Great deals this week

by raleigh, June 5, 2009 | Permalink

As the summer madness continues, there are also some other items that are on sale that are worth checking out.

One of my favorite products in the store is Rachel’s Yogurts. These are not just your ordinary yogurts, they are wickedly delicious. I can personally vouch for that. How can you resist flavors such as plum honey lavender, vanilla chai, pomegranate blueberry, or mango pineapple passionfruit? Every one of the flavors in this line are extraordinary and will excite your taste buds. It is a little hard to go back to just plain strawberry after finding the world of Rachel’s yogurts. They are on sale for 5 for $3!

Over in Specialty, check out the Rio Briati Fresh Mozzarella, on sale for 3 eight ounce tubs for $5!! This is an essential ingredient in the classic summer caprese salad. As the tomatoes are reaching their peak of flavor, cut into bite sized pieces, add sliced fresh mozzarella, some fresh basil, some minced fresh garlic if you like, and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Nothing tastes better on a hot summer day than this cool salad.

Need fresh basil? There are some beautiful basil plants out in front of the store right now for $4.99. Even if you can’t grow much in your garden, basil is an easy one to keep around. Just plant it in a sunny spot and remember to water it every so often. Harvest the basil with its stem as they grow tall and your basil plant will grow big and bushy and provide with that perfect peppery herb all summer long.

Pimiento Cheese

In case you missed some of the mad deals last week, you still have one more week to take advantage of them, which is great news! I’m sure there will be more steals and deals in the weeks and months ahead, but there really are some good ones in the store right now.

One that I missed last week and was able to take advantage of today is the New Zealand Cheddar Cheese that is on sale for $2.99 a pound! Yes, two dollars and ninety-nine cents a pound. That is a steal! Look for it over in Produce, set up on a cart, cut, wrapped, and ready to go. If you don’t see it, ask a Team Member for help. I got a huge chunk of it for $2.51 and made some delicious pimiento cheese spread from it.

To make my pimiento cheese, I grated the New Zealand cheddar and  some yellow 365 cheddar (you know, to make it fancy), added some jarred pimientos, mayo, garlic granules, and a pinch of black pepper. I picked up a loaf of pumpernickel bread from the Bakery (and had them slice it) and a luscious ripe red tomato from Produce. I toasted my bread, added some honey mustard to one side, slathered on some pimento cheese, and some thick slices of tomato. You just can’t beat that.
