In 2008, George Hutchings founded the Shoeman Water Projects (SWP) with the mission to collect gently used shoes and turn them into clean water for people with limited access. Whole Foods Market in Brentwood is collecting shoes from April 4, 2013 – May 4, 2013. Shoes will be donated to SWP and then sold to raise money to drill wells, repair pumps, install purification systems, and train local residents to operate and maintain pumps. Whole Foods Market is dedicated to supporting our community. On Thursday, April 18, we will donate five percent of the entire day’s sales to the Missouri Prairie Foundation (MPF). The MPF protects and restores prairie and other native grassland communities through land acquisition, management, education and, research. Community Support Day Activities:
· Prairie Plant Cordage Making with Bill Davit in the café from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
o Native Americans used prairie plants to create many useful items, from fishing nets to shoes. Learn about this ancient skill and make a bracelet to take home.
· Plein Air Artist Theresa Long will paint nature-inspired art in the café from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
· MPF volunteers will be stationed throughout the store with activities and information about prairie conservation
o Learn how you can turn your yard into a native landscape.
o Discover what foods we wouldn't have without native pollinators
