Meet Your Food - Local Food & Farm Tours!

by millvalley, August 25, 2009 | Permalink

Whole Foods Market invites you to meet your food! Join us for a tour of some of our favorite local vendors – a special behind-the-scenes tour for Whole Foods shoppers!

9/4 Friday

Rubicon Bakery

11am, Oakland

Rubicon provides some of the fantastic cakes we sell in the bakery – like the wheat-free La Bête Noir and the classic chocolate cake.  Rubicon stands for more than fabulous desserts: they are part of a nonprofit organization, Rubicon Programs, that helps individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area overcome economic and social hurdles.  Rubicon provides training, housing, employment and support services to people in need. Learn more about this bakery that helps the community flourish – and taste some fantastic cakes!

9/9 Wednesday

Neve Roses

11am, Petaluma

Join us on September 9 – we promise you a rose garden! Chris from Neve will give us a tour and show us where those beautiful local roses in our floral department come from. Afterwards, we will enjoy refreshments from Whole Foods Market – a good excuse to linger a bit and take some time to smell the roses!

9/11 Friday

Frog Hollow Farm

10am, Brentwood

Frog Hollow stone fruits are legendary in the produce departments at Whole Foods Markets. Wearing his signature overalls, surrounded by boxes of his legendary fruit, “Farmer Al” Courchesne has been a welcome sight at farmers’ markets around the Bay Area for over 30 years. Join us for a tour of Frog Hollow at the height of peach season!

9/12 Saturday

Marshall’s Honey

10am, American Canyon

Marshall’s Honey is a staple with Whole Foods shoppers in the Bay Area. Their fine honeys are gathered from the mountains, valleys, seacoasts and back yards of the San Francisco Bay Area. Come learn more about honey and how this quality product is gathered.

9/16 Wednesday

Quetzal Farms

3pm, Santa Rosa

Kevin McEnnis started the farm in Santa Rosa in 1999, giving it the name of the national bird of Guatemala, where he planted his first garden. Quetzal Farm (pronounced ket-sall) produces organic vegetables and fruit on seventeen acres in Santa Rosa and Occidental, California. Quetzal specializes in dry farmed tomatoes – a real treat. Join us to learn about this productive small farm and the magic of dry-farming.

9/21 Monday

Upper Crust

2pm, San Rafael

Christine of Upper Crust says “My love for pie making began as a young girl growing up in the Pacific Northwest, where I picked wild berries and made pies for my family and neighbors. The pleasure from making fresh handmade pies, lovingly from scratch, still endures to this day.” No wonder Christine’s pies are so popular with Whole Foods shoppers. Join us for a tour of the pie bakery in San Rafael. Afterwards, we will enjoy pies and a fresh coffee tasting with Weaver’s Coffee from Emeryville.

9/29 Tuesday

Marin French Cheese

10:30am, Petaluma

Marin French has produced hand-crafted Artisan soft-ripened cheese since 1865! Wondering who makes those fantastic triple crème brie and Camembert in our Speciality departments? That’s the work of Marin French. Join us to watch the cheese-making process and (of course!) sample some very special cheeses.

Smart Shopping at Whole Foods

by millvalley, August 19, 2009 | Permalink

Kevin, the receiving clerk at Whole Foods Mill Valley has been enjoying a great new tool on wholefoodsmarket.com - the electronic shopping list. Here’s his feedback…

I recently found a useful tool for both employees and customers on our website, wholefoodsmarket.com. It’s an electronic shopping list with many useful features. It allows you to add products from our website’s database, as well as products unique to the Whole Foods in your own neighborhood. Also, it has an option to temporarily remove a staple item from your list that you don’t need, and then re-add it with a click when you run out. Also, for iphone and blackberry users, you can send the list to your smart phone and really be “green” by eliminating the paper from the shopping list process. While the list is far from perfect, it does allow someone like me to take a step in the right direction.

After reviewing my credit card statement and seeing how much money I’m spending on “impulse buy” foods, I decided to become a smart shopper. My goal now is to take lunch to work, as opposed to buying everything prepared, and stock up on frozen items and pantry items, so I always have something to eat in the house. I also review our Weekly Specials flyer for coupons and then browse the aisles BEFORE I shop to take notes on Weekly Specials and Great Buy items. My goal now is to spend approximately $100 for 2 weeks. As you can see from my shopping list, after my employee discount (20%). I spent about $106 and have more then enough food for 2 weeks.  Shopping smart is all about awareness of what you’re putting in your basket. Take control and don’t let your stomach empty your wallet. Enjoy!
