Community Giving

Whole Foods Market believes in playing an active role in our communities. Since we opened in the Portland area in 2002, we have donated over $741,000 to our local communities. We do this in a number of ways each and every day through fundraisers and giving programs.

Whole Foods Market is Now Participating in Scrip!

In response to the incredible interest we’ve had from our communities for a gift card fundraising program, our non-profit and school customers can now purchase WFM gift cards from Great Lakes.  Here are the details:

  • Qualifying schools and non-profits can purchase WFM cards at a 3% discount
  • There is no cap, so organizations will not visit the site and find “sold-out” messaging
  • To set up a program or purchase cards, simply fill out an enrollment form on Great Lakes website.

HUNGER RELIEF AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET BRIDGEPORT

Seven days/week, area food banks come by to collect our perishable goods, feeding people in need.  This holiday season, we went beyond our on-going efforts to combat hunger with additional programs.

A big heartfelt thank you to everyone who partipated in our giving campaigns. With your support, the Portland area stores were able to donate close to $40,000 for Loaves and Fishes and $43,ooo for the Oregon Food Bank; over $19,000 of that came from the Bridgeport store alone!

Additionally, our Taste of Thanksgiving passport event on Nov 10th raised $1179 for the Juanita Pohl Center and gave guests a chance to enjoy the best of the season for only $10! We supply a delicious meal and donate all the proceeds. What a win-win! We thank you for your support of this very special organization.

BENEFIT BBQ’S

Benefit BBQ’s every Thursday this summer were so much fun! We got to work with so many incredible non-profits from around here (17 to be exact) and were able to donate nearly $6500 to some great community partners! It was such a hit, we’ll certainly be doing it again next year! Sign-ups will happen in mid-May. Check back here or on our facebook page for more info next Spring!

This year’s recipients were Neighborhood House; Meridian Park; White Oak Savanna; Friends of Tualatin River; Project Pooch; Willamette Writers; Raindrops to Refuge; Sherwood YMCA: Youth, Rights and Justice; Juanita Pohl Center, Loaves and Fishes; The Freshwater Trust;  Tualatin Riverkeepers; The Foundation for Tigard-Tualatin Schools; MITCH Charter School; and Templeton Elementary.

5% DAYS

Our Community 5% Days are another meaningful way we give back to our community. On designated days throughout the year a total of 5% of the day’s net sales are donated to local non-profit organizations. To enhance your involvement, simply watch for signs alerting you to upcoming 5% days at your local Whole Foods Market and then do your normal shopping on that day. Five percent of net proceeds from your purchases will automatically be donated to the particular cause your store is sponsoring on that day.

Our last our community support day, January 10th for Tualatin Farmers Market raised $3800! The one prior was September 21st, held at all Oregon Metro stores and generated nearly $14,000 for Ecotrust’s FoodHub!

BAG DONATION PROGRAM

Thank you for choosing reusable bags! Every time you bring in your own shopping bag, you have the option to donate 10 cents to an area non-profit! In 2011, you saved 90,351 bags and because of that, we were able to donate $9035.1 to recipients Children’s Book Bank, NW Earth Institute, Dove Lewis, Meridian Park, Project POOCH, Raindrops to Refuge, Neighborhood House, Helping Hands Hearts of Gold, and Friends of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge.

WHOLE KIDS FOUNDATION

Whole Kids Foundation is a 501c3 started by Whole Foods Market. The Whole Kids Foundation’s mission is to improve children’s nutrition and wellness with the goal of ending the childhood obesity epidemic. Through partnerships with innovative organizations, schools and educators we work to provide children access to healthier choices. We aim to help children reach their full potential through the strength of a healthy body.

Whole Kids Foundation is focusing its efforts in three areas:

In Fall 2010, we raised funds in our stores through events, raffles and generous donations from shoppers to put salad bars in schools. Local recipients were Sherwood Middle School, Tigard High School, Tualatin High School and Siletz Valley School.

In Fall 2011, we partnered with the WKF again to raise funds for Garden Grants. Recipients will be announced in early March 2012!

In 2010, we made donations to support fundraising efforts of the following organizations:
