One beauty-junkies adventures at the WHOLE BODY FAIR…
by aventura, March 26, 2009 | Permalink
Some women collect handbags, some collect shoes, and others collect husbands.
I collect health and beauty products.
It’s true. My bathroom drawers are filled with lotions, potions, serums, body creams, mineral masks and too many cosmetics to count in colors that would make Rainbow Brite blush. My cabinets are bursting with supliments, powders, herbal tinctures and sprays. The scary part - I use them all.
I know, it’s vanity.
I’m not proud of my problem, but as far as vices go it’s not that bad - so cut me some slack.
That being said, you can imagine my excitement about our WHOLE BODY FAIR on Sunday 4/22. As a loyal customer of the Whole Body department, but a relatively new team member, I was eagerly anticipating seeing all of these product lines up close and personally!
The day started out with us handing out brightly colored goodie-bags to our first 200 customers filled (and I do mean filled) with some great products. The day prior to the event I helped our Whole Body Team Leader Eden stuff the bags so I knew we were giving away some ‘good stuff’ that people could really use.

Eden and Bono giving away goodie-bags!
Among the items we gave away were: Burt’s Bees Peppermint Foot Cream and Lemon Balm Cuticle Cream, Giovanni’s Shower Gels (and my personal favorite Chocolate Body Scrub), Avalon Hair Conditioner, numerous nutritional samples, assorted natural soaps, and 365 Veggie Chips (baked not fried!) 365 Organic Fruit Leather, and more!
After finishing my ‘bag duty’, I made a beeline to visit the numerous vendors who were set up at colorful tables with their product lines on display. (Cue: sound of choir and sunlight streaming thru the aisles). For a beauty-product junkie this was bliss!

Dr. Hauschka Skincare Products
My first stop was
Dr. Hauschka’s Skin Care line. After all, if Martha Stewart loves it, then it must ‘
be a very good thing.’
I will wholeheartedly agree. The line is fabulous, but alas - I did not score any samples as we were saving them for our customers. Sigh…
Next, I turned the corner and saw a large crowd.
Being a sheep, naturally I followed.

Lining up for Genesis Acai samples
The excitement was surrounding the GENESIS TODAY table where they were sampling liquid ACAI 100. Apparently this product has 30,000 mg of pure Acai Berry Juice in every 1 fluid ounce serving. Customers really seemd to enjoy the flavor and learning about its many health and wellness benefits.

Jay Kiss with his AMAZING GRASS
Next aisle over I encountered Jay Kiss from Amazing Grass. Initially I thought I may have already encountered some amazing grass at an 80’s Motley Crue concert, but alas - I was on the wrong track…
Pleasantly surprised by the earthy (yet quite palatable) taste of the Amazing Grass Superfood, I stayed to learn more. This product provides the most organic greens per gram of any leading brand. It is 100% vegan, provides anti-oxidant support, and enhances energy and stamina. I asked Jay if I would get any younger with it, but Jay said no. He did suggest it could help me feel younger though.
Don’t laugh. I told you I have a problem.
After my shot of Amazing Grass, I needed to get moving. Down the next aisle I encountered my 2nd favorite product of the day - VEGA from Sequel Naturals. About a year ago I was hooked on green-smoothies. On Sunday I tried this product mixed with vanilla Almond milk and it was sinfully good. Without mentioning names, it tasted just like a major chains green tea drink but without the guilt! The story behind it is very interesting as well. It was created by Ironman Triathelete Brendan Brazier after he was told he couldn’t be vegan and an indurance athlete. Long story short - we just started carrying this product in our store about a week ago and when I returned at the end of my shift to buy -it was sold out! No worries though - our Whole Body Team will special order out of stock items for you, so I’ll keep you posted once I’ve gotten started on it. I’m confidant that if it can keep a triathelete going, it should provide me enough energy to clean my house once in awhile.
After my VEGA pick-me-up, I hopped over to the RADIUS table. Have you ever seen a Radius Toothbrush? This is NOT your mama’s toothbrush.

The uber-sleek RADIUS toothbrush!
This toothbrush is so sleekly designed and modern that it should be on a wall at MOMA instead of a bathroom sink. This toothbrush is so chic that I would feel under-dressed using it while wearing my pj’s and fuzzy slippers. It is just that cool. Apparently its coolness factor comes from its 6500 bristles embedded into its super-sleek ergonomic design. I passed on this one only because I thought it would make the rest of my bathroom look even shabbier.
My absolute favorite product of the day came from a company I had never tried before, MYCHELLE Dermaceuticals. The representative Marlena patiently listened to my beauty woes and recommended a few products.

Among the suggestions she made was a mask. Tentatively I tried their Guava Cactus Mask thinking that if it didn’t work for my face I could always turn it into a cocktail. Fortunately, it worked amazingly! Not only does it smell delicious (in a very natural, smoothie sort of way) but it left my skin feeling hydrated, smoothe and very soft. Me likey.
To wrap it up, I really enjoyed the fair and believe our customers did as well. We all benefitted from being introduced to new products and learning about new supplements. Whether you are struggling in your wellness plan or well on the way to exceptional health - everyone can benefit from a visit to our Whole Body department. Even a jaded shopper like me!

Our amazing harpist played throughout the afternoon!
Heart of a Chef

On Saturday, March 21st we were fortunate enought to host Chef Kurtis Jantz, Executive Chef of Neomi’s at Trump Beach Resort. They prepared a delicious, amazingly-unique, AND heart-healthy cooking demonstration right in our cafe for customers.

Chefs Chad Galiano & Kurtis Jantz
The first dish they prepared was a Salmon Panzanella. Panzanella salads have enjoyed some prime time play for awhile, but it also raised the question of “what exactly can a panzanella be?” They chose elements such as king salmon (for it’s common place in many dishes and for its high ratings as a heart healthy protein), spinach and fresh herbs, olive oil and balsamico, Jennifer’s Homemade rosemary flatbreads (for it’s low fat and because it’s locally made), slow roasted tomatoes, sliced candied ginger, raw organic cocoa nibs, and 365 Sweet Kettle Corn.

The second dish, Venezuelan Chocolate & Olive Oil Fondue involved the use of lamb in conjunction with chocolate and fruit. They presented it as part of a broader meal as opposed to being a complete meal on its own (although technically it could be). New Zealand lamb rib loin was chosen for its tenderness and low fat. The idea of using a chocolate and olive oil fondue as a plate component highlights chocolate’s consistent placement as a heart healthy food… good for the body and spirit if not boggled down by excess fat and sugars. A mix of Venezuelan and Belgian chocolate provided the right amount of sweetness to bitterness. The fruit elements were based on what was currently available. They demonstrated that not only can fruits be utilized, but the many culinary techniques that could be applied to fruit. Asian pears were compressed with simple syrup and citric acid. Nectarines were tossed with a little olive oil, lime juice, and black pepper, dried dates, blueberries (one of the highest ranked heart healthy foods). They prompted the crowd to throw some fruit on the grill the next time they barbequed this spring which interested everyone!

This demo was a small preview of the actual Heart of a Chef Festival, a unique culinary experience scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Jungle Island from 12PM-4PM. (Obtain discounted ticket rate of $12 per person to Jungle Island with HOAC ticket!)

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Florida Heart Research Institute.
Chef Jantz’s accomplishments include “Rising Star Chef 2008 South Florida”, “Philanthropic Chef of the Year 2007″ and “Best dining experience of 2006″ by the Chaine des Rotisseurs.

On Tuesday, February 24th our customers were treated to our 3rd Annual Mardi
Gras Shopping Cart Parade & Creole Cookout!
This free event really showcased the creativity of our team members. Many worked
very hard on creating their shopping cart floats and had a blast showing them off at
our “Shopping Cart Float Parade”!

Our team members dressed in costumes, threw beads and trinkets to the customers
and followed an amazing Dixieland style band throughout the store.

Later in the day we sampled Creole specialites like Gumbo, Jambalaya, Red
Beans & Rice and Kings Cake! Our team members really knows how to let the good
times roll!
