Responsibly Farmed Sweet White Shrimp on Sale This Friday

By Jennifer Cheng, March 19, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng

Is it warming up yet where you live?

Spring is definitely on its way here in Texas, and with it comes a renewed craving for simple, fresh flavors — like shrimp!

Whether you prefer shrimp on the grill, in shrimp cocktail or in a savory tomato-based cioppino, make sure you stop by your local US or Canadian store this Friday, March 23rd, to pick up some raw, shell-on sweet white shrimp for $5.99 per pound.

Shrimp will be available frozen and thawed. Availability and limits may vary by region, so you can contact your store for details. While supplies last. Most of our stores do not provide rain checks for sales like this.

Tender and sweet, these responsibly farmed 31/35 count white shrimp were raised according to our Aquaculture Quality Standards with a third-party verification process and flash-frozen within hours of harvest. When you stock up on shrimp from this Friday’s sale, you can enjoy delicious shrimp knowing that it’s sourced from environmentally responsible aquaculture farms.

Our seafood buyers have traveled to shrimp farms around the world to find producers who meet our strict standards for protecting the environment. From protecting sensitive ecosystems like mangrove forests to maintaining good water quality, our farmer partners are working hard to be the leaders in environmentally responsible aquaculture.

We track our farm-raised shrimp from pond to processing to stores to make sure it comes from approved farms. To maintain the delicious flavor of shrimp and nothing else, ours are flash frozen within hours of harvest — without preservatives. Some competitors may sell farmed shrimp cheaper, but it’s likely chemically treated.

Make sure you look for the Responsibly Farmed label that indicates the shrimp has been farmed according to our strict Aquaculture Standards and third-party audited to ensure that the standards are being met.

Here are some tasty shrimp recipes that are full of spring flavors:

Are you craving shrimp for spring too?

Remember, our sale is one day only, so don’t forget to stop by our stores in the US and Canada this Friday, March 23rd, to pick up some raw, shell-on sweet white shrimp for $5.99 per pound!

I used to know my source for US shrimp was whole foods but I have noticed lately that is not so. I don't mind farmed shrimp but I try to buy local as much as possible. It is interesting that no where in that article does it name the location of the aqua farms. Whole foods markets is changing and not always for the better.

@Terrie The post does not name the location of the aqua farms because many different farms supply our many different stores. As mentioned, please reach out to your store to learn where your shrimp come from.

@Gerry For peak quality, 3 to 6 months is a good bet, but longer can be safe. You can learn more on freezing and thawing at these links. http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/freeze/shrimp.html http://www.fsis.usda.gov/fact_sheets/Focus_On_Freezing/index.asp http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Big_Thaw/

Whole Foods farmed raised shrimp are from Thailand. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of Whole Foods partners for sustainable fishing, Thailand is known to use better farming methods then most countries with recirculating larger tanks.

As much as I would like to buy local US farmed shrimp, unfortunately it's not sustainable. I work at an aquarium and live in a fishing town, but I make sure I get farmed shrimp from Thailand since they have made strides sustainably. Unfortunately, US shrimping is not sustainable since they get tons of by catch in their nets such as sea turtles.

Is says farmed in Ecuador. Buying fish is so scary. I love it, but I never feel good about eating it (especially now, while I'm pregnant).

@FishMongerShawn This information is inaccurate. At this time we do not source from farms that use recirculating tanks.

Question: Do the standards address the wellbeing of the shrimp and fish during their lives? They feel pain and suffering like other animals. Thanks.
