Rouken Glen Orchard
Rouken Glen Park could be raining apples within four years after work began on a new community orchard at the popular visitor destination. Over 100 apple trees are to be planted next to the park’s Walled Garden as a way of reminding young people of the wonders of nature. Three benches will also be installed so that visitors can marvel at the orchard, set out in a fan shape to resemble a giant tree from above.
Hugh Moore, chair of Giffnock Community Council, will manage the project on behalf of Go Greener, East Renfrewshire’s environmental champions. Hugh praised the vital financial involvement of Whole Foods Market, who will open a new store in Fenwick Road on November 16.
The world’s biggest natural and organic food retailer provided the final funding which will allow the orchard to become reality.
He said:”There was money from a community grant and a contribution from East Renfrewshire’s community environmental group, Go Greener.
“But the support from Whole Foods Market was key to the thing going ahead. Their approach to community relations has been like a breath of fresh air.”
Apple varieties which are native to Scotland, particularly Ayrshire, will be given a chance to thrive in what will be called “The Go Greener Community Orchard, Supported by Whole Foods Market.”
John Hancox, director of the fruit-promoting organisation The Commonwealth Orchard, added:”I would expect these trees to be bearing fruit within four years. “It is nice to be able to secure a small part of this park for posterity. These trees will carry on growing for the next 40 years.”
The ground was broken by Councillor Mary Montague of East Renfrewshire Council, who hailed the “brilliant” fruit-bearing project.
