It’s National Cream Puff Day! Cream puffs are rich desserts that made their debut in the United States in 1880. However, the first cream puff originated in Europe sometime during the 1540's when Catherine de Medici's pastry chef created the baked puffed shells for Catherine’s husband, Henry II of France. Cream puffs are unusual pastries. Flour is added to a boiled mixture of butter and water, and then cooked at a high temperature until the mixture becomes a smooth ball of dough with a hollow center. After cream puffs are taken out of the oven, they must be cut in half or the pastry will deflate upon cooling. To celebrate National Cream Puff Day, bake some of your own divine cream puffs to enjoy. Don't forget to top them off with powdered sugar! |

How is this holiday celebrated?
It's a day to celebrate beans in every way you can think of! Most of our research shows that this day is celebrated by sending fun greeting cards and enjoying bean activities such as learning about beans. Elementary school teachers have been known to have a segment in class about beans in honor of National Bean Day. Preschoolers even get read the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" as part of class. ... Why not cook beans on this day such as bean soups, share some bean recipes or even have a bean party! I mean really, how many people have bean parties? You could be the first in your neighborhood! On bean day you could even give gifts-in-a-jar made from dry beans. In the South it's not uncommon to ask guests over for a southern bean and cornbread supper with sliced onions and tomatoes served on the side so if your from the south why not do it on National Bean Day. More and more people are celebrating this holiday each year because so many people love beans. As the popularity of this holiday gains strength, we find that bean lovers turn this day into a party day by gathering together; sharing party food and drinks- and enjoying in the fun of beans. |
Celebrate National Apricot Day! Did you know that the word "apricot" means "precious" in Latin? Apricots ripen earlier than most summer fruits, making them a precious commodity every spring.
The apricot tree emerged in China more than 4,000 years ago and eventually made its way across Asia to the Mediterranean. Centuries later, Spanish explorers introduced the apricot to the New World and planted the trees all over the west coast. Today, farmers in California’s San Joaquin Valley produce 95% of the apricots grown in the United States.
Whether you prefer them fresh, broiled, grilled, or poached, enjoy an apricot today in honor of the occasion! Happy National Apricot Day!

Today is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day! The ice cream we know and love today evolved from ancient flavored ices. As early as 3000 BC, people in China served their guests sweet juices mixed with ice or snow.
While fruity ice cream flavors are still popular today, vanilla and chocolate are the clear favorites. According to a survey conducted by the International Ice Cream Association, strawberry is the third most popular ice cream flavor, favored by 5.3% of the population.
Did you know that Dolley Madison served strawberry ice cream at President Madison’s second Inaugural Ball in 1813? Treat yourself to a delicious bowl (or two) to celebrate National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

It’s National Popcorn Day! Americans eat about 16 billion quarts of popcorn each year (about 51 quarts per person), which makes it one of the most popular snacks in the country. It is also one of the oldest.
Popcorn has been around for centuries. It is one of six main varieties of corn. (The others are pod, sweet, flour, dent, and flint.) Popcorn originated in Mexico, but eventually made its way north. In 1948, archaeologists in the state of New Mexico discovered ancient popcorn ears that were at least 5,600 years old! The Native Americans (in both North and South America) popped their corn by throwing it on hot stones over a fire.
Today, we rely heavily on microwaveable popcorn, which was introduced in the 1980s. To celebrate National Popcorn Day, make your favorite kind of popcorn and enjoy it while watching a movie with your friends!

It’s New England Clam Chowder Day! Chowders originated in fishing villages on the coast of France in the 16th century. Back then any kind of fish chowder was considered a poor man’s dish. Most recipes called for salt pork and biscuits, which were both part of a standard sailor’s ration. Today, we’ve substituted the biscuits (also known as hardtack) for salty crackers! There are many different varieties of clam chowder including New England, Manhattan, Rhode Island, Down East, and Outer Banks. New England clam chowder is made with milk or cream, and the use of tomatoes is frowned upon. In fact, in 1939 the state of Maine made it illegal to put tomatoes in clam chowder! Celebrate this great culinary tradition and enjoy a bowl of delicious chowder in honor of New England Clam Chowder Day! |

It’s National Pie Day! Pies have a long and illustrious history, but the sweet filled treats we enjoy today are a relatively recent innovation. The Greeks and Romans made some of the first pies in history. People filled pastry shells with different kinds of meat or seafood, flavored them with a variety of spices, and served them as part of the sweet course of the meal. When the Pilgrims made their voyage to the New World in the late 1600s they arrived with English pie recipes for beef, lamb, duck, or pigeon. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the first sweet pies emerged. These featured the ingredients we’re accustomed to today, and by the 1940s, pie had become the iconic American dessert. Whether you prefer apple, berry, pumpkin, or sweet potato, bake your favorite pie recipe tonight in honor of National Pie Day! |

It’s National Pistachio Day! The pistachio is a small bushy tree native to the Middle East. It produces bunches of fruit (similar to grapes) and the pistachio nut is the seed of that fruit. People use pistachios in cooking and enjoy them fresh or roasted as a snack. Pistachio ice cream with its distinctive green color is also popular. Pistachios have more antioxidants per serving than green tea. They are also an excellent source of fiber, copper, manganese, and Vitamin B6. To celebrate National Pistachio Day, enjoy a handful of delicious pistachio nuts! |
