Community Giving
Community Giving
At Whole Foods Market Tenleytown, we are active participants in our community. We are proud of our community involvement and the relationships that we continue to make each month!
Due to the large number of donation requests we receive, we cannot respond to the status of your donation until the month before your event, and can only respond to those groups we are able to support. Phone calls in reference to donations under review cannot be returned.
Special Event Donations
We support local organizations which focus on health and human services, education, environmental preservation, hunger relief, the arts and animal compassion. However, each Whole Foods Market location has budgetary constraints and can only approve a limited number of the many donation request applications received. To be eligible to receive a donation from our store, you must be a local nonprofit, and a donation request form must be completed in its entirety with the required documentation at least 8 weeks in advance of the event date. No exceptions. To apply for a Special Event Donation Please fill out the online application here.
Store Tours
Please consider giving us at least 2- 4 weeks to schedule a tour.
School groups cannot be larger than 20 children or students. Early morning hours are preferable and any tour normally could take 30 to 45 minutes in total.
Good Stuff From Around Here
We have supported local growers and producers since 1980. Buying local means supporting local communities, jobs, independent farmers and producers, it also reduces the distance from farm to plate, and lets you stay connected to the seasons.
Community 5% Days
Our Community 5% Days are a meaningful way to give back to our community. Four times a year on a designated day, a total of 5% of the day’s sales are donated to local non-profit organizations. Customers help support our selected organizations just by shopping on these 5% Days.
We regularly review all incoming 5% Day applications to determine the next non-profit recipient. Selected organizations spread the good news by inviting friends, supporters and other members of the community to shop at the supporting Whole Foods Market on their 5% Day. During the 5% Day representatives from the chosen non-profit spend the day at the store sharing information about their organization and getting the word out about the 5% Day.
If you are interested in applying to become a 5% Day recipient, please Download 5% Day Application (pdf) and submit to the store’s customer service desk or by email to Melanie.Moore@wholefoods.com
To be considered for a 5% day, your organization must:
- Be a registered non-profit with a valid Certificate of Exemption.
- Complete a 5% Day Application and provide a copy of your tax identification letter, annual report and a list of your Board of Directors (applications are not considered complete without these materials!)
- Be able to provide a consistent in-store presence on the 5% Day.
- Work with Whole Foods Market to develop marketing strategies and in-store events to promote the 5% Day.

Community Gardens
Whole Foods Market is proud to partner with the DC Parks and Recreation by sponsoring the installation of one community garden at every recreation center in the 8 wards of the District of Columbia. The purpose of these 60 gardens is to promote community involvement, health, nutrition, environmental stewardship and community beautification. The Gardens are open to all community members with a focus on youth participation. It will provide the community with year round environmental education and the opportunity to discover the wonders of gardening. We will keep you posted as the construction of these gardens begins.
