Summer has arrived, and so has the amazing variety of salmon options in our Seafood Department! Our Seafood Case features plenty of salmon that are ready for your grill or oven, but none have quite the story that our Copper River Salmon does.

Hailing from the Copper River in Alaska, these determined salmon travel over 300 miles to spawn over more than a thousand foot ascent. Salmon that travel up this river are challenged by both its length and its low temperature, and the journey upstream results in a strong fish with high natural oils and a strong reserve of body fat. Copper River Salmon are known for being especially rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to support healthy cardiac function. These oils and fats result in it being one of the tastiest fish you can find!

Copper River Salmon are harvested using the Gilnetting technique, which involves laying a net wall in the water in the fishes’ path. The fish swim into the mesh and are prevented from escaping. The salmon is iced at the point of harvest, which is the best way to ensure the receiving the highest quality salmon once it arrives in the store.

Copper River Salmon meets the highest standards for seafood sustainability, being named a Certified Sustainable Seafood by the Marine Stewardship Council.

While the salmon’s journey and the fisherman’s methods are intriguing, nothing is better than the taste!

switch to organics. Organic agriculture limits input of toxic and persistent chemicals in the air, soil and water

shop thougthfully. Choose products from companies and businesses that do things to support the health of the planet

“green” your cleaning. Read the labels to see what the products we carry don’t contain and use Eco-Scale ratings to make the best choice for you

cold washing. Reduce energy usage by roughly 80% using cold water when you wash your clothes

bright idea. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) last longer than standard bulbs and save energy too

shop bulk. Save packaging on groceries like grains, beans, cereals, pasta and snacks by bying them from bulk bins

bring a bag. Remember your reusable bags to save from using paper bags and get a little discount at the checkout!

clean face, clean body, clean hands. Our Premium Body Care seal is on products that meet strict standards for quality sourcing, environmental impact, results and safety

recycle and buy recycled. Keep a recycling bin in your home as a reminder to recycle. Close the loop by buying products made from or packaged in recycled material

bring it. Your lunch and your water bottle that is. Reduce sing-use packaging waste by toting reusable containers.

Hail to the cheese! With a documented reign dating back almost 1,000 years, only Parmigiano Reggiano made in one area of Northern Italy, the rolling hills and green pastures comprising Reggio Emilia, Parma, Modena and portions of Bologna and Mantua can bear the royal name of Parmigiano Reggiano. There the cheese is made in small batches using artisanal methods in accordance with the stringent quality standards of the Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano. Join the conversation this week as we explore all delicious aspects of the King of Cheese. We celebrate on Saturday, March 10th at 3pm the simultaneous cracking of a 85lbs wheel using traditional knives.
