One Dime at a Time: A Simple Way To Make A Difference.

Reusing your own bags now helps more than ever with our One Dime at a Time program. At Whole Foods Market, customers who reuse their grocery shopping bags receive a ten cent refund per bag.  You may keep the refund or donate it to a specified One Dime at a Time nonprofit organization. Donate by telling your cashier to apply your ten cent bag refund to the One Dime program. Our One Dime recipient for January, February and March is the Whole Planet Foundation. Through March 31th your dimes will add up to benefit this important organization.

Learn How to Make Sushi with Jan Kemp

It’s time to take the mystery out of assembling sushi. This course is a hands-on class for anyone who wants to discover the FUNdamentals of making sushi at home.  You will learn the basic skills of cooking sushi rice, and the essentials of preparing, rolling and presenting sushi. Each person will get to create and roll their own sushi using an assortment of plant based fillings and garnishes. The best part is that you get to enjoy them at the end of class. All students are required to bring a sushi mat to class. You may bring your own from home or purchase one at time of registration. Swordfish Risotto with Francesca Giaraffa

Seafood is an important dietary staple to a country such as Italy that boasts 4,700 coastline bordering the sea. Combine seafood and rice and you have the classic Italian dish of Swordfish Risotto.  Calamari is then stuffed with breadcrumbs and olives simmered in a tomato based wine sauce. Noodles Chinese Style with Angela Yang

Although the Chinese, Arabs and Italians all claim to have created the noodle, the first written account is from the Chinese East Han Dynasty, between 25 and 220 AD. Noodles remain a staple in modern Chinese cuisine. Great variety exists depending on the ingredients used to make them, their size and shape, manner of preparation and the region in which they are produced. Using a traditional stir-fry technique, instructor Angela Yang will share a few of her favorites from Southeast China and Taiwan: pan-fried noodles, rice noodles and cold sesame flavored noodles. All of these dishes include a large variety of healthy vegetables, are prepared with lighter sauces to enhance the natural flavors and can be made with or without the addition of meat. Italian Summer Suppers 2 Rustic Italian Cooking: Vegetarian with Francesca Giarraffa

In this course a complete rustic Italian meal is prepared featuring a vegetarian entree, side dishes and dessert. The course is led by an instructor born into the Italian cooking tradition, who apprenticed at a specialty restaurant in Naples, Italy. Students will assist in preparing eggplant parmigiana (sliced and fried eggplant layered with mozzarella and parmigiano cheese and baked in a light tomato basil sauce), zucchini parmigiana (layers of fried zucchini slices baked with homemade bread crumbs, mozzarella and parmigiano cheese and fresh basil), frittata di cipolle (onion frittata made with caramelized onions, eggs and parmigiano cheese, then served on a bed of mixed greens) and a seasonal fruit dessert, followed by the entire meal enjoyed together family style.This class is held in the Cooking and Lifestyles Classroom at Whole Foods Market, 3135 Washtenaw Ave., in Ann Arbor. Saltimbocca is one of the most classic Roman dishes. The name literally translates as “hop in the mouth”. Sautéed veal slices are wrapped with prosciutto and fresh sage, then topped with a white wine sauce. Accompany this with fresh Artichoke Hearts sautéed with garlic, olives and capers. Rustic Italian Cooking: A Taste of Southern Italy Campania & Sicily with Francesca Giarraffa

Travelers to Italy may be surprised at the diversity of its regional cuisine. We invite you to spend two delicious culinary evenings with our native Italian cooking instructor exploring dishes from northern Italy. Each night a complete rustic Italian meal featuring an entree, side dish and dessert will be prepared and enjoyed together. Week one includes fresh cod fillets (topped with a fresh parsley and garlic sauce), grilled bell pepper and zucchini salad (tossed with a white wine vinaigrette including basil and oregano), cannellini bean salad (tossed with fresh fennel and herbs and a lemon garlic vinaigrette) and biancomangiare (cream pudding made with almonds and orange zest, served with poached fruit). Week two includes risotto con gamberi (shrimp risotto), swordfish (pan seared and topped with fresh olives and herbs), asparagus and carrot salad (dressed with a white wine vinaigrette) and espresso coffee granita (served with homemade whipped cream and cognac). Prepare and enjoy three traditional appetizers in this class taught by an instructor born into the Italian cooking tradition. Apprenticed in a specialty restaurant in Naples, Italy, she learned to create these Italian favorites using the freshest ingredients available.
The menu includes: two toppings for crostini (one spread made with fresh green olives, almonds, garlic and fresh herbs) and (the second, an artichoke pesto); two versions of bruschetta (one topped with radicchio sautéed in olive oil and garlic, then sprinkled with gorgonzola cheese) and (the second, a traditional Neapolitan style with fresh tomatoes and basil); zucchini fritters (dipped in yeast batter that includes pecorino cheese and chives, then fried until crisp).This class is held in the Cooking and Lifestyles Classroom at Whole Foods Market, 3135 Washtenaw Ave., in Ann Arbor. This class is designed to teach expecting parents and the public about an amazing, gentle birthing option.  Together, we will explore the history of the doula, her role, the numerous obstetrical and long-term benefits, the importance of emotional support and advocacy, and one law that every laboring woman must know. Also, I will demonstrate some physical comfort techniques, and lastly, we have a discussion about the true role of the father at birth, doulas and dad’s compatibility, and how doulas ENHANCE, not diminish dad’s support.  Dads are often very relieved when a doula is along for their labor journey.
