Natural Cold Remedies and Comfort Foods
by jenkintown, July 13, 2009 | Permalink
When my toddler comes down with a pesky cold (stuffed nose, sore throat, sneezing, coughing) I’m always ways to make her feel better. We use Sambucus for Kids and her Udo’s Infant Probiotics to help boost her immune system. She usually just wants to eat soup, ice cream, and pudding! We us young coconut water to keep up her hydration. Are there any favorite natural cold remedies that you take when you’re feeling under the weather? What type of comfort foods make you and your family feel better when you’re not feeling your best?

Dry toast feels good on a scratchy throat. Pickles may sting (or maybe not) but, due to the vinegar, are helpful. Citrus juices are a great way to stay hydrated and up vitamin C at the same time (I know in some circles the jury is still out on vit C but it can’t hurt). Especially easy to get into a kid if you freeze it into popsicles. Sub these (or sorbet if you have to) for the ice cream as dairy products tend to thicken mucus and can actually make you stuffier. Also, I’ve been giving my pre-schooler luke-warm peppermint tea with honey and lemon (ginger is safe too, as far as I know, but double check that). I know they make eucalyptus bubble bath but I can’t think of the name of the stuff…they do carry it at whole foods markets, I do believe. This is nice for little ones. Hot showers are nice for big ones. I usually drip just a few drops onto the bottom of the shower of eucalyptus or peppermint oil. Hope these help, though I’m sure you are over your colds by now (if not that is a very long cold and I might go see a doc.).

I just found another remedy that people have raved about. It’s a line of mushroom based products by New Chapter. There’s a lot of talk about using mushrooms to boost immunity so I’m trying these out to see how things go.
