Fueling for the Slopes!

by highlanddrive, January 27, 2009 | Permalink

Since we are in the middle of the Utah winter season, it seems appropriate to chat about “fueling” for the slopes.  No, we’re not referring to fuel for your rig.  We are talking about fuel for your body.  We see a number of customers bundled in their snow gear in our store this time of year.  Whether you’re a skier, a boarder or a snowman maker, we can help.  Eating the right foods will go a long way in helping you keep your energy up.  Here are some fueling tips for your next snow day:

1.        Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day:  This is the meal that gets you going after all.  A doughnut is not what we’re talking about.  Think filling and sustaining.  Think high fiber – whole grain breads, whole grain cereals and oatmeal, eggs and beans – just to name a few.  The options are many at Whole Foods Market with our breakfast burritos in the deli, whole grain breads in the bakery and cereal and oatmeal in the grocery aisles.  Keep your meal low in sugar and high in fiber and you’re on your way to breakfast stardom.

2.       Choose your snacks wisely:  Even though a good breakfast will stay with you, chances are you’ll be on the hill for awhile.  Sometimes snacking gets a bad rap, but proper snacking is a great way to avoid bingeing at your next meal.  Choose snacks that will fill you up and won’t drag you down.  Think dried fruits, nuts, trail mix, whole grain crackers and pretzels.  Many of these are found in our bulk bins, making it easy to measure out exactly what you need.

3.       Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:  It’s easy to get dehydrated in the winter because many of us tend to associate thirst with sun and sweat.  Don’t be fooled though.  Even when it’s 15 degrees on the slope, your body needs the agua!  Whole Foods Market offers a number of bottled waters as well as energy drinks that can help replenish your electrolytes while getting you your H2O.

Thanks to the courage of your company CEO who spoke out against the health care reform you have a new customer. And I will email the article I read about him to everyone on my email lists.
