Win A Trip to Meet Our Best Butchers at Meatopia

By Elizabeth Smith, July 16, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Their talent is rare; their job is well done. For the last few months, butchers from our stores across the nation have competed to see who will make the cut and become Whole Foods Market’s 2nd annual Best Butcher.

This Saturday, 11 regional champions will converge on Denver, Portland and Washington, D.C. for national semifinals events. The Best Butcher contest is a fierce battle of craft, yield and merchandising. Only the top finisher in each semifinal competition will be rewarded with victory…and a trip to the national Best Butcher finals, September 8 at Meatopia in New York City!

Our butchers aren’t the only winners; we’ve teamed up with Thrillist to reward a lucky, meat lover with a trip for two to Meatopia (air travel, hotel, VIP treatment – you’ll be top dog). Click here or read on to find out how to enter to win.

With the national title of “Best Butcher” at stake, the three butchers that make it to the finals at Meatopia will not only will have to efficiently and accurately cut and merchandise the meat from various primals, but they’ll also have to create a new cut – a steak, chop or roast the world has never seen before. (The winner’s new cut will be on sale exclusively at Whole Foods Market starting September 15.)

Butchery is an art, and the Whole Foods Market® meat teams genuinely respect the traditions of the trade. We invest in our butchers and have trained butchers in every single store, which really sets us apart. In addition to regular training for the meat department, we offer an apprenticeship program to help new meat cutters learn the ins and outs of butchery. This competition both celebrates these highly regarded in-house butchers and puts the spotlight on butchery — a pursuit that takes a high degree of skill and years of experience to master.

We see this event as a great way to place an emphasis on where our meat comes from. It’s often easy to forget that the burger, steak or drumstick on your plate was once an animal. How was that animal raised? How was it treated? Where did it come from? What about added hormones and antibiotics? Was its growth artificially accelerated to get to market sooner and reduce feed cost? How can we use all of the animal rather than having parts go to waste? We know some people choose not to eat meat and that’s fine. But if you do, we think that the more you know about our meat, the better.

Whole Foods Market’s quality standards for meat include no antibiotics – ever, no added hormones*, and no animal byproducts in feed. All of the beef, pork and chicken sold in Whole Foods Market’s meat department comes from farms and ranches that are certified to Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system.

Love beef? Passionate about pork? Thrillistthe free daily email that sifts through the junk to find the best of what’s new in your ‘hood – and Whole Foods Market are sending a few lucky winners to New York’s Meatopia on September 8 to cheer on our top butchers at the finals, enjoy live music and dine on meat prepared by great chefs including Michael White (Marea), Michael Psilakis (Kefi), Aaron Franklin (Franklin’s BBQ) and Naomi Pomeroy (Beast). Enter to win on the Thrillist site.

Wow, you've gotten a lot of my money over the years, since I'm an organic vegan who shops at Whole Foods on a regular basis, even though I was disgusted by your promotion of "humane" meat. After reading this, and seeing what your priorities are, I will NEVER shop at Whole Foods again. New Leaf for me. Every one of my thousand-plus vegan friends on fb will be seeing this, too. Good luck with your carnage promotions. You're just another dishonest, unethical moneygrubbing corporation.

The very fact that you feel the need to moderate comments on this page says so much about you. Just another business promoting itself as ethical when you are far from it. I'm really disgusted.

Our family is vegan. I was *so* excited to find out about your Health Starts Here program with Dr. Fuhrman and Rip Esselstyn, as well as many of the products and educational materials available at your store. I truly thought I had found a company that was forward thinking and pioneering in regards to ethics, the environment and health. I'm really disappointed to hear about this contest. Celebrating, encouraging and highlighting something that is so destructive on all three of those levels is just so disappointing. You had a very large vegetarian/vegan customer base. Word of this contest is spreading like wildfire in veg communities.

Erm....for real? Wholefoods, when such an important part of your customer base is vegetarian/vegan, and health conscious why on earth would you be doing something like this? What a kick in the face. You are meant to be about health living are you not? When meat has proven time and again to be one of the worst things one can put into their bodies, this just makes no sense to me. I will no longer be shopping at Wholefoods, sorry. Sunflower Market in Vegas will have all of my custom from now on, and believe me our family proudly spends one heck of a lot on healthy vegan food.

Oh get off it veggi's and vegans. How many of you have shopped at Whole Foods and not known they have a meat counter and Fish counter??? Choice, it's all about choice. You don't have to like it and imagine this--you can walk away...it's that simple. On the subject at hand. I love porterhouse but haven't had it in about 10 or 11 years because of price. Just can't afford it. Smoked on the charcoal grill with a big chunk of Hickory...my..my..does make your mouth water. Add big portobello mushrooms and eggplant grilled with it and you have a meal.

YO guys, you the best, when I bring friends in your store, or by my self your counter looks like a work of art. there's nothing better than seeing fresh rib eyes. or NY strips with white marbling, you can almost taste them on the grill. Your lamb chops that are french style,so all you have is the heart of the loin eye, nothing says broiled lamb chops with mint jelly better than the way you them with a touch of class. My friends have been turned on to the WHOLE experience, and the butchers are a cut above the rest! Good Luck Gentlemen....

ATTTENTION VEGANS AND KAREN SELIGMAN, AND MICHAEL FELDMAN and the rest of you.. Time to GROW UP... Just Because you're vegan does not mean the rest of us have to act and think like you? Shame on you. I respect your desire to not eat meat. I respect your food choices but you have a lot of nerve attacking whole food or the meat industry or people who take pride in there work as butchers.. Because you think meats is bad we all have to stop eating it????. Because you think meat is bad we all have to make a butcher ashamed of his talents.??? have you ever tried to carve anything and do it well.. Shame on you vegans for attacking wholefoods. They are way more sensitive to vegans and animal lovers than any other chain I have ever seen. You all grand stand because you think your choices are better and you think your smarter. this holier than thou attitude is nonsense. Meat is delicious, butchering is very difficult. Stop forcing your nonsense on us. If I micro scoped your lives I will find stuff that is offensive and probably cruel . Im so sick of the vegans trying to force other people to live like them. lets look at who these people are and see what their lives are like. R E L A X leave the meat eaters alone. Im not forcing you to eat anything. GROW UP BABIES!!!!! I forgive you...

It is good to know that I have selected the cut of steaks that are a favorite among the experienced butchers. I had been a strong vegetaranian until recently when I noted I need more protein for collage. Thanks for making certain the cattles have no hormone or antibotic in them. Peace, Barbara Baker

What a disgusting competition! There is no such thing as compassionate meat. Congratulations, Whole Foods. You have just alienated a huge percentage of your clientele. As a vegetarian of 27 years, I think I will take my business elsewhere.
