Color Your Palate with Flavor

Recently, I have been admiring the beautiful weather outside and remembering how I escaped a past February to California to grab a bit of sunshine in the middle of the coldest winter on record. As I walked through the doors of Whole Foods Market Dublin this morning, I was transported back to the feeling I had when when I stepped off the plane in California and, Wow! The scents of oranges greeting me at the door transported me to the warm and pleasant memories of my vacation. What a great way to start a work day!

I invite you to stop by today  to grab a bit of nature’s sunshine fruit. Today’s One Day Deal is Organic Navel Oranges at 79 cents per pound.  The bag I filled with Oranges, weighed 6 pounds at a cost of $4.75, a great value for the cook on the go. Each orange is plump, juicy and approximately ½ pound in weight

  • Oranges are a great pocket fruit to eat on the run or in a packed lunch for kids. The peel is luscious, begging to be zested before eating the fruit.  Why not harvest the zest of a few, for your evening meal? The zest is the orange part of the peel on the top layer of the rind.  It is the fragrant thin layer that sits on top of the bitter thick white pith. To harvest, use a shape paring knife to cut through the thin layer or stoke it with a fine grater or rasp style zester. The essential oil in the zest pairs well with the juice to flavor the sauce in our braised dish of the week, Chicken Thighs Braised in Shallots and Orange Zest.
  • This flavorful dish is budget friendly, moist and juicy as a result of the braising process we talked about in my previous post. Our Meat department has printed copies of a booklet on braising with the complete directions, but it is also available online.  I recommend you serve your delicious chicken dish on a bed of whole wheat pasta, alongside a colorful salad from our fine assortment of greens to fill out your plate. I promise you dinner will be ready to serve quickly and you’ll have the great satisfaction of feeding your family a healthy meal.
