Wines from Chile: Our Wine Guy Picks the Best Bottles Under $20

Devon Broglie opens in a new tab, Master Sommelier and Global Beverage Buyer for Whole Foods Market, has spent thousands of hours studying, tasting and selling wine — and has traveled the world to find the best bottles. Whole Foods Market is celebrating wines from Chile this fall, all of which come from artisan producers whose wines offer exceptional quality for the price. In fact, all the bottles are under $20! If an adventure to Chile isn’t in your future, you can take a virtual tasting tour with an iconic bottle from each of the country’s lush growing areas. Let’s get started:

Odfjell Armador Sauvignon Blanc
Tasting notes: Ripe, lush grapefruit flavors mingle with herbal hints of green grass and cucumber. Subtle acidity, subtle tartness.
Devon says: "Dan Odfjell is a Norwegian who fell in love with a farm in Chile’s Casablanca Valley and bought it. He was the first to realize that sauvignon blanc could thrive there."

Errazuriz Max Reserva Chardonnay
Tasting notes: Forward aromas of fresh apples and pears are balanced by an almond nuttiness. Flavors of soft peach, apricot and sweet tangerine. Vanilla crème notes in a clean finish.
Devon says: "Errazuriz, one of Chile’s oldest and most beautiful wineries, was the first to cultivate the coastal zones of hot, dry Aconcagua Valley."

Autoritas Pinot Noir
Tasting notes: Lovely transparent ruby red. Intense aromas of cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Soft vanilla notes show a light-handed touch of oak. Fruit forward, fresh and harmonious.
Devon says: "Value alert! This one is a steal and a good example of an inexpensive, well-balanced, drinkable Pinot Noir."

Boya Pinot Noir
Tasting notes: Aromas of fresh berries and subtle floral notes jump out of the glass. Tart cranberry and raspberry flavors soften toward savory dried basil and thyme. A lovely thread of fine-grained tannins creates beautiful structure.
Devon says: "Looking for a quintessential pinot noir from Chile? This is it! Boya vineyards are only five miles from the coast — some of Chile’s closest vineyards to the ocean."

Criterion Carménère Reserva
Tasting notes: Loaded with black and red fruits, jammy, peppery, almost meaty. Touch of saltiness. Lovely concentration of spices and herbs. An authentic carménère experience.
Devon says: "As with all Criterion wines, this represents a benchmark for the varietal. The Colchagua Valley, like many in Chile, is closer to the equator than usual for winemaking, but cooling Pacific breezes create a Mediterranean climate perfect for this grape."

Mayu Carménère-Syrah
Tasting notes: A big red blend, forward, fruity, yummy. Dark, jammy richness speaks to well-oaked aging. Layers of plum, blackberry and spice linger through the vanilla-tinged finish. A crowd-pleaser!
Devon says: "The daytime heat of the arid Elqui Valley gives way to very cool nights, concentrating intense flavors, deep color and complexity in the grapes grown there."

Erasmo Red Blend
Tasting notes: Rich, ripe aromas. Black fruit and blackberry notes mix with cardamom, clove and a savory lushness. Earthy, primal rusticity. Old-world elegance—think Super Tuscan. Perfectly aged, it’s ready to drink now!
Devon says: "It's no coincidence the winery’s Italian owner chose Chile’s Maule Valley to put down his roots—the country’s best wines come from there."

De Martino Cabernet Sauvignon - Made with Organic Grapes
Tasting notes: A purity and lightness of hand shows in this elegant, structured cabernet. Ripe, lush, gorgeous. Perfectly balanced. A remarkable wine—truly over-delivers for the price.
Devon says: "De Martino’s Marcelo Retamal was recently ranked 13th in Decanter Magazine’s opens in a new tab list of the world’s 30 most influential winemakers. This wine is lights out. I would put it up against any California Cabernet at twice the price."

Casa Silva Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting notes: Aromas of ripe black fruits mingle with violet floral notes. Bold tannins, a pleasing herbal component and hints of black olive create a nice chewiness. Exceptional balance. So much to savor in each sip!
Devon says: "The Silva family planted the first vines in the Colchagua Valley all the way back in 1892. And through extensive viticultural and clonal research, they continue to invest in the valley's future."
