Fava Beans are in!

Fresh Fava beans are here! Grab them while you can. Here today and gone tomorrow. Choose them tender and green.
Trim the ends and “zip” off the filament that runs the length of the pod. Break them into thirds. When Favas are young and tender, you can eat the pods too. Wash them and set aside. Chop some onion and sauté until translucent, add the Fava beans and continue to sauté for 5 minutes. Add a little water (or white wine) and cover, let simmer on low heat until cooked. Add crushed garlic, tons of chopped cilantro, salt, pepper, and lemon juice to taste. Eat with whole wheat Pita bread or over rice.
They are high in protein, iron, and fiber. A good source of C, A, and potassium. An dfinally great source of dopamine, you know , that wonderful amino acid that is a neurotransmitter in the brain, great for memory, energy, and drive. Keeps you young? …at least for a little while longer.
Star spotting and special visits
by georgetown, April 8, 2009 | Permalink
Perhaps not as exciting as Vice President Joe Biden’s surprise visit to our store on a Sunday afternoon in March, but a visit from Will Harris III, owner of White Oak Pastures, is a very special treat. Mr. Harris has a fascinating story to tell. The Harris family has raised cattle on the same Early County, Georgia farm for 5 generations. Stewardship of the land and respect for the livestock are among the most important lessons that are passed from parent to child in his family.
On Friday, April 10th from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Meat Department, we will be cooking up some delicious grass-fed beef that is sustainably and humanely produced on a 143 year-old Georgia family farm. Harris’s product is an example of what makes our meat so very different from the conventional meats on the market. You will, and can taste the difference.
As for Mr. Biden, who knows when he could grace us with his presence again. Our store is famous for star spotting: from Queen Rania of Jordan, Darrell Hannah, Mayor Fenty, George Stephanopoulos, and Redskin Andre Carter to name a few. Some of our regular customers are star chefs, Ris Lacoste and Michel Richard. We treat everyone equally with smiles, service, and going the extra mile to satisfy and delight. But somehow, Joe and Jill Biden left us a little speechless. How do you get between a dozen secret service personnel, the olive bar, and a Vice President? A few team members, were thrilled to shake the hand of our new neighbors (the VP’s residence is behind the store) and exchange some welcoming words before they were whisked away under the delighted gaze of a groups of customers gathered on the side walk, waving them good-bye.
