Whole Foods Market Plantation is proud to introduce Dana Carlantone, our new Store Team Leader. Dana joined our family in 2001 as a cashier and since then has held the positions of Customer Service Lead, Associate Team Leader, Team Leader and in 2007 she became an Associate Store Team Leader. In 2011 Dana had the exciting opportunity to assist in the opening of the first Whole Foods Market in Scotland! Having grown up in Hollywood, Dana is a local girl-a rarity in the South Florida community where many of our residents are transplanted from someplace else. She has two beautiful children, a four year old daughter and a two year old son who look just like her. Some of her favorite activities are dancing with her kids and family trips to Disney World. Dana is thrilled to join the Plantation team (We are glad to have her, too!) and looks forward to a great relationship with our community. Next time you see Dana, say hello!

Food Day Film Screening: Forks Over Knives

Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. In honor of Food Day 2011 we screened the feature film Forks Over Knives in our café. The film examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

Holiday Happy Hour

This past Friday our store held an event to kick off the season, a Holiday Happy Hour. For a donation to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, customers sampled wine, seasonal beer and hors d’oeuvres in every department and enjoyed a live harp performance by a local musician. Six wine vendors were represented at the event and set up tables throughout the store to allow patrons to try some of their favorite picks for the holidays. The event was a great success, raising $880 for our nonprofit partner.

Bakery sampled out mini tartlettes , Seafood sampled smoked salmon with horseradish sauce on a baguette, Grocery served up a savory pesto dish, Whole Body participated with a sparkling POM drink, Prepared Foods handed out Lebanese Sumac Shrimp, Meat sampled parmesan crusted meatballs and our Health Starts Here Specialist provided a healthy hors d’oeuvre option of roasted red pepper cream and an olive artichoke tapenade on HSH sprouted breads. Specialty sampled an array of holiday items including truffles, Kerrygold buttered baguette, stuffed brie and other cheeses.

Back to School Bash

This Saturday our store held a big Back to School Bash featuring a DJ and a store-wide vendor fair of family friendly products. Our Bakery jumped in with a demo of their own and I have to say, the Peanut Butter & Jelly Smoothie was definitely a crowd favorite. Activities kicked off with a Kids Club event packing a healthy school lunch. Amanda lead the class in making double butter sandwiches on sprouted grain bread. Billy the Clown made balloon animals and did face painting for the kids. The Plantation Fire Department came out with one of their engines for kids to explore and hang out with the firefighters. Our Donate Your Dime partner, the Broward Education Foundation, also joined us and collected several bags of school supplies for the Kids in Need Resource Center. Cupping with Coffee Roasters’ Alliance

On Saturday we held our first Cupping with Joey Chase from Coffee Roasters’ Alliance. He spoke with customers about the origins of different coffees and the field to market practices of the family owned farms supplying CRA. Joey talked about the qualities looked for in sourcing the beans and the standards in place to ensure farmers are getting a fair price for their harvest. We learned the proper way to smell the aromas of different coffees through sniffing the beans and “cutting the crust” of a brewed cup and then had an opportunity to taste each of the different Guy Harvey blends. As an added incentive Joey offered the coffee at Buy 1, Get 1 Free to all attendees. It was an extremely educational morning and fun to boot. Everyone had a great time and we will definitely be doing it again in the fall!

Healthy Eating at Indian Trace Elementary

Our store has a great partnership with one of our local schools, Indian Trace Elementary. This year the school placed a particular focus student health through a fitness initiative. We have provided the students with healthy snacks throughout the school year and we have been a major supporter of their walk-a-thon and other outdoor activities.

Just last week we met with the entire school to talk about healthy eating and nutrition. By the end of the presentations all of the students were able to name the four pillars of Health Starts Here, whole foods, plant-strong, healthy fats and nutrient-dense.

Healthy Starts Here Block Party

Winter Block Party

We had so much fun at our Winter Block Party on Saturday. Live holiday music by a talented saxophonist added to the festivities. Samples of coffee, cake, breakfast sausage and wine were just what we needed to make our spirits bright. Specialty and Prepared Foods tied for customer favorite. Thanks to everyone who came out for another great block party!

5% Day for Police Honor Guard

On Tuesday, December 7, the Plantation store hosted a 5% Day for the Police Honor Guard of Broward County. As a result, $3,901.10 will be donated to the organization to build a memorial for fallen police officers and K-9s at Markham Park. Mobile Mike from 105.9 was on-site to liven up the day with music and promoted the event on air. Officers came out to support the event bagging groceries for customers. Even the Plantation Police Explorers put in some volunteer hours at the information table and assisted customers. Some of the officers brought their K-9s, which the customers enjoyed petting and watching in a small demonstration. 30th Birthday Bash

We had such a FANTASTIC time celebrating our 30th birthday! We started off the celebration with a Wild West Food Showdown. Guitarist John D’Angelo created just the right atmosphere for sampling all of the delicious dishes. Texas chili and jalapeno cheddar cornbread cooked up by our Bakery and Prepared Foods departments won the competition. Day 2 of the party included a Kids Club event where everyone decorated cowboy hats. At noon, vendors around the store gave out free samples and talked to customers about their all natural products. After singing Happy Birthday to Whole Foods Market we passed out cake and coffee for everyone to enjoy. Live music by the 18 Wheelers added just the right touch to our party. Who knew turning the big 3-0 could be so much fun?!
