Bulk Spices….a Hidden Treasure

by raleigh, August 2, 2009 | Permalink

How many times have you found a new recipe that made your mouth water by just reading it? Determined to create this culinary masterpiece, you head to our store, list in hand, ready to get everything that you need to embark on this tasty adventure.

You notice that there are some ingredients on your list that you don’t have in your pantry and that you have never used before. Turmeric? Dry mustard? Fenugreek??! In the spice aisle, you may start to have some doubts about whether you can afford to try this new dish!

This is where one of the true gems of the store come into play. Tucked up in Whole Body, facing the back of the store with the sports bars, stands the bulk herb shelf. Here you will find a plethora of spices, mixes, and herbs so that you can get just as much (or as little) as you want. Do you need a teaspoon of dill seed? A tablespoon of crushed red pepper? A sprinkling of taco seasoning? You can find it here, and pay for just that small amount. It also ensures that your spices will be at the height of their flavor when you throw it into your new dish.

And how often do we really use fenugreek?

I’ve always wondered why you don’t post something in the bottled spice section in the main store so people know you have bulk spices in the Whole Body area. I have purchased your bulk spices at various WF’s for over 15 years, so I knew to look for them. But I think most people won’t, and they are a really great value and best way to get what you need, and they’re always really fresh.

Shhh!!! Don’t let everyone else on to my little secret. I haven’t purchased pre-packaged spices and herbs in quite some time. I purchase what I need in bulk and put thim in little glass jars. Looks cute and fresher.

This feature is one of the reasons I’ve often driven more than an hour each way to shop at Whole Foods! I love the bulk offerings of herbs and spices, and have used them to build up my inventory of ingredients. I have even picked up small amounts of bulk spices and shipped them to friends in England, who don’t have access to Whole Foods Markets.

Thanks for providing this great service!
