Planting the garden in May.
Planting the garden in May.

About a month ago we planted our first “Community Garden” here at Whole Foods Market in Cary.  So far, so good- mostly everything is still alive, if not thriving, and we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from customers, visitors, team members and the geese that apparently are not flying any further north for the summer (a scarecrow is coming soon to deal with that constituency!).  If you don’t have a garden up and running yet, we still have a few bedding plants that would be perfect for a container garden and a great selection of herbs.  All of the stuff we planted is looking great in case you need convincing about the quality of our garden center plants or inspiration to plant your own.

When we originally decided to plant the garden, it was mostly to provide a more Whole Foods Market-type of landscaping, but as our plans grew, no pun intended, our intent changed as well.  Since what we have is not the traditional community garden that is cared for by members of the community, we realized this would be a good opportunity to help our friends at the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle(IFFS) with their new Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR) program.  IFFS is doing their part with the recently initiated Farm and Community Garden project that includes the PAR program, a production and teaching farm and the implementation of several community gardens in Wake County neighborhoods.  So, besides pledging the fruits (and vegetables) of our garden to IFFS/PAR, we would like to invite our customers to share their garden bounty with our neighbors in need.  We will be a drop site for anyone interested in donating produce to the PAR program.  If you are interested in donating any of your fresh produce please stay tuned for details about when you can begin dropping it off here at the store.  Until then, enjoy these pictures of our garden, or even better come by and check it out in person!
