World Christmas Party

By Dan Storper, November 22, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. While people around the world celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve in different ways, we all share the common desire to enjoy a festive holiday season with family and friends. After all, “‘tis the season to be jolly,” so Putumayo has assembled some of our favorite upbeat seasonal songs to get you rockin' around the Christmas tree. So get ready to deck the halls with a world Christmas party! (Read on for a chance to win a CD collection of Christmas music.) I’ve always enjoyed looking out for compelling versions of Christmas music recorded in other parts of the world and how different cultures celebrate Christmas. On a trip to New Zealand last year, I found one of my favorites, a Maori recording of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” We also asked two of our favorite international musicians, José Conde and Maria de Barros, to record new versions of “Winter Wonderland” and “Deck the Halls,” which turned out really well. And, among the many other appealing recordings, legendary Poncho Sanchez provides a Latin jazz twist to the Christmas classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” This holiday season, enjoy a fresh spin on Christmas classics in reggae, samba, ska, Cape Verdean coladeira and other musical styles while enjoying Coquito, a Puerto Rican eggnog drink — recipe included in the CD. So, what are your favorite non-traditional sounds of Christmas? Let us know by December 7th in the comment section below. One comment post will be selected at random to receive a Putumayo Christmas collection of 5 CDs: World Christmas Party, Christmas Around the World, A Jazz & Blues Christmas, New Orleans Christmas and A Family Christmas. Merry Christmas!

I'm not very familiar with non-traditional Christmas music, but for seasonal music I like Festival of Light, a Hanukkah compilation including cuts by Marc Cohn & Jane Siberry.

I love the sound of snow crunching under my feet as we take our daily walk. Soometimes people have Christmas music along with their decorations; other times we hear wind chimes gently ringing in the season.

I love hearing my 6- and 9-yr-old boys get all excited about their advent calendar and surprises this holiday season! As for music, I grew up in Guam and remember "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" sung in the Chamorro local language. I never learned the language but the song was always so pretty and Christmas-y!

I love listening to Harry Connick Jrs. version of the classics, it's my daughter's favorite and for a spunkier version, Trans Siberian Orchestra is beautiful.

It's actually virtually a non-sound: the hush of a lightly falling snow, not the howling of a major storm but the gentle tension release of quietness in the world.

I love Celtic Christmas music. But my favorite sound of Christmas is a little bird ornament that my grandfather had on his tree that when you turned it on the bird sang. It was beautiful and I miss him so much this time of year. He has been gone eighteen years.
