We stock up during WF Friday sales on lean proteins like chicken and fish. Limiting our cheese consumption and using more flavorful cheeses (so we can use less and still get a ton of flavor) and sticking to the low fact yogurt and milk.

i love the huge variety of fresh and organic foods at whole foods. I recently learned how many of the things I was eating were full of preservatives and chemicals- very weird. Since eating more fresh fruits, grains & veggies, I instantly felt fuller longer and was amazed at how "not hungry" I was. Thanks Whole Foods!

I have gone back to simpler foods, and almost all homemade. Homemade yogurt daily with fruit for healthier digestion; homemade soups to control salt and to maximize veggie intake; more grains and beans. I think I have stopped obsessing over my weight and how many calories of this and that, and am growing in confidence that if I simply make better choices, my weight will begin to take care of itself. It is a bit of a challenge, but I refuse to pressure myself with deadlines and rather encourage myself with goals. blessings

My husband and I are on year three of eating as much as possible locally. Fruits and veggies has been easy, but the packaged foods were more difficult. Luckily, Whole Foods keeps bringing in foods from local establishments so this has been getting easier as well. Another thing we do is make a big pot of a meal and then separate them into exact portions. This keeps me eating healthy and in control.

I'm eating at least one piece of fruit per day! I'm still struggling with my sweet tooth, though.

I went to a whole foods the other day and I love what they have done with helping everyone get healthy while not giving up on that part of their store for exquisite cheeses and organic fine chocolates because even these are better than other chocolates processed with high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. Thanks for the changes without changing if that makes sense!

I've started a new exercise routine in October 2010 and I'm still doing pretty good. All the New Year's resoloutions' tips and goal-setting ideas are helping me to stay focus and go easy on myself when I miss a day. In regards to healthy eating; my 8 year old son is more involved with the food purchasing and cooking process. Once a week he finds a dinner recipe for us to make. Overall, we eat pretty heatlthy and we try new ways to reduce sugar and fat intake.

Instead of 3 big meals, I try to eat small meals or snacks every 2 hours -keeps me satisfied. I always carry nuts with me in case I get hungry. I particularly like a slice of whole grain bread with veggies on top which is quite filling.

This year I've come to the realization that I have to be a Healthy mother and Role model for my 2 young children. I cannot just focus on my children alone. "Do what I say and not what I do" just does not cut it. I would be interested to know what Dr.Joel Fuhrman's reccomendations would be. I would like to learn more about food and nutrition so I may make healthy choices for the Whole family. I believe that if I gleen this knowledge I would naturally loose weight. Albeit slowly but naturally and my health would improve as a bonus.

I am continuing on my journey of finally taking the weight off through sensible dieting and making exercise a priority in my life. I'm concentrating on including more fruits and vegetables in my diet, exploring cooking methods and recipes that allow me to enjoy my favorite foods without the added fat and calories, and adding more "no-meat" days to my week.

Health=Wealth is so true. we only have one body and it doesn't matter how much money you have. If you don't take care of your body it won't take care of you when you get older!!

I am trying to make at least 1 "better" choice each day. Most are small things, like cutting out a cup of coffee(normally I drink 2-4 cups per day, now only 2 max), very minimal salt use while cooking, open-faced sandwich, etc.
