By Theo Weening, August 27, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Theo Weening
This is it, folks. The big news I've been promising you. All of our U.S. stores will help shoppers celebrate Labor Day by offering ground grass-fed beef at a sale price of just $3.99 per pound on September 3rd only. This is the perfect way to try out grass-fed beef if you haven't yet; and if you have, a perfect opportunity to stock up! Here's what I think are the most important aspects of grass-fed beef:
  • Grass-fed beef ranching is not only good for the animals, but involves managing natural resources and supporting local producers.
  • Grass-fed beef is a leaner choice and has a more favorable ratio of omega fatty acids.
  • Grass-fed beef is priced fairly for the producer and is worth every penny.
  • Grass-fed beef is a delicious alternative to grain-fed beef and cooks a little differently.
We've got more details on all of those aspects on our Grass-fed Beef page and you can read about our Grass-fed Rancher Partners and find out who supplies the grass-fed beef that you buy in your local Whole Foods Market. Very cool. Grill up some unique burgers befitting flavorful grass-fed beef: Don't forget to mark the date! September 3rd - One Day ONLY - $3.99 per Pound of Ground Grass-fed Beef. Let's fire up the grill and cook some beef!

This summer was all about watching our son learn how to overcome the fear of holding a frog or toad on his own. He'd want to catch and hold these little guys, and would come so close, then pull his hand back. Near the end of August he surprised us all be carrying one into the kitchen for our inspection. Bravo! His grin was priceless!

Is the grass fed beef ever raised or put in a feedlot or CAFO prior to processing?

@Jennifer Some of our grass-fed rancher partners are raising organic beef. Check our rancher page to learn more about the ranchers that supply your local store: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/grassfedbeef/ranchers.php

I love that you are offering a sale on grass fed beef to showcase it's value! I also love Whole Foods in general because of it's diverse offerings. I would love to see Grass Point Farms milk in your stores. I am a huge advocate of buying food from companies that support farmers who are humane to their animals and practice sustainable farming practices. I noticed that you have a few choices on "organic" milk in your store here in St. Louis (I'm here 4 days a week, haven't checked MN where I live on the weekends). However, I haven't seen any that states the dairy cows are grass fed. I have seen milk from Horizon Organic, and though they may pass the "certified" status from the government, I know that not all of their cows are treated well. I would just like the choice to buy milk from Dairy Farms that I trust. Thanks for allowing me to comment, Colleen Peterson, Circle Pines, MN

That's a good price for a truly prime product. Is it only the ground? I like mine wood grilled with my own charred Mesilla Valley chilis and about any kind of cheese. I doctor the mix with all sorts of secret dried herbs and spics. We no longer do the buns, rather we make 1/4 lb. burgers and lay them along a nice mixed salad with tomato and onion and whatever else inspires. We do all kinds of dressings. Please bring on the buffalo - now there is some fine chow - WF has the best that I can find.

I read that your beef is never "ever" given antibiotics. However, I didn't see the word "ever" when it comes to growth hormones. Has your beef EVER been given growth hormones? If so, when? Thank you.

Hey there, I'm going to totally dive into this sale on Friday (yay!!) but also wanted to know what percentage of fat these have. My local NYC WFs are selling 85% burger patties as well this week for 99¢ and I wanted to do a mix of regular patties and grass fed patties at a cookout on Saturday to taste the difference. Any info would be great. Thanks so much for doing this!

Just my opinion, but I don't personally feel organic is as paramount here as with grain fed beef. With the cows grazing naturally and eating grass rather than grain, I do not think they are exposed to the number of pesticides found in conventional grain-fed cows. Most of the pesticide from tradition beef is from the grains the cows eat.

I have a three questions about the grass-fed ground beef that is for sale: 1: Is it organic? 2: Are pesticides or any chemical treatments used on the grass? 3: Is the beef antibiotic and hormone free? Thanks -- Cindy Davis

Grass Fed beef is inferior beef. There are no proven facts about nutritional value. Plus it is only USDA Select - does not even make choice. Grass Fed Beef is good for ground beef only. Why pay more for something that has no relative cost to the farmer. The reason I write this I am a farmer and I use to raise grass fed beef - I am now only focusing on Grass and Grain simply because I do not like the way grass fed taste.

I agree grass fed beef is probably more important than organic. Perhaps all of the allergies people are developing is because of the changes in feed from grass to corn. I am personally allergic to corn so I am little biased about grass fed over any other grain fed animals.

@ Irene The Whole Foods Market meat quality standards do not allow the use of growth hormones in any of our meat, grass-fed or otherwise. Thanks.
