Celebrating Earth Day!

At Whole Foods Market, we like to think that every day is Earth Day! The movement to protect our environment grows larger every day and it seems that we are constantly reminded of the small ways in which we can collectively make a big difference. Just think of all the trees that have been and continue to be saved because of recycling paper, bringing your own bags when you shop, choosing sustainably harvested products, and even bringing your own mug when you get coffee. We can all make a difference!

Come join us on Earth Day where we will be hosting our best giveaway ever starting at 9am! Bring a bin, bucket, or other container and we will fill it up with compost that will bring a burst of life to your home garden. Composting is a great (and remarkably easy) way to divert waste from the landfill back to the earth, brimming with life and nutrients that will help your garden grow. Just bring your own container and it will make its way home with you.

Our Earth Day celebration will take place from 9am to 6pm (or until it’s gone) this Friday, April 22. Come join us for the celebration and bring home some free compost! Your mother (earth) will thank you.

If you’ve been in the store recently you have surely been asked to donate to the Whole Planet Foundation.

Whole Foods Market in Cary is proud to be an active member of our local community. This is our second year being involved with the Advocates for Health in Action Dig-In community gardens. Also, it will be the second year you can find us at the Western Wake Farmers’ Market gleaming inspiration from the just-picked items for sale, fresh from the farm and from the hand of the farmer who grew it. We bring that same passion for the locally grown items that we are proud to offer in our store, fresh from farmers that we work with to create a sustainable, connected, and accessible local food community.

We are also happy to be partners with the Interfaith Food Shuttle to help bring fresh and nutritious foods to those who may not have access to it. For the past two summers, we have been a drop-off site for the Plant a Row for the Hungry program. In the tradition of neighbors sharing their garden’s bumper crop, people can bring in their extra cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers (and more!) and this home grown goodness is shared with others.

We are proud to have our very own Community Garden at our store to contribute to the Interfaith Food Shuttle. We have carved a broad garden oasis among the urban setting in front of our store in which we have successfully grown our own bumper crop of tomatoes, chard, lettuce, corn, cooking herbs, and more. Our Community Garden also serves as a simple model and learning tool in sustainable gardening, complete with rain barrels and organic gardening methods. Frequently, there are visitors in our garden admiring the seasonal offerings and hopefully bringing a little inspiration home with their groceries for how they can Plant a Row for the Hungry, too.

Interested in learning more about community gardens? Join us on March 5th from 8:30am to 1:00pm at Dig-In at the Marbles Childrens Museum in Raleigh. Participation is free. http://www.advocatesforhealthinaction.org/news/dig-community-gardening

As we gather together at this time of year to give thanks, join us in supporting a program that is making a difference around the world. Throughout the month of November, we are partnering with a group that we love to support- Vitamin Angels. When you purchase certain supplements in Whole Body (look for the special tag on the shelf) this month, a portion will be given to Vitamin Angels. This group works to connect micronutrient resources, such as Vitamin A, to people in places where these specific nutrients will make a life-changing difference. By making this connection, the mortality rate for these groups is lowered, their immunity is higher, and they are given the opportunity to live healthy and vibrant lives. We are helping to connect an accessible resource to a group that sorely needs it.

Partnering with Vitamin Angels is another way that Whole Foods Market is giving thanks this year and sharing the bounty of good health. Through this partnership, there isn’t any extra cost or donation from anyone. By simply purchasing supplements that we already rely on to keep us feeling good, the donation is made. Many Whole Body Team Members have received extra training from this organization and we all share in the excitement that this partnership creates. Anytime we can make a difference in people’s lives, we are doing the right thing. As an added bonus, right now on the Whole Story Blog if you leave a comment we will donate $1 to Vitamin Angels! Be sure to leave your support!

Please come join us in our store, among our aisles and awesome Team Members, to be a part of this joyous (and delicious) holiday. As always, out store is already brimming over with the holiday spirit! Throughout the hustle and bustle of the days to come, be sure to take some time to enjoy the simple pleasures in every day, to bring spirited joy to those who need it, and give thanks for all that brings us closer to those we love. Happy Thanksgiving!

We’ve reached the dog days of summer for sure! These days when the thermometer reaches triple digits and the sun shines its strongest rays, we want our houses to be anything but hot. One of our favorite ways to take a cool shortcut to dinner is to pick up a cooked rotisserie chicken from our Prepared Foods Team. If you haven’t brought one of these tasty birds home yet, I don’t know how you’ve been able to resist their savory aroma near the registers. They are delicious year round and make a great foundation for quick summer meals that can be assembled without having to heat up the house.

To make a delicious Tortilla Soup, pull all the meat that you can off the chicken and shred with a fork. Heat one 28oz. can 365 Everyday Value organic diced tomatoes in a pot and crush with a potato masher or fork. Add ½ cup of your favorite salsa, 4 cups of vegetable or chicken stock, and a pinch of sea salt and pepper. Add your shredded chicken and a handful of chopped cilantro. Let simmer on medium low heat for 20 minutes. To serve, break a few tortilla chips into the bottom of a bowl and cover with soup. You can garnish with a great variety of toppings including cheddar cheese, diced avocado, sour cream or greek yogurt, more chopped cilantro, or a few chopped mixed olives from the olive bar.

To make a quick Mediterranean Chicken Salad, remove all the meat from the chicken and dice. Add a 5oz bag of chopped fresh spinach (our 365 Everyday Value spinach is only $1.99!), a 6oz tub of crumbled feta, some local cherry or grape tomatoes (cut in half), a few artichoke hearts and chopped mixed olives from the olive bar, a generous sprinkling of oregano, and a quick drizzle of olive oil. Serve on toasted ciabatta bread.

To make a quick Barbeque Chicken Pizza, start by pulling off one side of the breast meat and dicing into small chunks. Pick up one of our premade crusts (near the frozen pizzas) and top with barbeque sauce, the diced chicken, sliced red onions (make it even quicker by picking these up off the salad bar), mozzarella cheese, and a sprinkling of smoked gouda cheese. If you feel like cooking up a couple slices of bacon, it is fantastic crumbled up on top of this pizza. My favorite addition to the BBB Chicken Pizza is pineapple- fresh or canned is delicious! If you’re really serious about not heating up the house, try a grilled pizza outside instead of turning on the oven.

When you are done with your delicious chicken, you can always store what is left in a plastic bag in the freezer. As soon as the autumn arrives (in just a few short months) and we feel that tinge of cooler weather, we’ll put it in a pot of water to simmer with garlic and a few carrots. Let it cook for hours until all the flavor and remaining meat comes right off and creates a delicious broth that is a perfect base for a fall soup. Until then, keep it cool!

If you’ve ever grown a summer garden, you know that sometimes you can end up with more than you need! How much yellow squash or zucchini can one family eat? In the tradition of sharing a bumper crop with your neighbors, we have partnered up with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle again this year to be a collection spot for the Plant A Row for the Hungry (PAR) program. This national program works to connect urban gardeners with those who are hungry in their communities. PAR has partners all across our area who have planted extra in their gardens to ensure a bumper crop, but someone with just a few extra tomatoes could just as easily become a part of this great program. Just bring your home grown extras in on Thursday or Friday and leave it in the designated bin in the Produce Department (near the front doors). Whether you bring vegetables, fruit, herbs, or flowers, take pride in the fact that you are personally working to reduce hunger in our area.

In case you haven’t noticed our Community Garden in the back of our parking lot, you need to check it out! Busile’s corn is tall, our sunflowers bright, and the whole garden is a frequent stopping point for enchanting (and pollinating) butterflies and dragonflies, too. Our swiss chard is growing vibrantly, despite the heat, and our tomato plants are bursting with big green tomatoes that are soaking up this hot July sun. We currently have 4 families involved in our garden and their plots are looking great. What could make this garden even more beautiful? How about the fact that everything we grow is a contribution to the PAR program? Everything that we grow (and our member families are encouraged to share their harvest) in our Community Garden is sent along with the other donations to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to help nourish someone who needs it. We have also partnered with Cary’s Pocket Community Garden and Penny Road Elementary PTA Community Garden to support their gardening efforts, and also to serve as a Plant A Row drop off for their extra produce.

A couple of weeks ago we started our Artisanal Cheese Tasting Series to highlight some cheese vendors that we think are really special. The first tasting highlighted selections from London cheese retailer Neal’s Yard Dairy. Our focus for the series will be on vendors who promote and preserve artisanal and small cheesemakers. On Friday, May 21st from 4 – 7 p.m. we will be tasting selections from cheese rock star, Herve Mons.

Admittedly, I am borrowing our cheese buyer, Cole’s reference to cheese-rock-stardom, `to describe Herve Mons, but only because she is correct. Plus, she said she would ask him for an autograph given the chance. Having groupies is what elevates regular cheesemaker to rock star cheesemaker, in case you were wondering. So who is this Herve Mons and why should you join his fan club?

Mons is a family business created 30 years ago by Rolande and Hubert Mons. Today Hubert’s two sons, Herve and Laurent, run the business. The Mons family relocated from Auvergne to Roanne to sell their cheese to local markets. Soon they were buying cheese from producers all over France. It became apparent that these cheeses needed to be properly cared for so Herve set out to learn the art of aging cheeses or affinage. To support his education the Mons family built caves in the hillside of the small village where they lived, St Haon le Chatel, for Herve to practice and perfect affinage. The caves in St. Haon le Chatel are still being used by the Mons family and that is how one becomes a cheese rock star.

Today Herve Mons is an acclaimed affineur in France who has been awarded with the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France. The Meilleir Ouvrier is a craftsmen competition held every four years with awards given to the best craftsmen competing in each field. It covers everything from chocolate making, pâtisserie, and in Mons’ case affinage, to specific building trades, including window making and cabinetry.

Mons focuses on sustaining the art and history of France’s most famous cheeses that, with the changing times, have come close to extinction. Because of their passion, excellence and commitment to artisanal cheesemaking, Mons is responsible for helping sustain hundreds of dairy farmers and small artisanal cheese makers throughout France. If you’d like to hear what Herve has to say in his own words (and see his righteous cowboy hat) check out our producer profile. We feel lucky to be a part of this and we hope you stop by on Friday to share in all the Herve Mons’ awesome-ness that we call cheese!

The time has come for a very special day
Reserved for the second Sunday during each and every May
It is a day that is sacredly reserved
To shower Mom with all the love she deserves

She is the one that always knows
The one who has seen us through all our highs and lows
Providing inspiration, and guidance from far and from near
And all the comforting words we could ever need to hear

She selflessly gives and gives from the heart
So on this day it is important to do our part
To show how much we care
Just think of your Mom and your heart will lead you there

Come see us at your Whole Foods Market in Cary
Where you will find everything you need to make her day extraordinary
Chocolate, tulips, and grass fed beef steaks
Seafood, locally made cheese, and maybe a card would be great

Gourmet crackers, handmade pasta, and bath salts galore
A dazzling array of plants for her garden are waiting at our door
Fair trade soaps, cookbooks and candles await
And virtually everything you could dream of to make her day great

You could even pick up a gourmet meal that is ready to go
(you can try to pass it off as homemade, but she’ll probably know)
Be sure to be thoughtful no matter what you do
And remember, nothing could be more important to Mom than saying, ” I love you.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

Social responsibility is at the heart of everything we do at Whole Foods Market. From community spotlights to working with local farmers’ markets; we find great ways to support our world one community at a time. The Whole Planet Foundation is a result of our commitment to making the world a better place and an extension of being committed to the communities in which we work.

Another way in which Whole Foods Market supports our global community is in our Whole Trade program. Building upon the framework of Fair Trade, which ensures a fair wage for a product, the Whole Trade program is Whole Foods Market’s own system for supporting producers with a fair wage, protecting the environment, and creating better working conditions overall. The very first product that met all criteria to be certified Whole Trade was EARTH bananas. Sourced from EARTH University in Costa Rica, these bananas are grown in an environmentally responsible and innovative manner, with respect for the fields, fruit, and worker. Not only is a quality product offered and fair wage paid, but through Whole Foods Market’s commitment to purchasing these bananas, the entire University benefits and is able to empower and educate students from all over the world about sustainable agricultural business practices. Recently we added our Whole Trade Organic Pineapple to our produce offerings. Whole Trade flowers, available in our floral department, are also a sustainable alternative when you are shopping for a bouquet.

There are now a number of products that we offer that meet all the criteria of the Whole Trade program. Companies that share the same vision as Whole Foods Market are joining this effort and paying a fair wage for a product while protecting the environment and making global communities stronger and more self-sufficient. The list of products that bear this label is continually growing and include several varieties of Allegro and 365 Everyday Value coffee, vegan cane sugar, orange juice, Divine chocolate, Allafia body care, Fairhills wine, Larabars, honest Tea, Kopali Organics, Steaz Energy drinks, Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, and kettle popcorn from Popcorn, Indiana (look for this tasty snack in the big red bags!).

In a connection that is merely a natural extension of goodness and empowerment, another great feature of the Whole Trade program is that 1% of all purchases goes to the Whole Planet Foundation. So go ahead! Indulge in all the Whole Trade coffee, chocolate, and wine you like…you are helping to change the world and make it a better place.
