Whole Planet Foundation Prosperity Campaign 2009

by southloop, April 3, 2009 | Permalink

A huge thank you and appreciation to all of our customers at WFM South Loop. The Whole Planet Foundation Prosperity Campaign just ended on Tuesday, and we are so moved by the generosity of our customers, especially given these difficult times. With your help we raised $15,825.77 for the Whole Planet Foundation. That was twice our original goal! So what does it mean?

The Whole Planet Foundation is our non-profit  organization whose mission is to create economic partnerships with the poor in developing countries where we source product. Last year, Whole Planet focused the Prosperity Campaign on expanding microcredit in Kenya and Ethiopia. This year, $ 1.8 million, the amount we raised company wide, will go directly into microcredit projects in South America. The average microloan is $205. Over 99% of our clients are women, who on average are responsible for an additional 4 family members. With South Loop’s donation that means  77 women will get a chance to start or grow a home based business that will help to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. That’s nearly 400 people!  All because of you. And because Whole Foods Market covers all operating expenses for Whole Planet Foundation, you can be confident that 100% of your dollars goes into loans and community development.

As a former Team Member Volunteer, I can assure you that this program works. I have met with women in Costa Rica and seen the businesses they have started with loans from Whole Planet Foundation. They truly feel empowered and in control of their future in ways they previously hadn’t thought possible.  To know that you are a part of that is truly magical.

If you missed the opportunity to give during the campaign, or if you’re like me, and just so moved by Whole Planet Foundation and its work, you can still contribute! When you are in our stores, look for products that carry the Whole Trade Guarantee. These products, in addition to maintaining fair trade standards and practicing good environmental stewardship, give 1% of profits to the Whole Planet Foundation. Also check out products that are members of our Supplier Alliance for Microcredit. These companies have pledged money directly to the Whole Planet Foundation. To identify these products or to give a donation at anytime, visit www.wholeplanet foundation.org.  And again we sincerely thank you for helping us to remember we are not just the South Loop Community, but a world community as well.
