OD on PB

I have felt great these past 8 days on my vegan diet. I have lots of energy and I am not craving anything. I have not been bringing on the veggies as much as I should but it is something to work up to. I am trying to limit my oils and processed foods as well but sometimes I have some olive oil on my salad or peanut butter on my apple. I think these options are fine in moderation because they more resemble what my diet will consist of after the 28 days. If I continue to eat this way I am going to have some of these options every now and then.
One thing I have been doing is reading books about plant based diets. I find it helps keep me on track and it gives me meaning behind what I am doing. My family friend Shaunna gave me some great suggestions. I am currently reading The Kind Diet by Alecia Silverstone, Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, and The Engine 2 Diet by Rip Esselstyn. I go back and forth between the three and so far I love them all. The Engine 2 Diet has some great recipes. I don’t love all the recipes in Alecia’s book because a lot of them are for a macrobiotic eater. (I am so not ready for that!) Eating Animals is really entertaining and reads more like a story than a fact/recipe book.
Thoughts about endless veganism have crossed my mind based on my reading and how I feel. There are always pros and cons to eating a certain way and I feel like I can easily see both sides. What really gets me worked up about eating animal protein is my lack of control. I have no control over the environment, medication/antibiotics and slaughtering practices that an animal goes through before it becomes my meal. (It seems like no one is monitoring these practices closely.) Because of this I can see myself eating primarily a plant based diet, and only eating meat/seafood occasionally if I can trace their origin. I know that sounds impossible so I will give you an example. My family spends most of the summer on Cape Cod. When my dad goes there he loves to fish. We also have a great relationship with a local lobster fisherman. This is a perfect example of when I might choose to eat seafood. I know that my dad when out in his boat, caught a few fresh fish and that is dinner. I don’t necessarily agree with some vegan ideologies that we are not made to eat meat. I think our bodies can tolerate it but it is what the meat goes through to get to us that concerns me. Something to think about.

I love Jonathan Safran Foer!!! You should read Everthing is Illuminated when you have a chance! It is a really great book that has nothing to do with veganism ahaha. I’m glad you’re happy with your vegan diet so far!!!
