Greenlife Grocery Sponsors East Side 5th Graders Field Trip to Crabtree Farms
Farm-To-School Field Trip for East Side Students Sponsored by Greenlife
Kids learning about cooking with farm fresh food!
Greenlife Grocery was proud to sponsor over 80 fifith graders from East Side Elementary for a field trip on Sept. 24 from 10:30-12:00 to Crabtree Farms, Chattanooga’s urban teaching farm. The field trip offers a valuable opportunity for these inner city youth to learn about farming and cooking with fresh vegetables first hand.”Many children in our community do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. This Greenlife sponsored field trip will give these kids a chance to connect with tasty, fresh food in a very real way,” says Melanie Mayo, Director of Education & Outreach at Crabtree Farms. “It’s a fact that exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables is key to getting kids to become comfortable eating them, so this is a step in the right direction!”On this food-filled field trip, the East Side Elementary 5th grade students harvested fresh lettuce from the fields of Crabtree Farms. They also learned to use kitchen utensils to prepare a fresh lettuce salad and dressing with help from the Crabtree Farms staff and volunteers. The cost for the field trip and the bus transportation was paid through a Greenlife Grocery sponsorship.
