Five money-saving tips for entertaining

1. Use lots of veggies – they are filling, affordable and the frozen varieties are perfect for easy cooking. Sprinkle with an additional ingredient such as chopped herbs or nuts to add a homemade touch.

2. Buy only what you need – utilize the Whole Foods Market “servings calculator” at www.wholefoodsmarket.com/holidays to help determine how much of each ingredient is needed per person.

3. Splurge smart – plan an overall holiday budget and choose the time and place to go all out on a special meal. Make up for the splurge by saving on other meals.

4. Beat the bar tab – instead of offering a full bar, create a custom cocktail to be your seasonal signature. Buy a unique mix such as acai juice or choose an innovative garnish such as pomegranate seeds or a gooseberry.

5. Don’t throw in the towel – even on a small budget you can still enjoy festive and decadent ingredients by watching quantities. Small tastes can often have a big impact.

Visit the elves at Whole Foods Market

If the idea of creating your own holiday meal is too daunting amid the extra hustle and bustle of the season, visit the Whole Foods Market holiday table from December 4 to December 22 to order a delicious pre-prepared feast to satisfy the masses. Simply choose your entrée, let us know your desired pick-up time and Whole Foods Market will take care of the rest. The experts are available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily to help assist with your order and answer any of your holiday meal planning questions.

Fully cooked entrée selections include: an Oven Roasted Diestel Turkey Dinner – $99.99 (Organic – $119.99), Natural Smoked Diestel Turkey Dinner – $119.99 or Spiral Cut Honey Glazed Ham Dinner – $119.99.

Each meal serves approximately eight guests and comes with fresh green beans with shallots and herbs, savory herb stuffing, country mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, dinner rolls, classic cranberry relish and traditional pumpkin pie.

Small Portland Business Becomes First Local Producer Local Program Recipient in the State.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Oct. 23, 2009 – Whole Foods Market®, a leader in natural and organic foods, today announced Portland-based Townshend’s Tea Company as the state’s first recipient of its Local Producer Loan Program.

With tea houses in Bend and Portland, Townshend’s Tea Company will receive funding for new equipment, a larger production facility and additional warehouse space in Portland, increasing the company’s production ability ten-fold.

“This is huge. We’re a small, independent company trying to make the best tea possible, and this loan makes all the difference in our continued growth,” said Matt Thomas, owner of Townshend’s Tea Company. “Since we started working with Whole Foods Market in 2008, we’ve observed time and time again how they work to support local businesses – this is just another example of how committed they are to helping Oregon companies.”

The loan from Whole Foods Market will specifically support Townshend’s line of Brew Dr. Kombucha bottled teas. Handcrafted in small batches with organic ingredients, Brew Dr. is available in four flavors: Nutritonic, Superberry, White Rose and Clear Mind.

Thomas sold his teas first into the Bend Whole Foods Market store, and now, all Oregon Whole Foods Market stores stock Townshend’s products. Eventually, the increased production capacity from the loan has the possibility to translate into wider distribution across the entire Pacific Northwest.

“Because we believe in local producers, we do as much as possible to support them. Knowing it’s not easy for small businesses to get credit these days, we encouraged Matt to apply for this loan so more people can experience Townshend’s tasty, nutritious kombucha,” said Bruce Silverman, Portland vice president for Whole Foods Market. “Whole Foods Market is constantly looking for ways to help make Oregon’s artisan producers more successful, and this was a great way to help.”

Local and independent farmers, producers and food artisans in Oregon are encouraged to apply for similar loans. Across the country, Whole Foods Market has provided more than $2.5 million in low-interest loans to local producers through the Local Producer Loan Program. Whole Foods Market launched the Local Producer Loan Program in early 2007 with a commitment to fund up to $10 million in low-interest loans. Loan recipients must meet Whole Foods Market’s quality standards, use the funds for expansion and have a viable business plan. Loans range from $1,000 to $100,000 and have fixed low-interest rates.

Southern Favorite is Clean, Fresh, and Great Value

AUSTIN, Texas. (May 4, 2009) — With a nod to one of the South’s favorite foods, Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFMI) invites shoppers around the country to enjoy one-of-a-kind catfish that not only tastes sweet and mild, but is also the only catfish raised to meet the Company’s strict aquaculture standards.

Whether they prefer it blackened in a cast iron skillet, pan-fried with a crispy cornmeal crust, or breaded and baked to perfection, shoppers can enjoy this easy-to-prepare, affordable American classic a new way every night of the week.

Carolina Classics Catfish, Whole Foods Market’s farm-partner, is the Company’s exclusive source for farm-raised channel catfish. “Whole Foods Market’s farmed catfish are fed at the pond’s surface, which makes for a clean-tasting, mild fish. There is not a trace of that muddy flavor you might remember from the catfish you caught in the river as a kid,” said Kevin McDade, Whole Foods Market’s Mid-Atlantic seafood coordinator. “Carolina Classics’ process for raising catfish means you get a high quality fish that’s fresh and affordable, and so easy and quick to prepare. They have been a true partner, helping to change the way fish is farmed.”

The North Carolina-based farm is required to meet Whole Foods Market’s strict farmed seafood standards, which happen to be the highest in the U.S. This means that the catfish must be free of antibiotics, synthetic algicides, and land-animal byproducts in feed. On top of that, the hatchery, ponds, feed mill and processing plant supplying catfish to Whole Foods Market are all managed by the same farmer, which offers complete control over the production process and traceability “from pond to plate.”

“We go to great lengths to deliver ‘clean’ catfish, which means making our own feed to ensure its quality, prohibiting the use of synthetic chemicals to kill algae in and around the ponds and managing every step of filleting,” said Joe Stofer, Carolina Classics’ director of retail sales. “Keeping a close eye on each step means we ensure our final product is produced according to Whole Foods Market’s farm standards. Since we taste-test fish from each batch before harvesting a pond to ensure it meets our desired flavor profile, we know it’s 100 percent flavorful.”

When they are raw, catfish have a firm texture that stands up to any cooking method, which makes them perfect for anyone who is new to cooking fish. Once prepared, the boneless, skinless catfish fillets have a melt-in-your-mouth quality. Throughout May, Whole Foods Market celebrates catfish by hosting in-store demonstrations to highlight seasoning and cooking tips. Whole Foods Market’s favorite new catfish recipes include Cornmeal Catfish Fingers, Quick Cajun Catfish, Sautéed Catfish with Parsley and Tomato Salad and Miso-Glazed Catfish with Bok Choy.
In December 2008, for the second time in a row, Whole Foods Market ranked No. 1 out of 20 of the nation’s largest supermarket chains on Greenpeace’s Retail Seafood Sustainability Scorecard. High standards for quality, safety, sustainability and culinary excellence have made Whole Foods Market a leader in the seafood industry.
