Organic Strawberries on Sale Friday Only

By Anna Madrona, April 27, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Anna Madrona
Two of my favorite ways to celebrate spring are eating lots (and lots) of organic strawberries and searching out exceptional seasonal produce at value prices. Whole Foods Market is making it possible to do both this Friday. Come to your local store to stock up on luscious, ripe, organic strawberries priced at $1.99 for a whole pound. Available while supplies lasts. Our delicious sale strawberries originate in southern California, where the crop is currently at peak ripeness. Beyond taste and price, do you need a few more good reasons to indulge? Strawberries are superstars on the nutrition front. Just eight berries can provide as much Vitamin C as an orange, and you won’t have to peel anything. They are high in manganese and fiber and low in sodium. In addition, strawberries are packed with antioxidants and plant compounds that help keep cholesterol levels in healthy ranges. I’m already plotting my strategy to take advantage of delicious strawberry bounty at value prices on Friday. Shall I gorge on berries straight from the package during a morning break? Maybe I’ll serve them with goat cheese and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar for dessert at lunch, or take several pounds home to slice and freeze for use in morning smoothies. Maybe I’ll do all of the above. Over the weekend, I’ll also test a few new recipes that sound perfect for a weekend brunch, such as Spring Salad with Strawberries and Creamy Orange-Avocado Dressing, or Mixed Greens with Strawberry Vinaigrette and Edible Flowers, so that I can use up the last of my home-grown nasturtiums in a festive manner. For Sunday dinner, I’m considering Baked Salmon with Spinach and Strawberry Salsa. What recipes do you like to use when you come across a great deal on summer fruit? Do you have a great recipe for strawberry lemonade or a favorite no-bake strawberry pie recipe? I grow my own organic strawberries at home and this year it has been a race to harvest the ripe ones before the birds get to them. But no worries; now I can get my fill! And with berries at this price, I may just pick up an extra pound for the birds, too. Color me happy (with a berry-red stain on my lips)!

Wondering if Whole Foods is planning to serve the Saratoga, NY area. There is nothing in the area that comes close to your quality. Price Chopper and Hanaford don't come close to your service.

Oh yum! What a wonderful gift of spring! Of course, the very best is strawberry shortcake, including fresh sliced strawberries with only the barest minimum of sugar necessary, homemade shortcake biscuits (made with at least part whole wheat flour) and a nice dab of real whipped cream. A second favorite, discovered just recently, is mango sorbet topped with fresh sliced strawberries and a touch of whipped cream. And then there's the strawberry/rhubarb combination.........

Strawberry lemonade- Combine 1/2C sugar and 1C water in a small saucepan. Heat until sugar is dissolved, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Meanwhile, place 2C strawberries, 3C water, 1C sugar, and 1C lemon juice in a blender. Process until desired consistency. Pour into a pitcher and add sugar water from saucepan. I like to add a few slices of lemon and a few slices of strawberries. Chill.

Where were these berries grown - the country of origin? Please, Whole Foods should identify the country of origin in its advertisements.

Last Saturday I heard a different kind of recipe for strawberries, especially if they are a little past their peak: cut tops off flat, roll them in plain sugar (or vanilla sugar or cardamom sugar), put them flat side down on a baking sheet and roast at 400 degrees for 7 or 8 minutes, or until they are hot and soften up. I didn't get to taste them but they smelled divine, piled on shortbread biscuits. Think they would be great alone or on ice cream, too.

Thank you for making organic produce affordable to show others that it is not only the right choice but can be cheaper than buying non-organic at other supermarkets! Can't wait to make lots of strawberry recipes this weekend and put a few away in the freezer!

Have these been checked for radiation, or were they grown in greenhouses? California received considerable fallout from Fukushima. We're not buying any produce from California now.

unfortunately, at my local store they are only offering organic strawberries grown in Mexico. I will wait for the organic grown in USA or my local farm. I'm sure I'll pay more, but it's worth it to me. :(

There's a great way to increase the sweetness of non-Oregon strawberries. Just take a straw and, starting at the pointed tip of the berry, stick it through the berry, pushing out the hull and leaves and the white center portion, which is not sweet. Then slice and use just the slightest bit of sugar (or other sweetener) and a tad bit of lemon juice and toss. Great over light ice cream, yogurt, or all alone!

Whole Foods hits a homerun with this one! It's the sale I've been waiting for: strawberries that are both ORGANIC and AFFORDABLE! Looks like it's "smoothie-blending" season again! Let's do it, people! Blend-up with some strawberries from Whole Foods!
