BERKELEY, Calif. (January 31, 2012) – Move over red wine and Champagne, craft beer is giving this Valentine’s Day a run for the money. Sparks are sure to fly as Whole Foods Market (@WholeFoods) and The Beer Wench (@TheBeerWench) combine forces for another hour of live beer tasting fun.

Aptly themed “Beer is for Lovers,” the virtual tasting is on February 7, from 7 to 8 p.m. EST, live on Twitter. Join Whole Foods Market and The Beer Wench as they taste through a playful quartet of palate-tantalizing beers, sure to bring out the romantic side of even the most cynical beer lover. All it takes to participate is a Twitter account and a beer in hand. To follow the conversation, use the hashtag #WFMBeer in your tweets.

For this event, four craft breweries across the country will participate to present a lineup of beers worthy of Cupid’s praise. Whether you plan on snuggling up with a loved one or celebrating with friends on Valentine’s Day, any or all of these beers will do the trick.

The featured beers include:

The Poet, New Holland Brewing Co.: The Poet has a rich, smooth malt character enveloped in tones of roast and chocolate. A soft mouth-feel brings luxurious flavors and a soothing aroma. The Poet is a seductive companion to dinner and dessert, especially beef, mushrooms and chocolate. 5.2 percent abv.

Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA, Flying Dog: In the words of Gonzo artist Ralph Steadman, Raging Bitch is “two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle.” With fruity funk and hop bite, it is big, bold, beautiful, and complex, just like a Raging Bitch should be. 8.3 percent abv.

Chocolate Stout, Bison Brewing: Often referred to as Barry White’s voice in a bottle, Bison’s Chocolate Stout is a dark, slow-pouring aphrodisiac of the smoothest proportions; rich roast, slightly bitter, but oh so luscious. 100 percent certified organic. 5 percent abv.

Total Domination, Ninkasi Brewing: Multiple hops collide in balanced perfection, dominating the senses, achieving total satisfaction. From the Pacific Northwest, birthplace of the modern IPA, comes a beer whose name says it all. 6.7 percent abv.

Every fifteen minutes, the focus will shift to a different brewery as brewmasters actively answer questions and share stories about the beers and the breweries. The February 7 “Beer is for Lovers” Twitter Tasting schedule is:

7 p.m. EST: New Holland (@newhollandbrew) “The Poet”
7:15 p.m. EST: Flying Dog (@flyingdog) “Raging Bitch”
8 p.m. EST: After-party (free for all!)

In addition to tasting via Twitter, Whole Foods Market will be streaming the tasting live, with The Beer Wench, from its Coddingtown store in Santa Rosa, CA. All are welcome to join the event in person or watch it live on the Whole Foods Market LiveStream channel (livestream.com/wholefoods).

AUSTIN, TX (January 19, 2012) – Whole Foods Market Team Members once again named the company to FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. The nation’s leading natural and organic supermarket was ranked No. 32, and is one of only 13 companies that have made the list every year since its inception in 1998.

“Our Team Members are the heart and soul of this company: that’s our not-so-secret sauce,” said Walter Robb, Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market. “Our more than 65,000 talented Team Members put us on this list, and we appreciate each and every one of them for their dedication to our company’s mission. They are empowered, bold, and passionate and they make great things happen for our customers, communities, supplier partners, investors, environment, and themselves each and every day.”

FORTUNE cited one of the reasons Whole Foods Market again made the list is its equitable pay structure, noting that the company caps salaries of executives at 19 times the average full-time salary.

Whole Foods Market was listed as No. 16 on FORTUNE’s “Most Diverse” list, with a workforce made up of 44 percent women and 43 percent minorities, and made the “Best Perks” list for offering gym membership discounts, compressed workweeks, and gay-friendly policies and benefits. Whole Foods Market was also included on a list of companies with the best health care benefits, for offering Team Members 100 percent paid health care premiums. The company was No. 5 on the list of top-10 companies for job growth, citing 2,699 new employees in the past year, and was among those listed for “Big Pay: Annual Salaries.” It also ranks eighth out of 38 larger companies on the list.

The list and related stories appear in the Feb. 6 issue of FORTUNE, which will be available on newsstands on Jan. 23 and at www.fortune.com.

In the past 15 years, Whole Foods Market has earned the following rankings on the list:

About Whole Foods Market®

Founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods Market (wholefoodsmarket.com, NASDAQ: WFM), is the leading natural and organic food retailer. As America’s first national certified organic grocer, Whole Foods Market was named “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store” by Health magazine. The company’s motto, “Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet”™ captures its mission to ensure customer satisfaction and health, Team Member excellence and happiness, enhanced shareholder value, community support and environmental improvement. Thanks to the company’s more than 65,000 Team Members, Whole Foods Market has been ranked as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America by FORTUNE magazine for 15 consecutive years. In fiscal year 2011, the company had sales of more than $10 billion and currently has 317 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

About the Survey

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year’s survey. More than 246,000 employees at those companies responded to a survey created by the institute, a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries around the world. Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. After evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees’ faith in management, we may exclude it from the list. Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible. For information on how to apply, visit www.greatplacetowork.com.

Natural and organic grocer is only national retailer to carry first NSA wines from Italy and Spain

AUSTIN, TX (January 10, 2012) – This year, America sipped past France to become the largest wine-consuming nation, as wine enthusiasts are increasingly embracing a lifestyle with wine and food. At Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM), shoppers are not only trying new varieties, but they are also increasingly turning to organic wines with no sulfites added (NSA). To meet this demand, the company is expanding its offerings and is now the only national retailer to carry the first USDA Certified Organic NSA wines from Italy and Spain.

Whole Foods Market now carries wines from Bodegas Iranzo, Spain’s oldest estate-bottled winery, and La Cantina Pizzolato, Italy’s top-selling organic winery. Specifically, Whole Foods Market stocks Spartico Organic Tempranillo from Bodegas Iranzo, and La Cantina Pizzolato Organic Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Rosso Convento, all priced under $13.

“We are thrilled to add these quality Italian and Spanish wines to our line-up of domestic organic wines, providing shoppers with the best selection of organic NSA wines available at a retail supermarket,” said Geof Ryan, national wine buyer for Whole Foods Market. “We see more and more interest in these wines from wine enthusiasts who believe NSA wines provide the most pure expression of the grape and from those who have sulfite sensitivities or allergies.”

Depending on the store, approximately 10 to 20 wines of the wines on Whole Foods Market shelves are organic NSA wines. Domestic producers offering these wines at Whole Foods Market include Roulé Rouge from northern California, which makes a red table wine, and Frey Vineyards from Mendocino County, which produces such wines as an Organic Red, White and Rosé as well as true varietals like Organic Chardonnay and Petite Syrah.

“The quality of organic wines improves every year, and these wines from Italy and Spain are a testament to the traditional artisan winemaking craft passed on for generations,” said Ryan. Since 1994, Bodegas Iranzo has exclusively produced wine from organically grown grapes and was one of the first wine producers in Spain to be USDA National Organic Program-certified organic.

Tasting notes for the imported NSA wines include:

Spartico Organic Tempranillo – this fruity, medium-bodied violet black wine has smoky, salty nut aromas with sugared berry sweetness and tartness with a firm powdery tannin finish.

La Cantina Pizzolato Organic Merlot – with aromas of smoked nuts and spicy raspberries, this deep ruby red is a dry, yet fruity medium bodied wine with good balance.

La Cantina Pizzolato Organic Cabernet Sauvignon – this dry, medium-to-full bodied wine has aromas of honey-roasted pineapple and roasted green pepper, with hints of tangy cranberry notes.

La Cantina Organic Rosso Convento – a medium-bodied blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Convento has pleasant aromas of black raspberry and plums, with baked apple and spice notes, with a toasty cedar finish.

Wine labeled as “organic wine” must be made from organically grown grapes and cannot have any added sulfites. The wine may have naturally occurring sulfites, but the total sulfite level must be less than 10 parts per million. Wines with added sulfites that total more than 10 parts per million must include the statement “contains sulfites.” Wines labeled as “made from organically grown grapes” may have added sulfites.

BERKELEY, Calif. (December 14, 2011) – Whole Foods Market (@WholeFoods) has teamed up with social media maven and craft beer evangelist, The Beer Wench (@TheBeerWench), on a series of virtual beer tastings to be hosted live on Twitter.

The first tasting in the series is scheduled for Tuesday, December 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. EST. In honor of the holiday, holiday and winter ales are the theme. All it takes to participate is a Twitter account and a seasonal winter brew to taste. To join the conversation, attach the hashtag #WFMBeer to tweets during the event.

“Whole Foods Market is one of the best brands on Twitter, and they do an amazing job connecting with and engaging their audience. Every week, they host really fun discussions about food and wine with their followers,” said Ashley Routson, beer expert and founder of DrinkWithTheWench.com. “For selfish reasons, I felt that craft beer deserved to be thrown into the mix.”

Whole Foods Market and The Beer Wench are joining forces with four craft breweries across the country, all with delicious holiday or winter beers available at various Whole Foods Market stores. Every fifteen minutes, the focus will shift to a different featured brewery as brewmasters actively answer questions and share stories about the beers and the breweries.

Whole Foods Market’s store beer buyers are some of the most passionate people in our company, and our shoppers tend to seek us out for our adventurous selection of local and craft brews,” said Michael Bepko, global online community manager at Whole Foods Market. “Taking our experts and knowledge online with The Beer Wench to connect to some new beer connoisseurs is a natural extension of the community we work hard to create in our stores.”

The December 20 craft beer Twitter Tasting schedule includes:

7 p.m. EST: New Belgium (@newbelgium) Snow Day
7:15 p.m. EST: Deschutes (@DeschutesBeer) Jubelale
7:30 p.m. EST: Bison Brewing (@bisonbrew) Gingerbread Ale
7:45 p.m. EST: Dogfish Head (@dogfishbeer) Chicory Stout
8 p.m. EST: After party (free for al!)

Participants are encouraged to tweet along while enjoying one of the craft beers listed above. If unavailable, simply choose another favorite holiday or winter craft beer. Suggestions from The Beer Wench, most of which can be found at a local Whole Foods Market, include:

21st Amendment (@21stAmendment) Fireside Chat
Anderson Valley (@avbc) Winter Solstice Ale

Reusable cup sleeves to help employ mothers and support school for special needs children in Kenya

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 16, 2011) — For less than a dollar, shoppers can fund a special needs school in Kenya, reduce waste and preserve their morning java – all at once – when they purchase a L.I.F.E. Jacket reusable cup sleeve with any Allegro Coffee beverage at Whole Foods Market.

VIDEO: See how the program is directly impacting mothers and children in Kenya

All 99 cents from every handmade canvas sleeve sold goes to nonprofit Comfort the Children International (CTC) to empower Kenyan mothers to earn a living and ensure a sound education for their children. L.I.F.E. stands for Livelihood, Invest, Future, Empower – which is what the nonprofit aims to provide for poor mothers and children in rural Kenya.

“Buying a L.I.F.E. Jacket saves so much more than your coffee,” said Zane Wilemon, founder and executive director of CTC. “Many Kenyans believe that giving birth to a child with disabilities is punishment for committing a crime, and grounds to shun a mother and child from the community. Job opportunities become scarce and there’s no place for their children in public school. Through L.I.F.E. Jacket sales, CTC is putting an end to that vicious cycle.”

In 2008, CTC founded the first school for special needs children in the Kenyan Rift Valley, where students have since learned to walk, read, write and enjoy a healthy environment with other children. As an extension of the program, CTC added a tailoring room onto the school where they are teaching mothers how to sew the coffee sleeves and paying fair wages for their work. Through the program, mothers are regaining hope and self-respect, lifting their families out of poverty and – for the first time ever – sending their children to school.

“One small, split-second choice can bring a lifetime of change for a mother and her child across the globe,” said Jeff Teter, president and general manager of Allegro Coffee Company. “We’re proud to offer shoppers this easy way to give back as they go about their daily routine.”

•	Whole Foods Market opens first store in Scotland at 9am
•	Cabinet Minister Richard Lochhead MSP attends opening to welcome Whole Foods Market
•	140 new team members keen to start providing the freshest food in town

Whole Foods Market, the world’s leading organic and natural grocery retailer, opens its first store in Scotland today, Wednesday 16th November.

The anticipation for the opening in Giffnock has reached fever pitch and the launch day is an event in itself. Following a short 9am opening ceremony where Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment will formally welcome Whole Foods Market to Scotland, Jeff Turnas, the Regional President for the UK, will open the doors to local shoppers. Accompanied by the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, the opening will be a Scottish foodie fanfare to welcome the local community.

Darren Campbell, Store Team Leader for Whole Foods Market Giffnock, said: “Finally, we can open our doors to the local community in Giffnock who have been so supportive. We are thoroughly excited to be here and our entire new group of team members can’t wait to get started.”

Whole Foods Market’s new store in Giffnock will offer a place to shop where everything will be freshly made, locally sourced, mindful of the seasons, Scottish wherever possible and beautifully displayed. No food or drink sold here has any artificial colours, preservatives, hydrogenated fats or other additives and Whole Foods Market believes that it should inspire shoppers to think differently about the food they eat and that this will change what they put on their plates.

Richard Lochhead MSP, the Cabinet Minister for Rural Affairs, said: “I am delighted to warmly welcome Whole Foods Market to Scotland and their arrival helps set a new standard for retailing.
“For a company looking to capitalise on growing consumer demand for locally produced, top quality food, they have found a natural home in Scotland. I have no doubt the opening of their first store will be the beginning of a lasting relationship with a retailer that has earned a reputation for not only sourcing local produce, but for educating shoppers on how to lead a healthier lifestyle.”

From an in-house ‘scratch’ bakery (with certified Kosher breads) to a traditional butchery counter with the finest, highest welfare 100% Scotch beef, lamb and pork via grocery shelves displaying over 400 products produced in Scotland – and a fishmongers full of fresh local catch and magnificent shellfish and a machine allowing customers to make their own peanut butter – this is clearly a departure from supermarket shopping as we have known it.

On entering the store shoppers will see a large fresh produce section with a special ‘wet wall’ that mists the shelves with tiny water jets to keep fresh fruit and vegetables at their best throughout the day. Here, alongside every fruit and vegetable that is seasonally available, 20 different varieties of mushrooms sit alongside heritage potato varieties Belle De Fontenay and Red Duke of York, grown specially for Whole Foods Market in Scotland.

Next door to produce, another unique feature is the ‘bulk’ section. Here shoppers can choose from coffee, grains, pulses and rice but only take what they need, thereby reducing waste. The ‘Giffnock blend’ coffee is locally roasted by Thomsons and 10% of sales will be donated to local causes. Another novelty is that shoppers will be able to make their own peanut or almond butter using a special nut grinding machine. Your morning toast will never be the same again. Beer and wine will be on tap-literally-with refillable stations for both.

Our traditional butchers will feature a 24ft counter that will display some of Scotland’s finest meats, expertly prepared. Our butchers will be cutting all the meat seen on the counter by hand and to order. Our beef is 100% Scotch and for flavour, comes mostly from slow-growing native breeds such as Galloway or Aberdeen Angus. A unique feature of butchery is the dry aging case. Here, customers will be able to choose from ribs of beef and steaks aged between 28 and 35 days for extra tenderness and flavour.

Every chicken sold by Whole Foods Market in the UK is free range and slow grown. All the pork and lamb are from Scottish farms and often from just one single source. There will be up to 35 different varieties of sausage available, all made without MSG or artificial fillers.

One of Whole Foods Market’s core values is to offer shoppers support and information on leading a healthier lifestyle through the food they choose. The ‘Health Starts Here’ programme features in every section of the store. Shoppers will be able to speak to our healthy eating specialist, learn about dietary alternatives, be inspired by recipe cards that change monthly or simply pick up delicious ready- to- eat foods that celebrate naturally flavourful whole foods by limiting added sodium and contain no extracted oils or refined sweeteners. Moreover, our unique ANDI scale helps customers choose the most nutrient- dense foods to take the first steps towards a revitalised and energised way of eating.

The commitment to Scottish cheeses and eggs bears out Whole Foods Market’s ability to create new shops that are completely in sync with the communities they serve. The majority of the cheeses are Scottish and include some real ‘heroes’ of farmhouse cheese making that are currently available including the Isle of Mull Cheddar, the Highland Fine Cheese company’s Black Crowdie and Devenick Dairy’s Brie. Ice cream in many flavours will be available from Thorntonhall Ice Cream and all the milk is from Scottish dairies.

Beyond food and drink, we offer all natural, organic and even vegan skin, hair and body care. The ‘Whole Body’ section specialises in products and supplements that are plant-based and use only naturally-derived ingredients including pure essential oil fragrances, gentle preservatives and non-petroleum ingredients. Our high-potency, quality dietary supplements are free from artificial colourings, flavourings, sweeteners and Irradiated herbs. It goes without saying that Whole Foods Market does not allow any animal testing on any of our personal care products. Widely-available all natural beauty brands sit alongside locally sourced smaller Scottish brands such as Live Native and Pure Lochside to offer a fantastic range under the one roof.

Baby food and supplies, ecological household products and some homewares are present and will of course, be the most natural, ethically sourced goods available.

Whole Foods Market in Giffnock will be staffed by fully trained chefs and baristas serving an extensive range of hot and cold food as well as offering a smoothie and juice bar, a 34-seat café and an extensive menu of hot drinks made using regular or specialist milks. Sushi will be made fresh by hand in-house as will local favourite Cullen Skink at the new soup station.

The ever- popular Rotisserie chicken (free range, of course) will be available by half or quarter sizes and here you will be able to choose from some vegetable sides to go with it to make up one of the new ‘Rotisserie meals’. In-house made Burritos with a wide range of fillings will be made by our chefs in front of you and a self- serve hot food bar including fish and chips, pizza and pies will help keep some of the winter cold away.

Whole Foods Market’s ‘Chefs Case’ will offer restaurant- quality food at take- out prices and the ‘Meals to go’ range will be ready to pick up for heating and eating at home when time is short. We’ve done all the hard work so you don’t have to.

Jeff Turnas, President of the UK Region said “This is a place where you can shop with your conscience intact. Whole Foods Market offers a principled, thought- provoking, great tasting, community led, social place to shop. We can’t wait to meet you in Giffnock.”
