The Blessing Basket Project
by winston-salem, November 19, 2009 | Permalink
The Blessing Basket Project has just arrived at Whole Foods Market in Winston-Salem.
What is the Blessing Basket Project? It is a non-profit organization which purchases beautiful, hand-made, woven baskets directly from artisans living in poverty in developing countries. The artisans are paid a “Prosperity Wage,” which is a financial model whose goals are to elevate artisans from poverty to middle class and to encourage sustainable entrepreneurship. The Prosperity Wage is significantly higher even than Fair Trade wages. Since it’s inception in 2003, the mission of the Blessing Basket Project is to pay artisans the highest market wage in the world for their wares. Today, over 3000 artisans in six countries across Africa and Asia are a part of the project. Entire villages have been lifted out of poverty, schools have been constructed and clean water has been accessed, all as a result of this project. Whole Foods Market has been instrumental in supporting the project by providing a venue for these beautiful baskets to be sold. Currently over 90 WFM stores nationwide carry the baskets, and they have just arrived in Winston-Salem. Stop in today to see the beautiful handiwork and to support this innovative non-profit. For more information, visit www.blessingbasket.org.

Pro Bar
by winston-salem, June 18, 2009 | Permalink
You must try the new Pro Bar in our Whole Body department. They are decadent like a dessert but actually meal replacement bars due to their caloric content. Pro Bar is made from whole, organic, raw foods and are 100 percent vegan. Unlike most rock-hard energy and meal replacement bars, this soft chewy bar doesn’t contain unrecognizable, hard-to-pronounce ingredients. The flavors, like Cherry Pretzel, Cocoa Pistachio, Koka Moka and Nutty Banana Boom, are most intriguing. So, if you have to skip a meal or need to refuel after a great work out, check out Pro Bar.
This Father’s Day
by winston-salem, June 5, 2009 | Permalink
Another holiday is fast approaching. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21st and, like many of us, you still need to find Dad a gift. So what do you get the man who means the world to you? Dress socks? A tie? Nose hair clippers…YUCK! Nothing says, “I love you” like a fresh pair of tighty whities! No, those just won’t do. For a change of pace try a delicious steak or filet of salmon instead. Another nice fit, pun intended, are the Okabashi sandals (only $12.99), which are endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association and made of 15% recyclable materials. Feeling lucky? Post a Father’s Day idea on the Whole Story blog for a chance to win a $100 Whole Foods Market Gift Card. Whatever you decide, get inspired and think outside the box.
TOMS shoes
by winston-salem, May 6, 2009 | Permalink
Have you heard about TOMS shoes (not to be confused with Tom’s of Maine – dental products). Maybe you’ve seen the AT&T commercial featuring TOM founder, Blake Mycoskie, who runs TOMS completely on his Blackberry PDA (Look mom no computer!). Perhaps you’re familiar with their promise: “For every pair you purchase TOM’s will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One.” Still not ringing a bell? Well, then it’s time for you to get over to our Whole Body department and try on a pair for yourself. The shoes come in a variety of colors and sizes and our store has the widest selection to choose from in Winston. They’re stylish, comfortable, and affordable… they’re TOMS.
Visit TOMS website and find out “WHY SHOES?”
Support Local. Reach Global.

These past couple of months has been very exciting here at our store. A very unique opportunity arose for us to form a partnership with a local volunteer organization called the Amani Children’s Foundation. This is a volunteer group birthed right here in Winston-Salem with the express purpose of serving infants, orphaned by AIDS, in Africa. Currently, Africa has the highest rate of orphans anywhere in the world, two million of which are in Kenya alone. By creating a partnership with Amani our customers and Team Members have had the opportunity to rescue these children from abandonment while providing a safe home and nourishment. Other than donations, Amani Beads are the main form of financial support for the foundation. Unique, handcrafted beads are created in Africa and shipped to Amani where local volunteers make them into necklaces. These necklaces are of very high quality and no two are alike. Exclusively at our store, you can purchase these necklaces and 100% of the proceeds from the sale go to Amani.
In addition to carrying these exclusive necklaces, on March 28 our store held a 5% day where 5% of our store sales were donated to Amani. Thanks to our customers and Team Members shopping that day, we raised a total amount of $2,700! It’s amazing to see how that supporting local we can reach global. A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone involved in making this partnership and the events surrounding it happen. To find out more about Amani Children’s Foundation, visit their website at amanichildren.org and be sure to check out the Amani Beads display in our Whole Body department the next time you visit.
